I run this sub with the PC350 center channel, P152 rear speakers, and P362 floor speakers. They are connected to an Onkyo TX-SR706 reciever, and the sound is amazing! I wouldn't buy anything else than infinity unless you want to spend a lot more money. I would definitly buy again! If you aren't sure if you should get them, just buy them!

Velodyne SC8 8-inch Passive Subwoofer - SubContractor Series Review

Velodyne SC8 8-inch Passive Subwoofer - SubContractor Series
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're thinking of getting just the sub ... think again. The laws of physics haven't been repealed; the way they get bass out of this small sub is to use equalization in the powerful companion SC-1250 amplifier. That is, you tell the amp you've hooked up this sub, and it boosts the low bass appropriately to get the right output. So as they say, you need the Velodyne amp to use this sub, unless you plan to create and test your own equalization, and use a massively powerful amp to drive it.
For what it is, though, it's a good product, though pricey when you include all the components. It's a very compact sub for custom or high end installs. You would probably want at least two of these for all but a small room. So you end up paying a big premium when it's all added up.

Yamaha YHT-150 600-Watt 5.1-Channel Home Theater in a Box (Silver) Review

Yamaha YHT-150 600-Watt 5.1-Channel Home Theater in a Box (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We wanted an HTB (Home Theater in a Box) for less than $300 for our Master Bedroom, to go with the new small HDTV. We already had the other components (DVD, etc.), so we wanted an HTB without the DVD but with plenty of component connections for future expansion. After some shopping we purchased the Yamaha YHT-150.
However after purchasing this product, I struggled for 2 weeks to like it, but in the end I finally did. I debated about taking it back and I looked at several other systems during these 2 weeks, but really couldn't find anything better in this price range.
Both the receiver and the powered subwoofer are excellent, but my 2 week struggle was with the other 5 speakers (NS-AP-1500s).
After setting the system up, I tried the DVD movie "Twister" (always a good HTB test movie), but the sound was "flat", "hollow", somewhat "tinny" and low volume (IOW, had to turn the volume way up). The speaker sound reminded me of being at the drive-in theater (remember what those speakers sounded like). This is when I entered my 2 week struggle with the system.
To start sorting it out, I tested 2 of the speakers on another system, and quickly discovered that they are not very efficient (it takes power to get sound out of them), but I also discovered that the sound they produced was very clear and clean, unlike the YHT-150.
So back to the YHT-150, I realized that the speaker wire that came with the system was only 22 gauge wire (though it looks heavier) which I used to set it up. So I theorized that this wire was too small for the power required to drive these speakers, and that this might be responsible for the unwanted sound effects. So I bought $5 worth of cheap 16 gauge speaker wire at Home Depot for a test, and rewired the front 3 speakers. Then I turned on the local classical FM station, and WOW, what a world of difference the 16 gauge wire made! I could hear richness and detail in the piano solo, and even people quietly moving around in the background of the recording.
However at the new more powerful and cleaner sound levels, I could now hear that the speakers had no low-end bass (which is noted in the manual specs), but the subwoofer was not filling in the bass correctly to compensate for this. There would be a sound from the speakers (like a voice for example) that should have a bass component, but only a rumble from the subwoofer. This problem turned out to be the cheap subwoofer cable that came with the system.
So I ordered a 100ft roll of good quality 16 gauge speaker wire and a good quality subwoofer cable, both for $38 total (I caught both on sale), and both of these have transformed the system. The speakers now deliver good clean clear sound at significantly reduced volume settings. The required volume settings are still higher than I'd like due to the speaker inefficiency, but the receiver has more than enough power to drive them in a bedroom setting, so this is not an issue. The excellent subwoofer is now very clean and tight, and it accurately fills in the bass for sounds that have bass.
In the end, I've come to like this system, and it does a really good job for the reasons we bought it. I'm not sure I'd recommend it for a large living room as I don't think it has the power to fill a large room, but it can fill a bedroom or a smaller living room just fine.
I have a couple of other issues with the sytem. First, the remote looks a little cheap, but it works fine. Second, the system was a little complicated to figure out and setup, and I think this system needs to be setup correctly for it to deliver its excellent sound potential.
All in all this is a nice system, and I recommend it.

Hunting for exciting, dynamic surround sound on a budget? You've landed at the right system. It's no mirage: Yamaha's affordable YHT-150 includes the 5-piece NS-AP1500 speaker ensemble, a YST-SW010 subwoofer, and Yamaha's HTR-5730 home theater receiver, which pumps 100 watts per channel x 6 discrete channels (at 1 kHz) and offers a host of options for rendering the type of surround sound best suited to your taste or programming. The powerful HTR-5730 receiver accepts the DVD player's Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS 5.1-channel surround signals and routes each channel to its designated speaker. Additionally, the receiver's Silent Cinema and Night Listening modes enhance headphone and low-level listening, respectively, while Yamaha's 32-bit Cinema-DSP processing gives you an additional 24 surround effects to enhance your movies and music. With the HTR-5730's 5.1-channel analog inputs, you're ready for high-resolution DVD-Audio/SACD playback, too, whether from your current disc player(s) or from any future devices to which you might upgrade. The receiver offers a total of 4 AV inputs, and its tuner section offers 40-station AM/FM preset tuning. The 6-speaker complement includes the 5-speaker NS-AP1500 for the front, center, and surround speakers and Yamaha's YST-SW010 subwoofer for deep bass, which is important for effective home theater sound. Each speaker in the NS-AP1500 ensemble uses a sealed, acoustic-suspension design with dual 2.5-inch pulp-cone woofers. The center speaker is specially configured for TV placement and--as it handles upwards of 70 percent of a movie's audio, including most voices--it's engineered for slightly more full-bodied sound than the other speakers. The 100-watt, 6.5-inch subwoofer uses a spruce-cone driver and Yamaha's patented Advanced Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST), generating incredible bass from its small enclosure. Advanced YST uses negative-impedance feedback in the amp and a Helmholtz resonator in the speaker to provide strong and accurate bass.QD-Bass (Quatre Dispersion Bass) technology uses a down-firing driver with square, pyramid-shaped reflective plates to radiate sound with equal effectiveness in all directions. The sub's individual volume control permits the perfect matching of the sub's output to the overall volume of the system. The sub has a signal-sensing circuit, too. When it detects an audio signal, it powers right up. When it senses no signal for several minutes, it shuts itself off.All speakers included with the YHT-150 feature magnetic shielding, so they can be placed near a TV or monitor and cause no picture degradation. What's in the Box Surround amplifier, 5 speakers, a powered subwoofer, a remote control, remote batteries, a user's manual, all requisite cabling.

Energy S-10.3 800-Watt 10-Inch Subwoofer (Black) Review

Energy S-10.3 800-Watt 10-Inch Subwoofer (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the take 5 speakers, and was debating between the 8" or 10" sub, I decided to go with the 10". I have had a lot of audio equipment over the years, and I really enjoy a nice clean "thumping" bass, and this unit delivers, with plenty to spare.
My only complaint is, this unit has a real nice blue light that comes on when activated, and they are notorious for blowing out, usually in less than a week. This doesn't affect the performance in any way, just no light. Now if you have five minutes to spare, and can use a screwdriver, you can replace this bulb for roughly $1. The catch is, you kill your warranty if you do. Energy customer service wants you to ship the unit back to them, to the tune of between $20-$30, (it is a heavy piece). depending on where you live, where they will replace the bulb, under warranty, and ship the unit back to you, with roughly a 2-3 week wait.
Makes absolutely no sense, and the reason for four stars, but if you don't mind living without the light, (it will blow) it is one nice sub, that can handle just about anything you can throw at it, even at high levels, without breaking up.

Infinity Powered 12IN Subwoofer 400 Watt Review

Infinity Powered 12IN Subwoofer 400 Watt
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this subwoofer in 2007, and it died a year later, nearly to the day. I blame myself, really - when I was thinking about buying it, I read reviews, just about all of which said that it had excellent sound. That was true. What I didn't read at the time was all the complaints. Turns out that the PS12 and PS10 amplifier modules are notorious for failing around a year after first turn-on. In my case, I pulled the screws and yanked the amplifier module. Soot is everywhere. I honestly can't see exactly what failed, though it looks like an area under one of the inductors was involved in a flashover of some sort. In fact, about a one-square-inch chunk of circuit board is actually eaten away from this failure. Now, I'm handy with a soldering iron, but this is clearly unfixable, since a large area of the surface traces are destroyed. At least they had the sense to install an internal fuse - without that, this failure might have burned down my house. $300 for one year of use and the potential for a life-changing fire; you do the math. Anyway, I just bought a Cadence CSX-12 to replace this dog. Do your research, not just for audiophile reviews, but also for complaints!

Klipsch Synergy KSW12 12-inch 105-watt Powered Subwoofer Review

Klipsch Synergy KSW12 12-inch 105-watt Powered Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having heard this sub while back, I have to agree with the first reviewer. It's acceptable for HT use, but poor for music; regardless of their nonsense about dynamic power.
Although, movies may get away with "large, short-term peaks of power", many music will demand nearly constant, power. In virtually all movies, special effects and sound tracks last only a few seconds; all most all of it is a dialog between the actors. Certainly, there is no bass in dialogs. Music is different. I mean, how often do you hear a couple note of bass, followed by few more notes several minutes later?
I'm not sure where some of the reviewers get their information, but there is no such thing as a "crisp & sharp" bass. Crisp & sharp implies, fast rise time, which means there are significant higher harmonic(high frequency) contents in the sound. Anyone who understand the concept of harmonics and Fourier series should understand this. The "crisp & sharp" part of the "bass" comes from the satellites. The most common reason why some bass sounds muddy/boomy is because of poor integration between the satellites and the sub or due to the standing waves caused by the sub-room interaction.
I also don't get how anyone can get "imaging" from a mono sub. Even if you use two subs, low frequency sounds are difficult to localize. This is the very reason why you can place the subs significant distance from the satellites.
The rattling of the object in the room has EVERYTHING to do with the bass, regardless of the distortion. Obviously, the reviewer has never experienced the room pressurized by two 15" subs driven by 1000+ watt pro-audio amplifier. You can barely hear it, but you will definitely feel it. If you have never heard/felt a real sub, then you really don't have a good reference point to judge the other subs. All you can do is note the significant improvement KSW-12 made over the original 8-inch "sub".
That being said, the KSW-12's low end of the frequency response is bit lacking for an "almost-high end sub". It seemed to struggle with the loud rap, as well as the classical music. For movies, it wasn't as bad. It handled most action scenes well, but combat scenes with exaggerated explosions, the sub clearly ran out of gas.
Objectively, the specs are some what misleading. Why would anyone spec the subs at 1/8-space? I've seen half and 1/4-space specs, but 1/8-space? Also, how dynamic is the "dynamic power"? This sounds too much like my plastic 2" 100 watt(PMPO) multimedia speakers I had back in college.
In short, KSW-12 has respectable volume, but is unsuitable for continuous music with significant bass content. It also doesn't have the low end impact. It's spec are completely unrealistic and you won't get anything near the listed spec in a typical living/family room playing music, or movies with heavy action sequences. In the end, it's only a bit better than a typical consumer level 12" sub.

REVIEW: Complete a powerful home theater system with the deep, driving bass of the Klipsch KSW-12 powered subwoofer--perfect for combing with high-performance Klipsch Synergy Series surround sound configurations. It couples a 12-inch driver to the floor for optimal performance. This subwoofer's high-output, down-firing design "grips" the air and fills a room with low frequency energy that's heard and felt with undetectable distortion. The built-in discrete MOSFET amplifier and 12-inch fiber-composite woofer are as efficient as they are reliable. It provides 105 watts of FTC-rated continuous power, and it has a dynamic power rating of 440 watts. (Dynamic power indicates the actual power this amplifier will deliver to the woofer under normal operating conditions.)
The woofer is composed of a Santoprene rubber surround with a fiber composite cone which enables Klipsch subwoofers to deliver on their promise of extended bass response and maximum reliability. This subwoofer accepts LFE, line-level, and speaker level inputs, making it easy to add to the Quintet Microsystem, the Synergy System 6, or any other Klipsch inspired arrangement. The KSW-12's jet ash veneer vinyl finish creates a deceivingly subtle exterior for its earthshaking sound capabilities.

I picked up a pair of these at a local hi-fi shop during a big sale for a bit under a grand. They were the floor demo pair, but on inspection, looked perfect. The review reflects that these speakers had adequate burn in since they had been used for demo purposes before my purchase.
In short, great deal for the money. Monster bass that's adjustable (important!) due to the 300 watt powered sub in the side of each speaker. DefTech also uses dual passive radiators, helping the powered woofer to distribute more pressure in the room. Properly dialed in, the bass response is deep and full across the spectrum (no one note bass here!), and sacrifices in the area of bass control and immediacy. A bit sluggish, but tonally accurate and warm. I prefer depth of response in my casual listening over accuracy of timing. I have never been able to achieve both for less than a few thousand dollars, and there are few speakers at that price point which do. Gallo Reference 3.1s and Von Schweikert VR4-JRs come to mind as exceptional examples, but at a minimum of 3 times the price!
The bipolar nature of the speaker makes for lots of arguments. :-/ Anyhoo, it also makes them sound big, really big which is a positive in my book. You sacrifice the last word (ok, maybe the last 2 or 3 words...) in clarity, precision, and ultimate soundstage accuracy. But you're rewarded with a forgiving sound that has thud, slam and sizzle. Especially with the volume up.
I was in search of a full range speaker for less than a grand. Not an easy situation to resolve... I was wary of Def Tech as many audiophiles poopoo the brand, but I have to say I'm very impressed. 4 solid stars.
System:
Mac Mini / PS3 -->
Rotel RB-1050 -->
Definitive Technologies BP7006
Cons:
Not as good as-
Avantgarde DUO - ~$25,000
Wilson Watt/Puppy - $30,000
Gallo Reference 3.1 with Gallo Subwoofer Amp - ~$4000
and others, but none that I've found for less than 4K...

This is a great sub. It has a good size enclosure for a 12 inch driver and feels quite solid. No noticeable resonances when you rap on the unit. Can be converted for either down firing or forward firing operation for use in a cabinet as my installation requires. Despite this necessary poor placement it fills my rather large theater room with strong base. The "list price" of $799 on amazon is wrong though. Polks own web site shows it as $679.95 which is the supposedly discounted price on amazon.

Mirage MM-6 miniature High-Performance Subwoofer (Black) Review

Mirage MM-6 miniature High-Performance Subwoofer (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Until recently the speakers on our Pioneer Elite plasma were rarely used since all the audio is sourced through a Bose Lifestyle receiver. However, we recently added a new Home Threatre PC to the mix - mainly to get access to the many internet streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu etc and to play foreign region DVDs and Blu Rays. The PC is connected via HDMI and hence both video and audio are sent to the TV (we could have configured the audio to be routed through the Bose system as well but it would have required an extra cable and we were maxed out with the number of components that are attached to the Bose (so we would have to disconnect one in any case). Also, there was the hassle of turning on another device - our Sony HTPC turns on and controls the Pioneer TV just like it was a monitor. The inbuilt HDMI control turns on the TV automatically and turns it to the correct input when the PC is turned on and when the TV is turned off the PC also goes into hibernation. Everything worked perfectly except the audio from the TV's attacked speakers lacked substantial bass.
Another problem we had was that we live in a high rise condo and space is a premium so we didn't want a large sub. The Mirage MM6 was the best fit in terms of aesthetics and performance that we could find. The finish of the MM6 matches the TV perfectly. Also, the Pioneer Elite TVs already include a subwoofer connection that is active so all we needed to do was to plug in a cable from the sub out from the TV to the MM6.
The sound of the MM6 is very detailed and balanced and does not sound muddled or booming like a lot of cheaper subs. The difference to the overall audio quality is quite substantial to say the least. One way to tell is how the THX audio demo sounds (some Disney movies have them at the start).
Great aesthetics and performance. Set up was really easy and you can pretty much put these anywhere and still the sound is excellent.

If any mid-high range audio company does it right, it's Def Tech.
I bought these on 12/1/08 along with the Def Tech C/L/R 2300, plugged them in to my Yamaha HTR-5890 (130 watts per channel) and they sound INCREDIBLE. I bought them mainly for home theater, but i also listen to music, which sounds crystal clear.
The midrange and tweeter do an incredible job at capturing detailed sounds in movies that I never heard on my previous system. Voices from the center (which contains the exact same midrange, tweeter, and subwoofer that the 7006's do) sound like real voices; not someone talking in a tin can. The subwoofer picks up deep voices and other noises that any other center wouldn't. I highly recommend pairing the fronts and center for a real theater experience.
The 8" subwoofers produce very tight and accurate bass. I have the Sub Level knobs half way up and it is plenty loud. The only thing about the subs is they obviously don't hit the lows that a 10 or 12 can, but this is only noticeable when listening to rap music. For movies and other music, the subs are just perfect.
The speakers on the back of the bi-polar 7006's do a whole lot more than I thought they would. While listening to Every Word by Ercola (in 2 channel stereo) there were parts of the song where I thought my rears were on. I stood up and put my ear next to them, and they weren't. I have the fronts angled in so they are pointing at me while I'm on the couch, and in turn, the midrange and tweeter on the back of the speaker are angled out. This causes the sound to bounce off the front wall, then side walls, and eventually off the back walls. It really fills the whole room with sound, even in 2 channel stereo.
The 7006's are plenty loud and clear for my room (20'x15'). I am so satisfied with them that I don't see the need to upgrade (to the 7004's or 7002's) unless you have a bigger room. My next plan is to get a y-adapter along with two subwoofer cables to hook up the optional LFE jack. This will allow me to set a LFE cut off point on my receiver (and level), thus allowing me to control the bass even more so.
If you are looking in the price range, I suggest Def Tech. It truly creates an amazing home theater experience with life like room filling sound and accurate, tight bass.
EDIT: I have had these speakers for over a week now, and they keep sounding better and better every day. Most high end speakers such as these require a "break-in" period, anywhere between 40 and 60 hours of modest play time. The most noticeable change is definitely in the subwoofers. They are hitting deeper and cleaner than when I first got them. I will keep you updated when I hook up the LFE channel.

JBL Balboa SUB 10 - 10-Inch Powered Subwoofer Review

JBL Balboa SUB 10 - 10-Inch Powered Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this subwoofer to replace an old subwoofer from a HTIB (Home Theater In a Box) system. I chose this particular subwoofer first because of the brand and second because of the price. I have used JBL products for years (Home, Car, and Professional) and have always been very pleased with their performance. This one is no different.
When it arrived, I was quite surprised at it's size. It is much bigger than I expected for a single 10" subwoofer but still comfortably fits in next to my entertainment center.
As for the sound, I would consider this subwoofer very good but not great. It has much better low end extension than your typical HTIB subwoofer but it's not going to shake the ground. I have never been fond of 10" low frequency drivers and this one isn't going to change my view of them. For some reason, I always find 10" drivers to be more "muddy" sounding than a 12" or even an 8" driver. However, when the next step up (12") costs three times what this one does, I can certainly make an exception. That said, this subwoofer does sound good and has no trouble filling my entire living room with good solid bass.
The features on this subwoofer are also very good. It has speaker level and line level stereo inputs as well as a separate line level LFE input for feeding from a Home Theater receiver. One thing to note, the manual says that the LFE input will bypass the crossover setting. This is actually preferable since the crossover function should be handled by your receiver so that the sub picks up where the main speakers drop off and there is no or very little frequency overlap.
One thing to be cautious of is the power that this thing has. 100w RMS/225w Peak may not sound like much but it is more than enough to fill your average living room/den or to upset your neighbors if you live in an apartment.
All in all, this is an excellent choice for the price and I am very pleased with it.

Klipsch Synergy SUB-10 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black) Review

Klipsch Synergy SUB-10 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black)

I hooked this SW up too my Yamaha tuner and Klipsch Quintet II speakers. The first thing I watched was Apocalypse Now due to the phenominal 5.1 sound. The subwoofer is tremendous. You can have it as loud or as subtle as you want and it doesnt distort. Hook up was a breeze via a single "SW cable" (not supplied). I'm not a tech head but I had no problems putting it all together.
The sub has its own power supply which is an absolute must have from a power set up standpoint.
Just a side note.... all these components are only as good as the bit in the middle (the tuner) and the amount of power that it can push to the individual parts. Once you have it all set right this sub will last you a long long long time before you outgrow it.
I WOULD buy this product again if I had too.

Klipsch Synergy SUB-12 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black) Review

Klipsch Synergy SUB-12 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black)

I recently replaced a Polk Audio PSW-12 with the Synergy. This is an amazing upgrade. It mixes well with the Polk RTi-8 Fronts, and CSi-3 Center, R15 surround and Infinity Primus 250 Back Surround. All of these speakers are powered by an Onkyo 803.
The previous sub had good bass response, but was very directional. What I mean by that is I could hear the bass coming from the sub. It did not fill the room. The Synergy fills the room, and actually makes the bass sound like it is coming from the individual speakers. If you increase the gain, it will shake the house.
Installation was very simple. I used the LFE connection, and plugged it in to power. It also has an automatic power save mode, and a light on the front to let you know what mode it is in. Over all, a great value!

Cerwin Vega Pro CVA-115X 15-Inch Activeseries High Performance Subwoofer Review

Cerwin Vega Pro CVA-115X 15-Inch Activeseries High Performance Subwoofer
Average Reviews:

I purchased this sub based on cerwin vega's great reputation and it turned out to be a great decision. bass is deep and beefy just like any CV sub and matches my style of play. i dj weddings and other mobile events that range from as little as 50 guests all the way up to about 250 and this sub realy helps (i typically have 2 mackie SRM450 tops with this sub). im saving now to get a second one for some added reinforcement with the bigger parties. one sub is great for mid size parties but when you pass 100-125 guests it would be nice to have the second one there for added effect. you cant go wrong with this sub! another plus is the size and weight... its nice and compact which i like since im sometimes limited on space and its not that heavy to carry on/off the van to the cart i use.

NHT SubOne 250 Watt, 10" Subwoofer (Single Speaker) Review

NHT SubOne 250 Watt, 10 Subwoofer (Single Speaker)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered a subone online and it arrived with a terrible 60cycle hum. I exchanged it, and the second one had very audible distortion/resonance from the speaker surround at most frequencies. NHT said it needed to be replaced, so I got my money back, and bought the Sunfire True Junior -- a really good sub at the same price. I also bought the True from a local high end dealer where I did not have to worry about arguing about returns and Fedex pickups.
