Yamaha RX-V667 7.2-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V667 7.2-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own a rx-v663 and upgraded this past weekend to the RX-V667.
Skipping the 665 model was a good thing.
This one has a great on screen GUI for changing the settings.
It's an overlay, so you don't lose the video in the background when changing settings.
It pops out from the left side and then you scroll up and down to pick the setting
to change. Then those options are popped up from the bottom of the screen and you scroll
right and left.
6 HDMI is more than enough for me, in fact I have 3 left over after changing out things.
Biggest advantage is I am now able to plug in everything in to the receiver and able to change
the label that shows up on the receiver and the tv screen when changing sources.
My components running into the receiver are as follows
Oppo BDP-83
PS3
Computer with HDMI interface
(radeon 5770 so I get sound and audio)
These next two are connected via Component video (R,G,B)
Xbox 360 (optical out for audio)
Wii
To run all these the Remote has 5 HDMI buttons and 6 AV buttons.
I can actually choose each source independently with one button, kind of nice.
I also have the YDS11 Ipod dock, it works great with the new receiver. Interface is greatly improved
with album art being shown to the left of the song title on the screen and browsing capabilty. This really looks a lot better than it did on the RX-V663 and is another overlay screen. Now they just need a good screen saver to go with it.
This would all be worthless if the sound quality did not match up with the 663.
Big one for me was continued support of DSD across HDMI. The Oppo BDP-83 plays SACD disks and so does
my PS3. The 667 has a signal information selection and from the PS3 it reports PCM as it should since
the PS3 converts it to PCM before sending the signal to the receiver. The Oppo using the same disk reports
DSD back on the receiver.
and yes the sound quality equals the 663.
Sidenote: There is an audible difference in the sound when switching to Pure Direct Mode.
I played John Hiatt's "Master of Disaster" which is a Hybrid SACD and switched between
straight and Pure Direct. Pure direct seemed to have less bass, the straight mode was obviously
making adjustments to the bass in the background. Honestly though this could be due to my
speaker setup as I do not have a sub-woofer. IT's a 5.0 setup on mine. Try Pure Direct Mode and see if
it makes a difference with your DSD/SACD disks. I thought the clarity was better.
Setup was easy, hardest part was undoing everything I had done to get everything to work on the 663.
YPAO mic setup for sound, seemed to have not changed from the last time I did it, so don't expect anything
new here.
I have not tried setting up the remote to control any other components. This did help in the end
as it cut out 2 remotes and I am down to 3 now due to eliminating a switch box I no longer needed
and the HDMI switch I bought that also acts as a fan for my PS3.

Infinity KAPPAFOUR 125W x 4 Full Range Class D Amplifier Review

Infinity KAPPAFOUR 125W x 4 Full Range Class D Amplifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This amp does exactly as advertised. I put amp in my 1993 4x4 Ford Explorer. Since I don't have a super cap, I connected a high density AGM battery directly to it with 8 AWG cables less than 2 feet long and connected an oscilloscope to the amp's power terminals to monitor the battery voltage. I connected four Kappa 682.9CF 4-Ohm speakers that can handle 100 watts, and proceeded to jam. The voltage level wiggled about 0.3 Volts at most. Moving the scope to the speaker terminals confirmed that the RMS voltage of the audio signal was exceeding 100 Watts and I could see clipping going beyond that level but the Kappa speakers popped before the clipping started. I tried both the stock wiring which is either 16 or 18 AWG wire and 12 AWG fine wire to the speakers. None of which made any difference. I could be wrong but I don't think 125 Watts is that much over 100 Watt speakers that they should so easily pop so it doesn't look good for those 5x7 speakers but I've yet to look into it and that will be another review. I guess I'm asking too much from a small speaker. So, I have two issues with this amp. First, the amp has a low frequency boost for two of the channels, and none for the other two...shucks! I discovered that this boost really accentuates the low low frequencies and makes these Kappa speakers sound quite impressive although not much beyond a high listening level because these lows cause them to pop excessively as per noted above. So I wish I could do the same for the other two channels. Bummer. The head unit has low frequency boost also but not as low as this amp's low frequency gain has control over. The second issue is that this amp has a prominent hiss. The noise comes from the input gain stage because turning the input gain down to half way minimizes this hiss to be on the edge of acceptable. At this level, the hiss is noticeable only when the engine is off and there is nothing playing. Comparing this amp to my over 20-year old Alpine 3553 as far as audio quality is concerned is on par with the Kappa amp with accurate frequency response but that old Alpine has absolutely no hiss even at maximum input gain, but to be fair, it's only 35 Watts/channel at 4 Ohms. On the other hand, it's half the size of the Alpine and I guess it's kind of hard to make class-D amps noise free at the cost of size. That's OK, I fortunately managed the noise level. By the way, disconnecting my head unit from the Kappa amp did not affect this hiss. My head unit is the Kenwood KDC994 which has 4-Volt outputs. For those of you who mentioned that your speakers pop or click when your new head unit switched from song to song, it's likely because you're using the stock amp or bought an amp that has its inputs not floating or not at 0 Volts. My stock amp has a 4-Volt offset on its inputs and my speakers popped when each song ended and again when each song started and my Kenwood forced the offset to 0 Volts. That popping went away with this new amp and my Alpine amp. Finally, the amp seems well built and the adjustment controls and switches have a high quality, smooth feel to them while adjusting them. I'm happy with the head unit and the amp, but obviously, not so much with the Kappa speakers since they popped at a level I didn't expect. The battery is a high capacity AGM marine type 23 AH battery. I could run the amp for about 4 hours before the battery Voltage dropped to about 10.6 Volts which is essentially the depletion point. Oh yeah, one final note. I couldn't really address thermal issues because it's cold this time of year but the amp never got warm enough to notice. I don't think I can push it good and hard with these speakers because they pop to easily. I admit, I am a bit bass happy when it comes to a good song that benefits from it but I tone it down on easy songs, I promise. My test music consisted of highly dynamic music from rock, classical, Celtic, country, and Christian, much of which had extensible deep bass instruments, the kind that shake your pant leg because the speaker is next to your leg. I did some rap which the speakers just could not handle. I dropped a star due to the noise issue. Otherwise, it's a great amp, at least in the winter time.

I purchased this amp to drive a pair of custom built subs; not Boston Acoustics. I picked up a "Like New" model, it was. Set up could not be easier with the exception that I had to provide RCA pugs to connect to my Yamaha integrated amp. Runs like a champ; clean looks and clean sound. Great value.

Pioneer VSX-821-K 5.1 Home Theater Receiver, Glossy Black
Average Reviews:

I was looking for a midrange receiver with features and functions that are useful but not so many that I don't know what to do with them all. At the price this unit has enough HDMI ports for me to connect my PS3, Xbox, and cable box. The onscreen setup is easy enough and the instruction booklet is actually very helpful. It is nice to be able to connect my iPod and use an onscreen interface to select songs and playlists; however, it is not very nice to look at and I expected a bit more from the interface - it looks like an old MSDOS screen. I also wish the little cover for the iPod connects in the front didnt pop-off, I wish it slid so I don't have to worry about losing it. The banana connectors in the back seem quite sturdy and were easy to connect with the speaker wire. Over all I am very happy with the purchase and it is up to date enough that I will be using it for many years to come.

Yamaha RX-V671BL AV Receiver (Black) Review

Yamaha RX-V671BL AV Receiver (Black)
Average Reviews:

I brought this AV receiver after reading the review for it on CNET.com. For those of you, like me, who need a rich complex sound from all your entertainment sources, this item is a must have. It produces a rich, complex, layered and full bodied sound output. The sound experiences it produces is unlike anything else, whether you're watching a movie, listening to background music, or blasting music for a party your throwing at your place. This device makes the room feel like your speaker.
The great thing about this device is that you can stream Pandora and internet radio on it, so you have your input and output in one convenient device. You can also use your iPod as a remote! (or your web browser for that matter)
This is the perfect device for those of you who look to have good quality sound from a host of different devices and want the convenience of a user friendly receiver. The interface is cutting edge and the sound experience it produces is varied, adjustable, and rich.
If you love technology and entertainment, this is the missing link that brings it together and a worthy investment for the entertainment connoisseur.

Denon AVR-1911 7.1 Channel A/V Home Theater Multi-Source / Multi-Zone Receiver with HDMI 1.4a supporting 1080p and 3D (Black) Review

Denon AVR-1911 7.1 Channel A/V Home Theater Multi-Source / Multi-Zone Receiver with HDMI 1.4a supporting 1080p and 3D (Black)
Average Reviews:

Note - This review is for the nearly identical Denon AVR-791
There are three $500 receivers to consider, if you're buying one in 2010 - Onkyo TX-SR608, Pioneer VSX-1020-K and this one. All three feature the latest HDMI 1.4, which is necessary for 3D signals. Here's how they compare:
-The Onkyo is the most powerful in terms of real world performance, followed by the Denon and finally the Pioneer. All three perform at par for normal listening volumes, but the Onkyo can handle very high volumes the best, while the Pioneer runs out of breath
-The Denon has Audyssey Multi-Eq, which automatically calibrates the receiver for use in your room (a mic is provided). The Onkyo has a similar but less versatile Audyssey 2EQ. Pioneer has its own system called MCACC which also works well, but Audyssey may be slightly better.
-All three can upconvert analog sources via HDMI - hence you'll only need one HDMI cable to connect to the TV. The 1.4 spec supports an audio return channel, so the TV's sound can be output to the receiver without extra cables. The Pioneer and Denon use the excellent Anchor Bay chipset, while the Onkyo uses the slightly inferior Faroudja DCDi chipset for video processing.
-The Pioneer and the Denon have a front USB input where you can connect your iPod (or iPhone) directly. You can browse playlists etc using the receiver's remote via the onscreen display. Since this is a digital connection, the sound quality is excellent - while the iPod can be connected to the Onkyo via an analog cable, it does not sound as good and cannot be navigated using the remote.
-The Denon offers an equal variety of inputs as the other two, but has fewer of them - eg, one optical input vs 2 for Pioneer and Onkyo
- The Pioneer's iPhone app is just a gimmick and of limited utility - I would prefer using the main remote.
Overall, I decided to purchase the Denon since it has Audyssey MultiEQ and adequate power (unlike the Pioneer) as well as excellent video processing and iPod connectivity (unlike the Onkyo). I have been using it for about a week and am very pleased with the level of performance offered.Update on December 3, 2010: The receiver continues to perform well and I have no new complaints. However, I have noticed that both Pioneer VSX-1120-K and Onkyo TX-NR708 are available for ~$500, while discounts on this and other Denon receivers are marginal (here on Amazon). Hence, both those higher spec'd receivers now represent better value than the AVR-791/1911, if you're looking to spend ~$500 on a receiver. Also, the Onkyo TX-SR608 and Pioneer VSX-1020-K are now available for ~$350 and hence have become more compelling alternatives to this receiver.

Each of its 7-amplifier channels produce 90-watts of power, delivering detail and dynamics to music and movie soundtracks. They can be configured for 7.1 channel surround sound, or drive a 5.1 channel system in the main room and power a pair of speakers in a second 'zone". It's equipped with 1080p and 3D (all formats) compatible HDMI 1.4a Repeating technology, delivering both audio and video to your HDTV with single HDMI cable. This HDMI connectivity supports the latest generation surround sound formats available on Blu-ray disc, including Dolby TrueHD and DD+, dts-HD and dts-HR. Also included is Dolby Laboratories new Pro Logic IIz Matrix decoding featuring front height effects channels that expands front soundstage. The AVR-1911 boasts a number of Audyssey technologies. Advanced Audyssey MultEQ analyzes a speaker systems interaction with the listening room at up to six measurement points (microphone included), and then automatically corrects the response to optimize clarity and tonal balance. Audyssey Dynamic Volume is an automatic volume-leveling system that tracks audio dynamics to eliminate the irritating volume swings between TV shows and commercials. Audyssey Dynamic EQ is also on board to ensure rich bass and smooth tonal balance at low volume listening levels.

Awesome amp so far!!! At the moment Im running 2 Alpine SWR-1023D Type R subs with it. Needless to say it is definitely more than enough for 2-600 watt rms subs @ 2 ohms. I have 2 more 1023D's ordered........ Cant wait to see how it handles all 4 @ 1 ohm.
Update 4/3/11 The amp is still working flawlessly. Although upon further inspection of the amp I noticed that the (warranty void if seal is tampered with or broken) seal is in fact broken. Kind of makes me wonder??? Not to happy about this recent discovery.
This was supposed to be new!

Denon AVR-1611 7.1 Channel A/V Home Theater Multi-Source / Multi-Zone Receiver with HDMI 1.4a supporting 1080p and 3D (Black) Review

Denon AVR-1611 7.1 Channel A/V Home Theater Multi-Source / Multi-Zone Receiver with HDMI 1.4a supporting 1080p and 3D (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After having an unfortunate incident with a lightning strike at my home, my Denon AVR-1908 suffered irreparable damage. Within a few weeks my insurance company sent the check to replace it and the hunt for a new receiver was on.
Having owned a Denon, I was very familiar with the quality and outstanding sound their receivers can produce - but made the decision to research other brands such as Onkyo, Yamaha, Pioneer and of course the new line of Denon AV receivers. I have a 7.1 surround sound Home Theater so my future purchase had to meet that criteria. After some research I had narrowed my search down to the Denon AVR-1611 and the Onkyo TX-SR508 receivers, then visited a local electronics store to compare the two receivers in functionality and sound. After comparing the two I found that the Denon delivered a more rich, deep sound reproduction with outstanding surround sound imagery as compared to the Onkyo, at least in my opinion.
The Denon AVR-1611 offers some features that I definitely wanted, and some that I may want to utilize should I decide to upgrade my Home Theater. It offers HDMI 1.4a inputs and output for 3D movie features (still on the fence with 3D), if I decide to upgrade to a 3D capable Home Theater this receiver will accommodate this option. The rear I/O panel is extremely clean compared to older AV receivers, due to HDMI. There are 4 HDMI inputs and 1 HDMI output eliminating the need for multiple component inputs, this made for a much quicker and cleaner equipment setup. The various available sound formats, i.e., DTS Master, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus encoded with this receiver switch very efficiently with the source material - to date I have not had to adjust this manually. The receiver is very pleasing aesthetically, and fits in well with the rest of my components but does have some heft to it. The Denon AVR-1611 also offers ARC (audio return channel) via the HDMI output to allow for both sending and receiving an audio signal, but please note that your television must also have the ARC feature. The other plus with this receiver is the upconversion of standard definition DVD's due to the HDMI upconversion feature, althought it now sounds cliche - it truly makes my older movies look like new again with near HD resolution. The only criticism I have that prevented my awarding this receiver a perfect 5 stars is the lack of an AC Power Outlet in the back of the receiver. I found this to be a real convenience option for plugging in my JBL PB10 powered subwoofer. I wonder if this has been eliminated due to reducing the overall power draw for electronics in meeting with "GREEN TECHNOLOGY"? Regardless, I found that I missed having the outlet and wish they would incorporate it back into the design.
The owners manual can be intimidating, with its overview of all the features and functions designed in the AVR-1611 - this is where the AUDYSSEY AUTO SETUP feature shines! Denon included a specialized microphone to allow owners the convenience of letting the receiver setup your surround parameters without hours of manual work. Not only did this feature effectively set the surround sound parameters of all 7 speakers and my subwoofer, it also measured the distance from each speaker to the listening area, as well as decibel/gain setting for each individual speaker. It even determined the size of my speakers from small to large! To gauge the accuracy, I took out my tape measure and my Radio Shack sound level meter and began testing, and found the accuracy of Audyssey to be remarkable! For the novice setting up their Home Theater this feature would be invaluable.
To date I can offer no complaints, save for the missing AC power outlet. The surround sound imaging is outstanding, music CD's sound amazing, and the Denon AVR-1611 has real ease of use. It supports all of the most popular sound formats and upconverts my standard definition DVD's beautifully. I would highly recommend this receiver to anyone who is on a budget looking for an AV Receiver that offers a multitude of features and is as close to audiophile reproduction as you can get. It certainly pleases this movie buff.

I run this amp with my MTX JH5512X2D enclosure. This pushes those subs at their RMS of 800 watts without any distortion, even at extremely high volume levels. I use this amp with a X15HCAP20 (search it, amazon has it) 20 farad capacitor. Flawless performance, no drops/cut outs.
Do not buy this from DiscountJungle, they are not an authorized retailer and you will not get a factory warranty! If you buy this from them and it blows in a month, you'll be out all your money. Be wary of unauthorized resellers.
As a follow up edit, this amp actually blew on me. MTX repaired it just fine. Paid shipping to them, they paid shipping back.
