Alpine Type-R SWR-1222D - Car subwoofer driver - 500 Watt - 12" Review

Alpine Type-R SWR-1222D - Car subwoofer driver - 500 Watt - 12

Wow, I was a bit skeptical that this sub could be as good as everyone says. I personally love most of Alpine's products so I decided I had to get one of these. I am amazed! This is the best sub I have ever heard. I have it paired with a Kenwood KAC-7205 that pumps out 1000W max (500W RMS) and it's in a 1 Cu.Ft. sealed enclosure. This I only have the bass level turned up to +3 and this subs hits louder, harder, and cleaner than my buddy who has two 12" Kicker CompVX subs with a 1500W amp. If you are looking for a great sub, this is it! You will not be disappointed! I can't even imagine how much harder this would hit with a ported box!

I run this sub with the PC350 center channel, P152 rear speakers, and P362 floor speakers. They are connected to an Onkyo TX-SR706 reciever, and the sound is amazing! I wouldn't buy anything else than infinity unless you want to spend a lot more money. I would definitly buy again! If you aren't sure if you should get them, just buy them!

Velodyne SC8 8-inch Passive Subwoofer - SubContractor Series Review

Velodyne SC8 8-inch Passive Subwoofer - SubContractor Series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're thinking of getting just the sub ... think again. The laws of physics haven't been repealed; the way they get bass out of this small sub is to use equalization in the powerful companion SC-1250 amplifier. That is, you tell the amp you've hooked up this sub, and it boosts the low bass appropriately to get the right output. So as they say, you need the Velodyne amp to use this sub, unless you plan to create and test your own equalization, and use a massively powerful amp to drive it.
For what it is, though, it's a good product, though pricey when you include all the components. It's a very compact sub for custom or high end installs. You would probably want at least two of these for all but a small room. So you end up paying a big premium when it's all added up.

Velodyne VDR-12BV 12-inch 400 Watt Powered Subwoofer with Remote Control Review

Velodyne VDR-12BV 12-inch 400 Watt Powered Subwoofer with Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I searched for a subwoofer to pair with my front corner sub, an M&K 150THX. I wanted a remote volume control. This limited me to the Velodyne brand. My room is 16.5' by 24' with a cathedral ceiling and is open on one side. I wanted a 12" sub since the M&K is a dual 12" model and since the second sub would be placed close to the listening position, did not want an over powering 15" sub. The DD, DEQ, and Optimum lines are very expensive. That leaves the DLS and VDR. The VDR is identical to the DLS in performance (it lacks a set-up feature that I am not to sure about). The woofer, the amp, and the rear panel inputs, outputs and switches are identical. Per the discussion sites, the VDR series, now discontinued, was created to be sold at mass merchandise stores at a lower price (for those "site" people, they sent a July 2009 build date model). The price here made it an easy choice.
The sub came two days after ordering from HiDef. It came in perfect condition. With the remote, it was easy to integrate into my PSB surround system. More tests to follow, but so far so good. I gave it 5 stars bases on the value, I'm sure there are better more powerful subs, but I didn't need anything more than this one.

Energy S-10.3 800-Watt 10-Inch Subwoofer (Black) Review

Energy S-10.3 800-Watt 10-Inch Subwoofer (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the take 5 speakers, and was debating between the 8" or 10" sub, I decided to go with the 10". I have had a lot of audio equipment over the years, and I really enjoy a nice clean "thumping" bass, and this unit delivers, with plenty to spare.
My only complaint is, this unit has a real nice blue light that comes on when activated, and they are notorious for blowing out, usually in less than a week. This doesn't affect the performance in any way, just no light. Now if you have five minutes to spare, and can use a screwdriver, you can replace this bulb for roughly $1. The catch is, you kill your warranty if you do. Energy customer service wants you to ship the unit back to them, to the tune of between $20-$30, (it is a heavy piece). depending on where you live, where they will replace the bulb, under warranty, and ship the unit back to you, with roughly a 2-3 week wait.
Makes absolutely no sense, and the reason for four stars, but if you don't mind living without the light, (it will blow) it is one nice sub, that can handle just about anything you can throw at it, even at high levels, without breaking up.

EMP Tek ES10iB Powered Subwoofer Review

EMP Tek ES10iB Powered Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This sub is great for what it is, a budget oriented 10" sub that plays loud, efficient, and very musical. What it isn't however, is a subwoofer worthy of the Emp Tek flagship e55ti tower speakers. EMP Tek needs a 12" sub similar to the RBH SX-12, Epik Legend or Rythmik FV12 to do justice to those towers. The problem with this subwoofer is one thing:
Extension. 35hz as a 3db down point is just not low enough! It's fine for music, and the 10"/100w will fill a small to medium sized room decently, but movies have bass content into the teens, so a 22hz 3db downpoint is more realistic! Bigger and stronger, please and thanks!
With all that said, I'd still pit this subwoofer against many in its price class. That includes some nice subs like the Velodyne Impact-12, HSU STF-1, Lavasub 12", Dayton Sub120 etc. This is still MUCH better company to be in than the total garbage subwoofers you'll find at best buy IE Klipsch, Polk, Bose. or the overpriced speaker company subs you'll sometimes find IE Paradigm, PSB, Axiom.
I guess my POINT is that EMP Tek needs a step-up model from the ES10i because the ES10i is a great budget subwoofer but budget subwoofers aren't great for great home theaters because the sub can make a great movie amazing, and a bad action movie worthwhile!
Bottom Line: Feel free to buy this sub if this price point appeals to you. But if you want a truly worthwhile experience, double up on the price and get a better sub, and better yet, get two in order to get great in-room response. Yes, buy two huge subs. If you're a woman and the idea doesn't appeal to you, then you just made me cry. If you're a man and the idea doesn't appeal to your wife, then you had better cry.

Energy RC-Micro 5.1 Surround Speaker System (Black) Review

Energy RC-Micro 5.1 Surround Speaker System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Energy RC-Micro 5.1 surround sound speakers pack awesome sound in small and rather stylish design. I am not an audiophile, but I used to have large Infinity speakers that sat on the floor, and these Energy speakers have sound quality far superior to them.
The powered bass rocks the house and can deliver plenty enough bass to fill my 13 x 20 foot room and more. The surround speakers have a uniquely crisp sound so that your home feels as though it was part of the original video and music making experience.
Although these speakers can belt out over 100 watts per channel without a problem, I wouldn't recommend these speakers for the person who wants to listen to their music at deafening levels. The bass can deliver but the unique qualities of the surround speakers are somewhat lost at maximum power . . . or my ears can't adequately process all of the noise.
I find these speakers excellent for surround sound TV and movie watching, excellent for music at normal listening levels (where the neighbors in the next house are not complaining), and good for the times when you want to make neighbors listen to your music.

Wharfedale SW250 Powered Subwoofer (silver) Review

Wharfedale SW250 Powered Subwoofer (silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for a nice subwoofer to replace the one I was using. The Wharfedale SW250 was not it. I wasted $160 dollars in shipping charges on this unit. Live and learn, I guess. What's wrong with it?
It's very heavy, about 65 lbs. This in itself, wasn't a concern for me, but I hadn't planned on having to send it back. The sub appears well-constructed, but that isn't enough. The SW250 doesn't really sound all that impressive. For a 10" driver backed by a 250-watt RMS amplifier, it didn't really have that good a sound. I'm not a person who listens to that overly bass-heavy hip hop stuff, but mostly classic rock or jazzy music like Norah Jones or Donald Fagen. For a sealed enclosure, it really didn't exhibit the tightness I expected. I don't care much for ported enclosures when it comes to music. Most professionals realize ported enclosures don't typically produce realistic bass. There is always a sharp peak in the response curve of such designs.
Another issue was that the sub had a loud hum noise when turned up enough to put out any amount of bass. You could feel the cone vibrating even without the input cables connected. A speaker should make no sound without input.
The remote control is nice for changing gain, crossover frequencies, etc. and it has 4 presets. The problem is, there are no controls on the sub itself, save for a power switch. You can't operate this sub without a remote, which makes me wonder about months or years down the road when it's lost or breaks. The sub would then become rather useless.
Last and certainly not least, the sub doesn't even have an auto-on feature. All it has is "Standby" via the remote and it stays warm all the time, indicating a pretty high idling current. When I called the dealer about it, they told me there was an auto selection on the sub, but there isn't. That feature is only on Wharfedale's smaller 8" model.
So I returned this sub and spent more and I'm impressed with the one I got: Newton Series P300HD Powered Subwoofer http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00345HIHQ
It is simply amazing and utilizes 12 drivers! Yes, six 5-1/4" active drivers and six 6-1/2" passive radiators. It sounds better than the Wharfedale and the fact there is absolutely zero vibration in the cabinet is engineering genius.

Energy ESW-8HG 8" 200 watt Take Classic subwoofer Review

Energy ESW-8HG 8 200 watt Take Classic subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Allow me to start off by saying I am by no means an audiophile, and don't feel it necessary to spend more on a sound system than the components I am connecting to it. This subwoofer nicely complements a small bookshelf audio system, and if you intend to use it as a secondary audio system, or in an apartment or other setting where you can't have it up too loud, it sounds very nice at lower volumes.
However, that's about all this subwoofer is good for. It is obvious that the driver and amplifier are of good quality - they can handle low frequencies at room shaking volumes with ease. Unfortunately, the box is poorly constructed, resulting in "port noise" that completely overpowers the volume of the bass it's producing at frequencies as high as 50hz. Considering the box is allegedly "tuned" for frequencies as low as 35hz, that is unacceptable. (For reference - while frequencies of 20-35hz are largely inaudible, they are the frequencies you "feel" during explosions etc in movies)

This is a great sub. It has a good size enclosure for a 12 inch driver and feels quite solid. No noticeable resonances when you rap on the unit. Can be converted for either down firing or forward firing operation for use in a cabinet as my installation requires. Despite this necessary poor placement it fills my rather large theater room with strong base. The "list price" of $799 on amazon is wrong though. Polks own web site shows it as $679.95 which is the supposedly discounted price on amazon.

So I have this beast hooked up to the 10ZX750.1 Kicker MONO Class D Amp (unfortunately NOT sold by Amazon) and together these BUMP HARD. While this might not be as powerful as the 2-Ohm model L7 10in, this subwoofer has yet to be played on full volume because it causes my entire car (windows, seats, mirrors, etc) to vibrate. Recommend? Yes, absolutely. Be forewarned that you WILL need a capacitor to pump out enough energy to make this beast thump (I have a 20 farad BOSS capacitor that runs at ~14 that works beautifully).

Mirage MM-6 miniature High-Performance Subwoofer (Black) Review

Mirage MM-6 miniature High-Performance Subwoofer (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Until recently the speakers on our Pioneer Elite plasma were rarely used since all the audio is sourced through a Bose Lifestyle receiver. However, we recently added a new Home Threatre PC to the mix - mainly to get access to the many internet streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu etc and to play foreign region DVDs and Blu Rays. The PC is connected via HDMI and hence both video and audio are sent to the TV (we could have configured the audio to be routed through the Bose system as well but it would have required an extra cable and we were maxed out with the number of components that are attached to the Bose (so we would have to disconnect one in any case). Also, there was the hassle of turning on another device - our Sony HTPC turns on and controls the Pioneer TV just like it was a monitor. The inbuilt HDMI control turns on the TV automatically and turns it to the correct input when the PC is turned on and when the TV is turned off the PC also goes into hibernation. Everything worked perfectly except the audio from the TV's attacked speakers lacked substantial bass.
Another problem we had was that we live in a high rise condo and space is a premium so we didn't want a large sub. The Mirage MM6 was the best fit in terms of aesthetics and performance that we could find. The finish of the MM6 matches the TV perfectly. Also, the Pioneer Elite TVs already include a subwoofer connection that is active so all we needed to do was to plug in a cable from the sub out from the TV to the MM6.
The sound of the MM6 is very detailed and balanced and does not sound muddled or booming like a lot of cheaper subs. The difference to the overall audio quality is quite substantial to say the least. One way to tell is how the THX audio demo sounds (some Disney movies have them at the start).
Great aesthetics and performance. Set up was really easy and you can pretty much put these anywhere and still the sound is excellent.

JBL Balboa SUB 10 - 10-Inch Powered Subwoofer Review

JBL Balboa SUB 10 - 10-Inch Powered Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this subwoofer to replace an old subwoofer from a HTIB (Home Theater In a Box) system. I chose this particular subwoofer first because of the brand and second because of the price. I have used JBL products for years (Home, Car, and Professional) and have always been very pleased with their performance. This one is no different.
When it arrived, I was quite surprised at it's size. It is much bigger than I expected for a single 10" subwoofer but still comfortably fits in next to my entertainment center.
As for the sound, I would consider this subwoofer very good but not great. It has much better low end extension than your typical HTIB subwoofer but it's not going to shake the ground. I have never been fond of 10" low frequency drivers and this one isn't going to change my view of them. For some reason, I always find 10" drivers to be more "muddy" sounding than a 12" or even an 8" driver. However, when the next step up (12") costs three times what this one does, I can certainly make an exception. That said, this subwoofer does sound good and has no trouble filling my entire living room with good solid bass.
The features on this subwoofer are also very good. It has speaker level and line level stereo inputs as well as a separate line level LFE input for feeding from a Home Theater receiver. One thing to note, the manual says that the LFE input will bypass the crossover setting. This is actually preferable since the crossover function should be handled by your receiver so that the sub picks up where the main speakers drop off and there is no or very little frequency overlap.
One thing to be cautious of is the power that this thing has. 100w RMS/225w Peak may not sound like much but it is more than enough to fill your average living room/den or to upset your neighbors if you live in an apartment.
All in all, this is an excellent choice for the price and I am very pleased with it.
