Kenwood KVT 617DVD - DVD player with LCD monitor and AM/FM tuner Review

Kenwood KVT 617DVD - DVD player with LCD monitor and AM/FM tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For some context:
I recently installed this head unit in my '04 Grand AM. I'm running it with a pair of Polk DB components, Alpine 6x9 rears, a single Alpine Type S 12" sub in a sealed box and a Pioneer GM-7100 amp feeding the sub around 350W RMS. This unit was an upgrade from my '06 model Pioneer DEH-P5800mp.
First let me say that I (as I imagine most people do) did a LOT of research before choosing this head unit. I encourage anyone interested in an in-car DVD screen to get out to a local retailer to view and test as many options as you can. It's one thing to look at all the specs and details in print but an entirely different experience once the device is in front of you. All the features in the world don't mean anything if the controls are counter-intuitive or the LCD is low quality. I'm happy to report that this Kenwood unit met all of my qualifications and expectations both on paper and in reality.
The screen is bright and contrast is sharp. The built in light sensor dims the screen at night and brightens it during the day, making sure you always have a good picture. There are plenty of tilt and depth options to suit pretty much any application. The touch screen menu interface is a nice alternative to some other screens that force you to use dedicated areas of the screen to arrow through all the options to select the one you want.
The only two drawbacks to the 617 are the lack of an external display when the screen is closed and the 2V pre-out voltage, but both are comparable to the features of similarly priced screens (from companies with less history, or lower quality standards than Kenwood) and are easily balanced out by the positive aspects of the unit.
What really drew me to the Kenwood line was the look of the screen. Most other manufacturers surround the LCD with up to an inch of plastic, wasting space and making for an ugly border around an otherwise nice looking display. Kenwood does away with that, filling nearly the entire fold-out portion of the HU with the ample 7in. screen.
The install went smoothly and the connections to the stock wire harness were no more complicated than a standard CD head unit install. Kenwood provides ample wire to locate the unit's external "brain" in the trunk if you choose, or under a seat as I did.
Don't be thrown by the low price, overall this is a great unit for anyone looking to move up to DVD capability.

i dont own this sub, probably never will. i'm sure it sounds great and i'm also sure it hits deep. like the poster above me said (pimp van) is correct you probably need a van for any more than one of these. if you have your own shop, or your a special person with MTX and they give you one of these, or you just have money to blow than go for it. by as many as you want and blow your brains out with bass. but i promise that, for the cost of one of these subs you can have two very good subs installed with an amp that will out beet one of these every day of the week. i gave it 5 stars because i'm sure it's an awesome sub-woofer, MTX is a great company and has been a great company for a long time. this is just one of those (look what we have) products.

Kenwood DNX6140 6.1-Inch Wide Double-DIN In-Dash Nagivation with Built-in Bluetooth USB/iPod Direct Control/DVD Receiver Review

Kenwood DNX6140 6.1-Inch Wide Double-DIN In-Dash Nagivation with Built-in Bluetooth USB/iPod Direct Control/DVD Receiver

I had this unit profesionally installed in my Porsche Cayman and the custom installation is a very good fit. The navigation system is very easy to use - if you've had a garmin (that is what it is based on), you pretty much do not need to read the manual - it is very intuitive and accurate. I've driven about 2000 miles with it and I like the large bright display - it is easy to change directions and detour on the fly. It does not have voice commands, but the touch screen is easy to use.
I have also used the bluetooth with my Razr phone and have not encountered the problems stated in the earlier review. The microphone is placed near the rearview mirror and only the front speakers come on when I'm talking on the phone - the unit shuts off any music that you might have playing. I use the touchscreen to dial a number and it works well - the folks at the receiving end have no problem hearing me.
There is also an ipod adapter that is in the glove compartment - once hooked up all controls are on the touchscreen - it is easy to use and works well. If one puts in a DVD / CD that takes precedence over the ipod unless you instruct the unit otherwise. I leave the unit to power up when starting the car and it automatically shuts off when the engine is off. I haven't used the XM stations as I do not subscribe to that service but the FM stations pull in fine using the standard antenna that came with the car.
All in all this is a very good unit and I am very happy with it.

Kenwood DNX7120 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor, digital player and radio Review

Kenwood DNX7120 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor, digital player and radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK, my wife got a new car with the Honda Nav system, which has consolidated the tuner, CD changer, XM radio, bluetooth, and GPS with a nice size screen (about 7") and I immediately fell in love with it. Only, it's her car. So when I traded in my car for a new one, I started thinking about getting my own setup.
Enter the Kenwood DNX7120. It does not have all the features I wanted, specifically it was lacking satellite radio and bluetooth, but they are available as optional add-on components. With the add-ons, everything appears and functions as one consolidated unit. Great! The price is decent enough, the unit that is closer to being fully consolidated is priced at slightly over $1500 at this time, while this unit is just slightly over $900. The add-on componenents are roughly $200 extra, so the cost savings seemed to justify going this route.
Quality: from my perspective, great. The unit takes maybe 30 seconds to boot into a usable screen, but while it is booting up it automatically starts playing whatever you left it at. So if you were last listing to FM radio, about 5 - 10 seconds after you start you will at least have music. Sound is great, although my car is not an audiophile's high-end, but I enjoy it. The unit has a large number of potential interfaces, to include USB, I-pod, and A/V RCA connectors. Video display is nice and sharp. Favorites seems to be limited to 6 of each area (FM, XM), but that limitation might be because I haven't fully read the manuals yet. (I'd like to have more than 6 XM favorites).
This unit comes with a remote. The remote has a lot of buttons making it more complex than I care for, so I can't see myself using it while I drive. But maybe your passenger will want to use it.
Drawback: lack of data interfaces. The built-in Garmin would have a good source of updates if it had an SD card reader, but it doesn't. The manual says that updates are either through the SD or the DVD player, so I guess I'm stuck with ordering a DVD when it's time to update. I'll try the USB, but I had read another review that said the USB won't update the Garmin's database.
GPS: It's Garmin (love it or not). I love my portable Garmin Nuvi, and this acts very similar to it, so I feel comfortable with the nav programming. One bad thing (maybe should have put under drawbacks), if I'm running the GPS for a route and the phone rings and I take it, the GPS will not be displayed at all during the phone call. So either you're on a stretch of road that you won't miss a turn, or you'd better make the call short.
Last thoughts: This particular model is now, I believe, out of production and superceded by the DNX 81xx series. So obviously prices will be going down. If you can get this unit at $700 or under, it will be an exceptional bargain. It's still a good deal at current prices. Get all your optional components at one time and install everything together. You probably won't want to take it apart later just to add an add-on component.
UPDATE: After using this for a few days, reading the manual, and playing around with it, I have found that you can talk via bluetooth and still watch the GPS map. The unit will not automatically revert back to your screen, but all you have to do is press the NAV button and you will get the map back. So at this point, I wish I had given it 5 stars, but it seems that you cannot edit your initial star rating.

Kenwood Excelon DNX8120 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor, digital player and radio Review

Kenwood Excelon DNX8120 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor, digital player and radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I researched the best Double DIN units for a couple of weeks. There isn't much on the web about this unit and where there is there is 1 review that says it's great to 1 review that says it's horrible. This unit was more available for me to get my hands on locally then any other. I played with the pioneer a bit and was fairly satisfied with it's interface. The clarion's review on the web was terrible so i don't even bother. So basically it was either the pioneer (forget the model but it's the one with all the bells and whistles that compare to this unit) or this kenwood.
The pioneer installer actually told me that they wouldn't/couldn't install the unit in my '07 vette. Said it was just too difficult and couldn't be done. These people have installed all my alarms/radios/speakers etc for 15 years now and i trust their opinion. However, i read a couple step by step forum posts that showed it be done. Instead of arguing and trying to talk them into it i went to another installer.
The second installer had the kenwood (8120 and 7120) with some other cheaper non-options for me (Dual and some other manufacturer). The kenwood had the built in bluetooth which was a huge plus for me. I'm very very skeptical of bluetooth units in any car. I have had many and have yet to find one that was sufficient to replace me having to hold the phone to my ear. The fact that this was built in gave me hope as all others are add-ons.
Many reviews said the kenwood interface is bad. I don't see why. It is plainly laid out and functional. I think it just has so many options (bells and whistles) that there are many nav keys to get into them it confuses people. It seems pretty good IMO. Could be flashier but i haven't gotten into all the custom skins etc that can be added so maybe it is.
I added the IPOD and Sirius accessories. They work great. The sirius has a better connection then my sirius handheld stiletto which isn't saying much but worth noting. The IPOD connection works good and clean sound. The interface is kind of bulky but when you're used to the iphone's simple interface what isn't going to be bulky compared to it? (Bulky = boring/simple not alot of features)
So everything works great except for the one thing that i knew probably wouldn't before i ever purchased it. The bluetooth phone. Everybody i've talked to on the other end said it sounded choppy and/or had static. I could hear them just fine and the voice dial seems to work ok. However, none of that matters if the other person can't hear you :P I will prob keep the phone to my ear.
Oh, the NAV works great. I've used several nav systems on phones and in rental cars and OEM version's and this is wonderful. It auto updates the routes instantly and doesn't yell at me for not following it's orders. It adapts rather than freaking out. So far so good.
Bottom line -- I would look at the pioneer a little harder if i went back through the purchase process but i doubt it's BT is any better and i don't like it's nav maps. However, for me, if the BT is better i'd swap in a heartbeat. The BT is very important to me though.

I bought and installed this head unit; it took 14 hours with all the cables, accessories, and removal of vehicle parts (seats, consoles, etc). Overall, the unit works well in all but one aspect. I have a rearview camera, gps, bluetooth, usb thumb, apple ipod, amp, and of course quality speakers connected. The only issue I have is with the BT100 I connected to it. Not sure though if it is the BT100, the interface with the 719, or just my cellphone compatability. It does take some patience getting all other accessories to interface correctly, and I wouldn't say the manual is great.
The screen is very good including the tilt feature and if you have a steady hand, you can use the little silver circular button controller. The remote is a plus too as it does many things; if you can remember all functions. A good compromise to higher end head units, and it fits all in 1-DIN with a removable faceplate.

I have owned 2 P3d412 subwoofers for a year now and they are great! This system is really loud! with the volume turned all the way up, its almost difficult to breathe in the car. I have a rockford punch p1000-1bd amplifier powering the two(1259 watt). they are in a dual-ported enclosure. not only do they rattle your car apart, but the sound quality is great! hits the highs just as well as the lows. The dual voice coils really make it easy to wire however you wish. great, great, great! rockford really makes some high quality stuff! Next system=Rockford POWER series subs.
Ps: if you are running more than one of these subs, i would recommend buying a capacitor to keep your lights from dimming.

An awesome choice whether you want to add one or multiple subwoofers to your vehicle. The P3 12-inch subwoofers can be used in either sealed or ported enclosures, plus you'll get the wiring flexibility of dual voice coils.

P3D212 Features
Speaker Construction
Custom 10-AWG nickel plated push terminals
Dual linear spider with embedded 16 AWG tinsel leads
Extended pole piece and bumped backplate
High excursion Poly-Ether-Ester surround
High-temp voice coil with spun-laced Nomex reinforcement collar
Kevlar Fiber reinforced semi-pressed paper cone and ABS/Acrylic dustcap
Protective PVC textured magnet cover
Reversible diamond cut cast aluminum trim ring
Vented spider cavity

Aluminum V/C Former Rockford Fosgate subwoofers use anodized aluminum voice coil formers that provide excellent heat dissipation. Unlike traditional plastic substitutions, aluminum acts like a heat-sink to quickly dissipate thermal build-up on the voice coil. This keeps subwoofers cool during high SPL conditions.
CEA-2031 Power handling on Rockford Fosgate speakers conform to CEA-2031 industry standards. This means your speaker has the capacity to handle power under continuous damand, not instantaneous power handling, that over time, can damage voice coils.
Reversible Mounting Rockford Fosgate subwoofers can be mounted in either direction. A removable trim ring can be installed on the back or front side of the subwoofer frame. This gives the subwoofer a finished look regardless of mounting configuration.
Stitched Tinsel Leads Multipoint "periodic" stitched lead wire technique reduces the mass of each tinsel lead and spreads stress and strain over a greater area, significantly improving the reliability and performance of the subwoofer.
These stitched tinsel leads withstand extreme duty cycles, fatigue and high current that is critical to robust design.
Venturi-Effect Cooling The "Venturi-Effect" is created by gradually reducing the air-flow exhaust path area, which increases the air speed across the key thermal masses ofthe speaker motor parts maximizing cooling effectiveness.

I also have this radio and think its great.. very easy to use and looks awesome.. Martins wrote in his review "and all the streets are pre-programmed, any updates come straight from Garmin via satellite, " - thats NOT true. Software updates need to be downloaded from Garmins website and burned to a CD and copied over. Map updates are usually done yearly and must be purchased (for $140) from Garmin (or another authorized re-seller) - they are NOT free and are NOT sent straight from a satellite.
It doesn't change how good this radio is, but I just wanted to make sure no one was basing their purchase on an incorrect statement.

2 KENWOOD KFC-W3011 & KENWOOD KAC-7204 PACKAGE DEAL Review

2 KENWOOD KFC-W3011 and KENWOOD KAC-7204 PACKAGE DEAL

Hello,
I did some research before buying this package deal, and got some very mixed opinions about the speakers and the amp. Well let me first start off by saying that I've had this product for about two months now and they are still working great with no problems. When properly setup and everything with a closed speaker box (I built my own) these speakers can really kick, and I am very happy with them. I have only had one problem thus far and that was that the amp can be over powered, in which when I turned the amp up too high the blue light on the top would dim every time the bass hit, but let me assure you the amp really does not need to be turned up this high, it is really loud if you leave the sensitivity at 1. Other then that this product has meet all of my expectations and I am very satisfied. This is a very good buy for the price, and I would defiantly recommend this product to anyone looking for a loud sound system at a reasonable price. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at Darkraven21666@hotmail.com and I will do my best to answer them thank you for reading my reveiw and happy shopping to you.

Replaced a Punch four channel amp with this after popping one of the rear channels in bridged mode for the second time. Plenty of options with this amp, my only concerns with this amp so far is placement of some of the input/outputs and the aesthetics of it.

Had this amp pushing 2 8" subs ....the amp was made in 2006 and had it running till 2011...it went out only because some idiot decided to put a cooler on top of it. This amp is just amazing, i couldn't leave my back seats down for more than five minutes without it hurting my ears.

The Kenwood X600F 4 Channel Power Amp with 100 watts of power per each of it's 4 channels. It is fan cooled to keep it working in tight areas without over heating. The amp is quiet and has a low Thd. Not cheap but a good buy to power four channels/four speakers.

Blaupunkt THA-275 PnP 2/1 Channel 400W Amplifier Review

Blaupunkt THA-275 PnP 2/1 Channel 400W Amplifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Despite the bad review I took a chance on this item. I tested it out in the house before going through the trouble of hooking it up in my truck. To its credit the amp has a 3.5mm input so you can hook an ipod or something directly to it which is how I tested it. It sounded pretty good connected to a set of Infinity 6x9 speakers. However when I put it in my truck it became a completely different story. Once I got it all hooked up and turned it on for the first time I couldn't even hear the 6x9's over my factory 4 inch speakers putting out a maximum of 50 watts. Double the power and double the size speaker and I could barely hear them? So I turned the gain up on the amplifier. OK, now I hear them. Just one problem. The amp started cutting out. Apparently anything over minimum power coming from the RCA inputs was overdriving the amp so the audio was choppy.
Nice waste of time and money. I will be sending this P.O.S. back and ordering something that will hopefully work.
