Onkyo HT-S990THX 7.1 THX Home Theater Entertainment System Review

Onkyo HT-S990THX 7.1 THX Home Theater Entertainment System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this product about 3 weeks ago, and have now come to fully experience what it can do. It is a wonderful piece of equipment that is worth the money.
Pros:
The system is cost effective. For the money, you get a very good system. Sure, it's not as good as one that costs several thousand dollars, but it's much better than the standard HTIB you can find at a retail store. Remember, you always get what you pay for. If you want a cheap system that will need to be replaced often, this system is not for you. However, if you are like me and are just looking for a good system that's not going to break the bank, consider this as one of your options.
The system is also easy to set up. It comes with color coded wires and connections. The back of the receiver has all speaker connections color coded, and the colors match the wires and speaker terminals. Also, unlike most HTIB systems, the surround wires are long enough to support the room size this system was designed for. Remember, this is not a THX Select or Ultra system. It's not designed to play in large spaces (Select is for 2000 cubic feet, a 250 square foot room with an 8 foot ceiling; Ultra is for 3000+ cubic feet, about a 375 square foot room with an 8 foot ceiling). This system is designed for a smaller room (such as an apartment or small home). My living room is about 170 square feet (I live in an apartment).
The system is also easy to use. Just a glance at the user's manual will let you navigate through the configuration menu with no problems. Unlike other HTIB systems I have seen, the speaker distance is fully configurable, in standard or metric units. Other systems I have seen do not understand that your front speakers might be closer than your rear speakers. Instead, they would assume that this could not be possible, so if your application called for a front speaker distance of 7 feet, and a rear speaker distance of 10 feet, the receiver could not configure it. Therefore, the system did not sound correct unless you rearranged the room, or knock down walls. This system allows you to input any variation of measurements, but it's always in feet or meters. For once, I would like to see a system that had precise control of the delay, to the inch. 6 inches difference is about 0.5 milliseconds. Even though it's a small number, it seems as if the front soundstage is drastically different with differences as small as an inch between the FL/FR and center channels.
Cons:
Receiver does not support HDMI. This is both a pro and a con. First, I priced a Monster HDMI cable. There was one cable at Best Buy for $80. The good stuff started at $120. I didn't even look for anything THX certified. On the other hand, you can get a THX certified Component Video set for about $40, and a THX certified optical audio cable for about $38. From other reviews I have read, there is no noticeable difference between using HDMI and component connections.
Another con is that THX specifications call for a dipole side surround speaker, where as this system comes with a monopole side surround speaker. The side surrounds appear to be the exact same as the back surrounds. THX calls for monopole back surrounds and dipole side surrounds. This can make a difference in how enveloping the surround information is. Even though this system has monopole side surrounds, the surround effect is enveloping, but I've seen $10,000 setups that sounded much better. And this system doesn't cost $10,000 does it?
Yet another con has to do with the crossover point of the system. Ideally, you want all frequencies to blend together properly. In my setup, when using the THX demo disk, I notice a slight dip in bass output when transitioning from the main speakers to the subwoofer, then the subwoofer picks up the volume to normal as the frequency decreases. Now I'm sure I could compensate for this by spending thousands of dollars treating my room structures, purchasing equalizers, and moving the subwoofer around...but I don't want to do that...and probably neither do you. The system does not give perfectly flat response, but is withing 6 dB all the way through the transition. Also, the subwoofer is not the best suited for music. I cannot tell what class box is used (I don't want to take it apart), but it lacks the impact of a sealed box, and acts more like a vented or bandpass box. It delivers a rumbling impact when watching movies, but lacks accuracy for music reproduction. It seems as if there is a very sharp curve as the frequency gets lower, similar to a bandpass box. Listen for yourself and see what you think. Be sure to use music that has various bass frequencies.
Overall, I say this is a 4 out of 5. For those of you that want a dedicated movie theater in your house, this system is probably too small for you. For the rest of us, this is a great solution. It's an entry level high end home theater system, and the best HTIB on the market today. If you are considering going with something cheaper, consider this: This system comes with everything you need to play every audio format widely used today. It does both Dolby Digital and DTS, and adds THX to both standards (you can also listen in the native format being broadcast, with no THX). You can play this system in 2.1, 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 configurations, and comes with everything necessary to matrix stereo signals into all configurations, as well as matrix 5.1 signals into 6.1 or 7.1. Basically, it's a one-stop-shop. It's one system, in one box, that plays everything. I think that's why it was designed. Maybe more consumers buy HTIB systems rather than seperate components. As far as value, I'm sure if you shop around, you might find a better seperate component system for the same money, or close to it. But what does the average consumer want? Simplicity. This one word best describes this system. Given proper speaker and seating arangements, the system does exactly what it was designed to do, yet it's simple. And what was it designed to do? Bring the movie theater experience to your living room. It does that, without any problems.

The HT-S990THX is the first system to meet the parameters set by THX for overall system performance as opposed to separate loudspeaker and amplifier performance. In effect, the HT-S990THX represents a high-performance, powerful multichannel solution that combines the convenience of all-in-one systems with the performance of much higher priced separate components. With full THX processing capabilities-- THX ASA-derived playback modes (THX Cinema2, THX Music Mode, THX Games Mode)--you can be assured that this system brings out the full potential of surround sound for all entertainment options. Equally as important, Onkyo's Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT) gives the system a perfect base for stellar amplifier performance. Also, the HT-S990THX's compatibility with XM Satellite Radio and the iPod offers a completeness to this home entertainment system that has rarely been seen before.

Alpine Type-R SWR-1222D - Car subwoofer driver - 500 Watt - 12" Review

Alpine Type-R SWR-1222D - Car subwoofer driver - 500 Watt - 12
Average Reviews:

Wow, I was a bit skeptical that this sub could be as good as everyone says. I personally love most of Alpine's products so I decided I had to get one of these. I am amazed! This is the best sub I have ever heard. I have it paired with a Kenwood KAC-7205 that pumps out 1000W max (500W RMS) and it's in a 1 Cu.Ft. sealed enclosure. This I only have the bass level turned up to +3 and this subs hits louder, harder, and cleaner than my buddy who has two 12" Kicker CompVX subs with a 1500W amp. If you are looking for a great sub, this is it! You will not be disappointed! I can't even imagine how much harder this would hit with a ported box!

Velodyne SC8 8-inch Passive Subwoofer - SubContractor Series Review

Velodyne SC8 8-inch Passive Subwoofer - SubContractor Series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're thinking of getting just the sub ... think again. The laws of physics haven't been repealed; the way they get bass out of this small sub is to use equalization in the powerful companion SC-1250 amplifier. That is, you tell the amp you've hooked up this sub, and it boosts the low bass appropriately to get the right output. So as they say, you need the Velodyne amp to use this sub, unless you plan to create and test your own equalization, and use a massively powerful amp to drive it.
For what it is, though, it's a good product, though pricey when you include all the components. It's a very compact sub for custom or high end installs. You would probably want at least two of these for all but a small room. So you end up paying a big premium when it's all added up.

i dont own this sub, probably never will. i'm sure it sounds great and i'm also sure it hits deep. like the poster above me said (pimp van) is correct you probably need a van for any more than one of these. if you have your own shop, or your a special person with MTX and they give you one of these, or you just have money to blow than go for it. by as many as you want and blow your brains out with bass. but i promise that, for the cost of one of these subs you can have two very good subs installed with an amp that will out beet one of these every day of the week. i gave it 5 stars because i'm sure it's an awesome sub-woofer, MTX is a great company and has been a great company for a long time. this is just one of those (look what we have) products.

Rockford Fosgate Punch P3 P3D212 12-Inch 500-Watt Subwoofer - 2 Ohm Review

Rockford Fosgate Punch P3 P3D212 12-Inch 500-Watt Subwoofer - 2 Ohm
Average Reviews:

I have owned 2 P3d412 subwoofers for a year now and they are great! This system is really loud! with the volume turned all the way up, its almost difficult to breathe in the car. I have a rockford punch p1000-1bd amplifier powering the two(1259 watt). they are in a dual-ported enclosure. not only do they rattle your car apart, but the sound quality is great! hits the highs just as well as the lows. The dual voice coils really make it easy to wire however you wish. great, great, great! rockford really makes some high quality stuff! Next system=Rockford POWER series subs.
Ps: if you are running more than one of these subs, i would recommend buying a capacitor to keep your lights from dimming.

An awesome choice whether you want to add one or multiple subwoofers to your vehicle. The P3 12-inch subwoofers can be used in either sealed or ported enclosures, plus you'll get the wiring flexibility of dual voice coils.

P3D212 Features
Speaker Construction
Custom 10-AWG nickel plated push terminals
Dual linear spider with embedded 16 AWG tinsel leads
Extended pole piece and bumped backplate
High excursion Poly-Ether-Ester surround
High-temp voice coil with spun-laced Nomex reinforcement collar
Kevlar Fiber reinforced semi-pressed paper cone and ABS/Acrylic dustcap
Protective PVC textured magnet cover
Reversible diamond cut cast aluminum trim ring
Vented spider cavity

Aluminum V/C Former Rockford Fosgate subwoofers use anodized aluminum voice coil formers that provide excellent heat dissipation. Unlike traditional plastic substitutions, aluminum acts like a heat-sink to quickly dissipate thermal build-up on the voice coil. This keeps subwoofers cool during high SPL conditions.
CEA-2031 Power handling on Rockford Fosgate speakers conform to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means your speaker has the capacity to handle power under continuous damand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.
Reversible Mounting Rockford Fosgate subwoofers can be mounted in either direction. A removable trim ring can be installed on the back or front side of the subwoofer frame. This gives the subwoofer a finished look regardless of mounting configuration.
Stitched Tinsel Leads Multipoint "periodic" stitched lead wire technique reduces the mass of each tinsel lead and spreads stress and strain over a greater area, significantly improving the reliability and performance of the subwoofer.
These stitched tinsel leads withstand extreme duty cycles, fatigue and high current that is critical to robust design.
Venturi-Effect Cooling The "Venturi-Effect" is created by gradually reducing the air-flow exhaust path area, which increases the air speed across the key thermal masses ofthe speaker motor parts maximizing cooling effectiveness.

Mirage MM-6 miniature High-Performance Subwoofer (Black) Review

Mirage MM-6 miniature High-Performance Subwoofer (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Until recently the speakers on our Pioneer Elite plasma were rarely used since all the audio is sourced through a Bose Lifestyle receiver. However, we recently added a new Home Threatre PC to the mix - mainly to get access to the many internet streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu etc and to play foreign region DVDs and Blu Rays. The PC is connected via HDMI and hence both video and audio are sent to the TV (we could have configured the audio to be routed through the Bose system as well but it would have required an extra cable and we were maxed out with the number of components that are attached to the Bose (so we would have to disconnect one in any case). Also, there was the hassle of turning on another device - our Sony HTPC turns on and controls the Pioneer TV just like it was a monitor. The inbuilt HDMI control turns on the TV automatically and turns it to the correct input when the PC is turned on and when the TV is turned off the PC also goes into hibernation. Everything worked perfectly except the audio from the TV's attacked speakers lacked substantial bass.
Another problem we had was that we live in a high rise condo and space is a premium so we didn't want a large sub. The Mirage MM6 was the best fit in terms of aesthetics and performance that we could find. The finish of the MM6 matches the TV perfectly. Also, the Pioneer Elite TVs already include a subwoofer connection that is active so all we needed to do was to plug in a cable from the sub out from the TV to the MM6.
The sound of the MM6 is very detailed and balanced and does not sound muddled or booming like a lot of cheaper subs. The difference to the overall audio quality is quite substantial to say the least. One way to tell is how the THX audio demo sounds (some Disney movies have them at the start).
Great aesthetics and performance. Set up was really easy and you can pretty much put these anywhere and still the sound is excellent.

Klipsch Synergy SUB-10 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black) Review

Klipsch Synergy SUB-10 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I hooked this SW up too my Yamaha tuner and Klipsch Quintet II speakers. The first thing I watched was Apocalypse Now due to the phenominal 5.1 sound. The subwoofer is tremendous. You can have it as loud or as subtle as you want and it doesnt distort. Hook up was a breeze via a single "SW cable" (not supplied). I'm not a tech head but I had no problems putting it all together.
The sub has its own power supply which is an absolute must have from a power set up standpoint.
Just a side note.... all these components are only as good as the bit in the middle (the tuner) and the amount of power that it can push to the individual parts. Once you have it all set right this sub will last you a long long long time before you outgrow it.
I WOULD buy this product again if I had too.

The Synergy Series SUB-10 subwoofer speaker reaches deeper and hits harder, thanks to a 10", down-firing driver coupled to a highly efficient BASH(R) amplifier that creates 200 watts of continuous power and 420 watts of dynamic power. Phase control integrates the subwoofer with the other speakers in the system for consistent sound. An "auto power" feature turns the SUB-10 on and off (standby) automatically, based on the presence-or absence-of an audio signal. A blue/red dual-color LED display indicates whether the unit is "on" or in "standby" mode.In addition to delivering extreme bass impact, the SUB-10 subwoofer speaker features a refined, but aggressive, industrial design. With its charged presence and room-rocking ability, the SUB-10 delivers an adrenaline rush of sound that will impress your friends and provide years of high-quality audio entertainment. A masterpiece of sound and design, the Synergy Series SUB-10 subwoofer speaker shakes things up with its rock-solid performances. NHT SubOne 250 Watt, 10" Subwoofer (Single Speaker) Review

NHT SubOne 250 Watt, 10 Subwoofer (Single Speaker)
Average Reviews:

I ordered a subone online and it arrived with a terrible 60cycle hum. I exchanged it, and the second one had very audible distortion/resonance from the speaker surround at most frequencies. NHT said it needed to be replaced, so I got my money back, and bought the Sunfire True Junior -- a really good sub at the same price. I also bought the True from a local high end dealer where I did not have to worry about arguing about returns and Fedex pickups.

NHT's SubOne subwoofer combines a high-grade NHT driver with a powerful 250-watt amplifier and versatile outboard controls. The SubOne amplifier employs innovative Sunfire technology (designed by Bob Carver) for tight, dynamic control over its 10-inch woofer, which is capable of an impressive 26 millimeters of linear peak-to-peak excursion. The SubOne's outboard controller provides volume and bass-tuning functions, as well as a front-panel switch to tailor the sub's sound for music or movie listening. This subwoofer offers flat response for articulate musical reproduction, while the video contour mode is geared to deliver gut-wrenching punch from demanding home-theater soundtracks. A variety of connection options and a selectable high-pass filter, which lets you curb unwanted low frequencies to better suit your listening space, make the SubOne a flexible addition to any audio system.

Velodyne SCIWDVR Velodyne SubContractor Series In-Wall Subwoofer Review

Velodyne SCIWDVR Velodyne SubContractor Series In-Wall Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have this for almost a year now and I am very satisfied. The bass is rich and clean and deep. Hook up was straight forward because the basement was being built. Should not be much more difficult for retro job. I bought these because I didn't want to see any speakers. I also did not want to compromise on sound. The sub delivers nicely based on my requirements. I get a bit concerned about the energy being delivered into the walls. If I put my hand on the wall on any corner of the room, I can feel the walls under intense pressure more so when a blu-ray movie is on as these seem to have wicked lows. For instance there are certain scenes in Avatar that go really low and the sub has absolutely no trouble authentically reproducing these lows. It is a very immersive experience. It isn't a stretch for this thing to pop the drywall clean off if the drywall isn't done properly. It is hooked up to the SMS-1 even though Audessey is processing the sound as well. To power this, I am using the Buttkicker 4000 which seems to be sufficient. There is some distortion in the amp which makes it thru to the speaker but you would need to be a bass head to notice it. The problem with this speaker is that it is built into the wall cavity behind the drywall. That cavity is cold because the walls are cold. The walls are cold because the basement is below grade. Cold air then leaks into the room via the open port in the subwoofer. Easy fix, stuff the port with some insulation to keep the cold air out. I have had friends over who absolutely refused to believe that there is a sub in the wall. They feel the bass but because it is non directional and well tuned it takes a while to actually find the source. Nice! Bottom line. This sub delivers even for the discerning listener. The sub performs best with the recommended amplifier although you can get by with a suitable alternative with suitable RMS. I am also very pleased with the designer grill because it Is minimalistic. I took one star away for installation because the speaker grill definitely is very difficult to adjust.

Velodyne MiniVee 8-Inch Powered Subwoofer (Black) Review

Velodyne MiniVee 8-Inch Powered Subwoofer (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had quite an assortment of home theater gear in the past, and have even delved into designing my own subwoofers and full-range loudspeakers, but when I finally left college and moved into an apartment, I knew I'd have a hard time living with the bulky speakers and subwoofer I'd used when space constraints didn't prevail. I knew the superlative performance that large-box speakers and subwoofers could give, but I wanted to explore what was possible from some of the smallest speakers available.
I considered a number of small subwoofers, from PolkAudio, Velodyne, and Sunfire, but when I found a refurbished Velodyne MiniVee 8", I knew I'd need to act quickly. I'm extremely happy I did -- this sub is a tiny wonder! It applies a brute-force method to producing bass, eschewing an enormous resonant enclosure in favor of a tiny, rigid box, a beefy long-excursion driver (with a one-piece diaphragm made from a pulp of resin and ultra-strong Kevlar fibers, and with a 12.7 lb. double-stacked magnet assembly), and a 1000W amp that can muster brief 2000W transients.
Right off the bat, this subwoofer's affinity for music shone through. Whether dialed-in for a flat response or goosed for a more thrilling experience, the Velodyne handled the rapid-fire double kick of power metal, the depth and snap of Victor Wooten's Fender Jazz Bass, and the inexorable punch and rumble of Metallica with equal aplomb, while still offering a light touch for pop and acoustic rock when necessary. For movie testing, the MiniVee made short work of the driving bass line and powerful explosions in the final chase scene of The Italian Job. Even when pushed hard, the MiniVee kept its composure, the internal dynamic compression limiting preventing any audible driver strain while still pushing a surprising amount of air.
One thing to keep in mind when considering this sub is the size of your room. It may be the ideal apartment-dweller's sub, but in an 18'x24' room with high vaulted ceilings, it may be outclassed unless you use multiple subs. The MiniVee's maximum output was tested by one online reviewer to be 94dB @ 1 meter with a 32 Hz tone -- by comparison, similarly-priced internet-direct subs can usually muster levels above 110dB, but come at the price of a larger driver and a larger cabinet footprint. For its size, the little Velo generates a prodigious amount of air movement, and delivers exactly the slice of big-budget home-theater performance I was looking for, in a tiny package. Cheers to Velodyne for this feat of miniaturization!

I Love the processor. I just wish I knew how to use it better. I learn more about it everyday. I used this with 2 amplifiers. 1 for the sub and the other for a four channel amp to my door speakers. This works as a processor even for an aftermarket stereo. This is usually used as an integration system for stock stereos to get an aftermarket sound. Love it considering the local stereo shop was asking 500 for theirs. Got it on amazon for around 260.

Just got this hooked up today. Took it to a car stereo shop to have it put in. Sounds good for the price. I used the beastie boys hits record to try it out. Loud enough to make the rear view mirror vibrate. Would reccomend to anyone lookin to have their first sub or not lookin to spend alot of money.

Pinnacle Speakers Subsonic Dual (2) 6.5-Inch 350 Watt Powered Side Firing Subwoofer (Black) Review

I have an Onkyo TXNR609 Reveiver hooked up to this Subwoofer, & the two of them work very well together. My TV room is a medium sized room about 12ft x 12ft & the door shuts so it's an enclosed environment. This Pinnacle woofer is side-firing so it sends its bass both left and right, I think it does a pretty good job filling the room, and I feel the bass even though it doesn't fire right toward the people viewing the TV. So far I've watched a few action movies such as "The Book of Eli," and "Predators" and this Subwoofer has done great with my system, there's no question you can feel the theatrical effects that were intended. It's a pretty good product and it hardly takes up any space which to me was important. If you have a huge room and want the best possible set up you should probably look elsewhere & get a big mean subwoofer. If you want a nice looking Sub woofer that's small but packs a pretty good punch, then this is the one for you.
