These monitors have excellent sound. I doubt you'll ever hear a complaint about them on that score. There are none even close to as good for the money.
They are, however, one of the most unreliable monitors on the market. Capacitors burn out and power supplies stop working. Many, many complaints of this kind found on the web, with entire websites devoted to fixing them.
A poor design. Avoid.

Onkyo TX-SR705 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Onkyo TX-SR705 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

The reason to get this receiver over the 605 is the step up to 3 hdmi inputs and THX certification.
The power consumption of this unit is more efficient then the 805 and 605. This unit was built after those 2 other models. This isn't the lonely middle child, it shines on its own.
There is also a slew of issues this receiver does not exhibit that the 805 has problems with (check AVS forums for details)
HDMI video looks great, 7.1 sound great! Price is great! :)

I use this channel strip during nearly every recording session I run. The sound is amazing for vocals (in combination with a good mic), producing a warm and yet extremely clean sound.
I have used the unit on acoustic guitar, kick drum, electric guitar and even bass. I was able to get stunning sound from all sources, with a little tweaking of the settings and mic placement.
This unit is capable of immaculate results. Well worth the money.

Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This receiver does a great job. It replaced a 7 yr old Denon 1601 that quit working one night. It drives my 5.1 Polk system at least as good as the older Denon, which always sounded great. At this price, good sound quality is probably a given, so this review is more about the features that set this unit apart. Let's talk video first.
The nice thing about the video processing is that you can hook anything up to it, and it will send the video feed to your TV through one cable. Its basically a big switch, letting you easily change between A/V sources. You just leave your TV on the input through which it is connected, and it feeds the TV whatever source you pick, and sends the audio through the speakers. I hooked up my Samsung DLPSamsung HL-S5688W 56" 1080p DLP HDTV to it via the HDMI output. I used the two HDMI inputs to connect my Samsung DVD player and my Comcast Motorola HD-DVR. I also hooked up my Samsung VCR through a composite input and RCA cables for the VCR's audio. The Onkyo basically passes anything its sent through the HDMI inputs out through the HDMI output. You don't get any upconverting if you use the HDMI inputs and are outputting via HDMI. If you feed it 1080i through the HMDI inputs, it will output 1080i. Feed it 1080p, and you get 1080p output. (I've set my DVR and DVD players to send it 1080 input.) This is not true of the component inputs. It will send those inputs out as 720p, even if you feed it 1080. Just use the HDMI inputs for your 1080 sources. If you have more than two 1080 sources, this Onkyo might not be for you, since it only has two HDMI(1080 capable) inputs. I guess you could get an HDMI switch HDMI 3 Ports Switch With Remote (or some other brand) if you needed it in the future, or just watch your third HD input (video game, maybe) at 720p, or maybe your TV has another HDMI input itself. Another oddity is that it won't send digital sound out the HDMI that you associate with the component video inputs. This is only a problem if you need the TV to produce sound. I use the 5.1 speakers for all sound, so I don't care. The video it outputs seems to be a little better looking than video straight from the source, but I'm not sure its noticably different.
(A word on upconverting of video. Its just interpolation. Upconverting tries to add lines were there were not lines in the original source. Its not going to make SDTV look like HDTV. It might make it look a little better, but its in the eye of the beholder, and some sources seem to look better upconverted than others. Too me, it isn't worth much. My DVR can upconvert, as can my DVD player and even my TV. I've tried them all, and don't think any of them can improve an SDTV picture much. If you want to try this receiver's upconverting, there's a hidden menu to turn on upconverting 480 HDMI input to 720p, but it will also make it downgrade 1080 HDMI input to 720p. Holding down the aux and power buttons will activate the hidden menu. I leave it off, which is called auto mode, but have my DVR upconvert 480 to 1080 before it sends it to the Onkyo. Other things in the hidden menu are standard video settings like sharpness, contrast, etc.)
I also like the remote. Its fairly small, yet controls all my equipment very well, even the Comcast/Motorola DVR. My wife has put away all the other remotes, so that's a good sign. She can operate the entire system with the included Onkyo remote. My 65 year old parents even figured out how to use the entire system, so the remote must be pretty good. It helps that the Onkyo's switching simplifies everything so much. Another feature that is nice is the front panel inputs. You can hook up your digital camera very easily that way. It even has an optical audio input on the front.
The setup is pretty straight forward, especially if you have some experience setting up home theaters. If not, the manual explains things well enough, and a little Internet reading will get you all the way there, if you are like me and enjoy tinkering with the settings. The onscreen display is great. You do have to use the menu system on the front panel to tell it to output the setup menu via the HDMI, otherwise the blank screen will frustrate you. The Audessey auto-speaker calibration does a fairly decent job of configuring your system for your room, measuring distance and equalizing the volume, setting timings and equalizing sounds. I think I improved it by using the manual 5 band equalizers, though. I thought my center speaker sounded flat, so I tinkered with the equalizer and am much happier. I tried messing around with Audessey's crossover settings, but couldn't improve them any, though. Audessey also correctly set up the speaker distances.
One main reason I bought this thing was the future proofing features. It has the Dolby TrueHD and the DTS-HD, so if those every come out I can use them. I can also upgrade to a 7.1 speaker system, but my living room really isn't configured to handle that many speakers. It also offers I-pod connectivity and XM and Sirrius satellite radio connectivity, should I ever want those.
Some common complaints I've read are speaker popping noises and that it runs hot, and some people think that overheating causes the popping. I don't have the popping problems, and I don't think it runs too much hotter than my older Denon. I have it in a decently ventilated cabinet, though. I don't think it would do well in a closed up cabinet without any airflow. My ventilation is simply a crack at the bottom front, and at the top back. Hot air rises out the top back, pulling in cool air from the front bottom. I have about 6 inches of space between the receiver and the top of the cabinet. The receiver is a bit tall, so you should measure your space before your buy it. Make sure you can allow for this ventilation space on top of it.
Lastly, I like some of the many different listening "modes". Dolby Prologic IIx is better than the old Prologic on my Denon. It improves the surround effects of non-DD or non-DTS TV shows. It has the 5-channel stereo that I liked so well in the Denon, too. The other modes seem like gimmicks, though. It does do a good job of picking the appropriate mode, but you can also tell it what to use as a default mode for each source. For example, if the TV feed is in DD or DTS, it uses DD or DTS, but if its in Prologic, you can specify to use Prologic II cinema. However, if your TV show is a concert, you can change it to Prologic II music.
In summary, the Onkyo will simplify your system, allows for future expansion, is easy to use, sounds great, and costs less than anything else out there with this feature set. I recommend it.

Cerwin Vega VE-28S Dual 8" Powered Subwoofer Review

Cerwin Vega VE-28S Dual 8 Powered Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would like to contribute and provide a review for this sub since there is not much out there.I upgraded from a Yamaha yst-215 8 subwoofer. I purchased this sub because it fits in the discrete spot where my wife accepts it at less than 10' width. She is very decore picky. If I could spend more I probably would of went with a velodyne minivee 8 inch sub.
My system
Harman Kardon AVR 347
Polk SurroundBar50
Klipsch KHC-6 in ceiling speakers as rears.
Cerwin Vega VE-28s
PS3
Samsung 52 lcd "71" seriesThe first I thing I noticed when connecting the VE-28s is an annoying humming sound. It drove me crazy and I almost considered retuning this sub. Did not have this problem on my old sub. Yahoo Answers say to try using a 3 to 2 prong plug adapter. It actually worked! 50 cents well spent. Some argue it is not recommended to do this but I simply don't feel like troubleshooting a ground loop problem and want to play with the sub!
Music,
I felt the bass was not tight enough for rock type music. It sounded mushy. Wasn't crisp. My hip hop and techno tracks sounds great. I think sealed subs are best for music applications.
I tried the sock in the port method to tighten up the bass a little. It did help but it took away the subs efficiency and did not produce a strong bass without the sock. I usually have the volume knob 50% to avoid distortion. With the sock I had to increase volume and it introduced distortion. The sock method worked well at low easy listing volumes and high amplification.Home Theater,
This is where I think this sub performs best. With its a ported design (huge 4 inch port). It hits lows and booms well with home theater tracks.I've watch these blu-ray titles so far with this sub.
CloverField - The thumps and explosions were very earth shaking. I can literally feel the socks shake on my ankles and it feels as if there is a thumping monster in my backyard.
Beowulf -The scene where Beowulf battles the dragon the bass rattles the china on its shelves in the kitchen which is a good distance away. Sounds very good. Overall this sub is a much improvement over my last sub. I haven't been exposed to allot of subs but I can say that I am satisfied with this sub for the application that I am using it for. The price tag is very fair and won't break the bank as allot of subs out there.

This system delivers as advertised. My use was to augment an existing home theater ( ~14' x 20' area). The wireless feature was essential to keeping things simple and allowing proper speaker placement into an already finished space. Easy hookup with any modern amp (look for the sub-woofer connection!). It definitely adds a significant new dimension to watching movies, even if you already have a high end speaker system. In this space, the 10 inch woofer is more than adequate to vibrate your seat.

Velodyne SCIWDVR Velodyne SubContractor Series In-Wall Subwoofer Review

Velodyne SCIWDVR Velodyne SubContractor Series In-Wall Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have this for almost a year now and I am very satisfied. The bass is rich and clean and deep. Hook up was straight forward because the basement was being built. Should not be much more difficult for retro job. I bought these because I didn't want to see any speakers. I also did not want to compromise on sound. The sub delivers nicely based on my requirements. I get a bit concerned about the energy being delivered into the walls. If I put my hand on the wall on any corner of the room, I can feel the walls under intense pressure more so when a blu-ray movie is on as these seem to have wicked lows. For instance there are certain scenes in Avatar that go really low and the sub has absolutely no trouble authentically reproducing these lows. It is a very immersive experience. It isn't a stretch for this thing to pop the drywall clean off if the drywall isn't done properly. It is hooked up to the SMS-1 even though Audessey is processing the sound as well. To power this, I am using the Buttkicker 4000 which seems to be sufficient. There is some distortion in the amp which makes it thru to the speaker but you would need to be a bass head to notice it. The problem with this speaker is that it is built into the wall cavity behind the drywall. That cavity is cold because the walls are cold. The walls are cold because the basement is below grade. Cold air then leaks into the room via the open port in the subwoofer. Easy fix, stuff the port with some insulation to keep the cold air out. I have had friends over who absolutely refused to believe that there is a sub in the wall. They feel the bass but because it is non directional and well tuned it takes a while to actually find the source. Nice! Bottom line. This sub delivers even for the discerning listener. The sub performs best with the recommended amplifier although you can get by with a suitable alternative with suitable RMS. I am also very pleased with the designer grill because it Is minimalistic. I took one star away for installation because the speaker grill definitely is very difficult to adjust.

Sony STR-DA2400ES 7.1 Channel Home Theater AV Receiver Review

Sony STR-DA2400ES 7.1 Channel Home Theater AV Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this component to take advantage of all the features of my Sony Bravia XBR KDL-52XBR6 TV and Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray Player. The integration into my system was as easy as possible with the HDMI cables. One HDMI from the Blu-ray player and one from the Comcast Hi-Def cable box into the A/V receiver. One more HDMI from the A/V receiver to the TV. Connect the 7.1 speakers and your done.
The sound field set up was brain-dead simple with the included microphone. The Theatre Sych feature worked perfectly the first time. Put a disk in the player and hit the play button, the TV turns on and selects the correct input and starts playing your movie. I added a Sony TDM-IP1 Digital Media Port iPod Dock for my iPod. Just plug it into the digital media port on the back of the A/V receiver and you're ready to listen to your favorite iTunes playlist. (Warning: the Sony TDM-IP1 Digital Media Port iPod Dock is not compatible with all iPods - check to make sure your iPod is compatible.)
The best part was, obviously, the sound. Without the 7.1 surround, you're missing half of the movie. Also, the music from the iPod takes on a whole new dimension with the A/V receiver's selectable sound fields (Concert Hall, Jazz Club, etc.). I'm sure there are audio purists who would look down their nose at it, but I don't have unlimited funds to put into my A/V system. The price, ease of connection, and feature integration make it perfect for my home theater needs. The upscaling feature of the A/V receiver compensates for the lack of a 1080p signal on regular (Non-HiDef) cable. Not as good as a true 1080p signal, but watchable.
Overall, I'm very pleased with Sony's latest implementation of Digital Home Theater/Entertainment. The picture and sound are state-of-the-art and I can still afford to pay my daughter's college tuition.

Yamaha RX-V2065BL 7.2-Channel Network Digital Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V2065BL 7.2-Channel Network Digital Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just received this receiver (no pun intended) yesterday. I spent around 2 months researching this purchase and finally decided to go with the RX-V2065 because I have always owned Yamaha receivers. I'm amazed at the sound quality!! This unit replaced my old Yamaha HTR-5140 and there is a world of difference in the sound. The internet radio is amazing. It sounds great and there are thousands of stations to choose from. I was listening to a radio station in India earlier. The HD radio is also a very nice feature and the few stations that I do get sound great in HD. I did have some trouble getting connected to my network because for some reason I had my router only assigning 11 IP addresses and they were all taken, so the 2065 wasn't being assigned an IP address. Was an easy fix once I discovered it. So if you have any problems connecting to your network, be sure to check your router settings first, as the Yamaha should just connect with no intervention.
CONS:
As some people have stated in other forums, Yamaha has cut some corners on their new receivers. My Yamahas have always had two power outlets on the back and I have always used one of these to plug in the subwoofer. The 2065 has no power outlets which I did not notice until after I bought it. I'm going to have to get a power strip in order to plug everything in and I won't be able to power on and off the subwoofer simply by turning the 2065 on and off.
The FM reception is not very good at all. I cannot get the two local stations that I listen to (and I could easily get them on the HTR-5140). If you go to the AVSForums and look in the 2065 thread, you will see that others have complained about this as well. With all the choices I have with the internet radio, this isn't going to be a big issue for me, but it might for someone who listens to the radio a lot.
The speaker connectors are very close together. I spent way more time than I should have getting the wires connected. If you do not already have them, I highly recommend getting banana plugs for the connections to the receiver. As soon as I get the chance I'm going to order some banana plugs and cleanup the connections.

Onkyo TX-NR905 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Onkyo TX-NR905 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After a lot of research, I purchased the 905 last year. Onkyo had some production issues (strong demand) and so I waited MONTHS before one became available. On paper, the specs look very good.
Ultimately, Onkyo bought-back my receiver from me because of several design flaws that firmware updates could not fix. For example, the DSPs are poorly designed such that there is a delay of 2-3 seconds when locking onto and audio stream. So every time I fast-forward through a commercial, the video plays for 2-3 seconds with no audio. Changing audio streams on Blu-Ray movies had the same delay.
In addition, there is a significant audio delay that causes a mis-sync between audio and video. Again, Onkyo says a firmware update cannot fix the problem. I bypassed the Reon video processor to help with the problem, but then you lose the built-in scaling feature.
Only service centers are permitted to do firmware updates. In my case, there was a 2-3 week backlog. Thankfully, one update leaked to the internet and I was able to do it myself. However, Onkyo found out about the leak and was not happy.
Onkyo also makes no mention of any firmware updates on their web site. So unless a consumer calls in regarding a problem, they will never know an update is out there. They should clearly state on their product support web site an update is available and to call their service center for more information.
If they can fix these and other defects in the 906 model (due mid 2008), then it would be a winner. But the 905 has so many issues that I switched receivers and now own a Denon. For more insight to the problems, check out the avsforum site where there is a large discussion on this model.

Bought this Amp a few months ago. Hook up is easy...If you can run wires(Cat-5 and speaker) from the Amp to the area you want sound(Zone). All the rest is easy. Another concern I had was that the 40 Watts per speaker would not be loud enough. Let me tell you this is not the case. It's not AC/DC in concert loud, but it's loud. One more thing, get the 2-gang control panels. The 2-gang panels allow you to change CD's, tracks, AM/FM stations, and any other function that the source(CD, AM/FM player)player remote can do. In other words the control panels can learn from the remote.

Excellent product for that price; not that easy to calibrate because the instruction manual is kind of confusing. Set the second zone is also not an easy task.
I have it installed with the screen in my first floor and enjoy it a lot more than the Bose lifestyle 38 set in my game room upstairs; with the JBL speakers (in ceiling) inside and the outdoor Yamaha speakers in my backyard, I expend one third of the money I paid for the Bose system. The quality of the sound and possibilities of changes in the sound is a lot better with separate amplifier as this Denon.

Power up your home theater with the Denon AVR-587 surround sound receiver, which offers seven discrete amplifier channels (75 watts apiece, for 525 watts of total power). This includes for the surround back channel speakers to give you more clearly defined sound localization at the rear for 6.1-channel surround sources such as DTS-ES Discrete 6.1/Matrix 6.1/NEO:6 and Dolby Digital EX. The power amp circuits have been designed to reproduce exceptionally high sound quality with a wide frequency response from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. Denon's multi-room entertainment system feature lets you select different audio sources for listening in different rooms, and the AVR-587 offers two zones.
The AVR-587 is XM Radio ready (optional XM tuner required) and offers XM-HD surround sound. It's also compatible with Denon's ASD-1R control dock for iPods. It features a 56-station AM/FM/XM random preset memory tuning. For video connections, this receiver offers three sets of component video inputs that maintain a flat response up to 30 MHz to ensure sharp video quality, as well as three sets of S-Video switching and a front composite video input.
You can customize the performance of this receiver to suit your home theater and enhance operating ease. Adjustments are easy to make via a dialog format on the fluorescent display on the front panel, and these customized settings are then stored, for each source input and surround mode, in a personal memory setting. Put yourself in the middle of your favorite concert hall and music environments with Denon's DSP acoustic environment simulation modes, which include jazz club, rock arena, video game, virtual surround, and mono movie. Other features include:
Surround playback formats: DTS 96/24 decoding for DVD video; DTS-ES 6.1 and Matrix 6.1; DTS NEO:6; Dolby Digital EX; Dolby Pro Logic IIx; Neural Surround
Denon's 7 Channel Stereo mode transforms 2-channel sources (such as CD, tape, stereo radio) into surround sound, free of delay effects and unnatural artifacts, from all 7 speakers.
8-channel external inputs
Variable subwoofer crossover switching (40/60/80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250 Hz)
Night mode
Glow key remote control
Power transformer for high power, twin drive rectifier, and large aluminum extruded heatsink
Cinema Equalizer The sound from movie sources recorded in Dolby Digital, DTS, or other formats emphasizes high-frequency range due to a theater's front speakers being placed behind the movie screen. If this sound is reproduced in the home theater without correction, the high-frequency range is too strong. This Denon receiver's Cinema Equalizer feature corrects these high-frequency components so that the sound is clearer and easier to listen to when using Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, Dolby Digital EX and DTS surround modes.

Sony STR-DA555ES Receiver Review

The DA555ES does everything brilliantly, especially considering that it can be had over the 'Net for $680, a full $319 below retail. Only reservation so far: the two-way remote takes more than it gives. It self-cancels at awkward moments, needs both of your hands to operate, is heavy, takes up too much space, and once you get past the ititial set-up phase provides a pile of features that you don't really need. But in terms of providing brilliant sound (especially with Digital Dolby DVDs) I've found--or heard-- nothing better.
