I picked up a pair of these at a local hi-fi shop during a big sale for a bit under a grand. They were the floor demo pair, but on inspection, looked perfect. The review reflects that these speakers had adequate burn in since they had been used for demo purposes before my purchase.
In short, great deal for the money. Monster bass that's adjustable (important!) due to the 300 watt powered sub in the side of each speaker. DefTech also uses dual passive radiators, helping the powered woofer to distribute more pressure in the room. Properly dialed in, the bass response is deep and full across the spectrum (no one note bass here!), and sacrifices in the area of bass control and immediacy. A bit sluggish, but tonally accurate and warm. I prefer depth of response in my casual listening over accuracy of timing. I have never been able to achieve both for less than a few thousand dollars, and there are few speakers at that price point which do. Gallo Reference 3.1s and Von Schweikert VR4-JRs come to mind as exceptional examples, but at a minimum of 3 times the price!
The bipolar nature of the speaker makes for lots of arguments. :-/ Anyhoo, it also makes them sound big, really big which is a positive in my book. You sacrifice the last word (ok, maybe the last 2 or 3 words...) in clarity, precision, and ultimate soundstage accuracy. But you're rewarded with a forgiving sound that has thud, slam and sizzle. Especially with the volume up.
I was in search of a full range speaker for less than a grand. Not an easy situation to resolve... I was wary of Def Tech as many audiophiles poopoo the brand, but I have to say I'm very impressed. 4 solid stars.
System:
Mac Mini / PS3 -->
Rotel RB-1050 -->
Definitive Technologies BP7006
Cons:
Not as good as-
Avantgarde DUO - ~$25,000
Wilson Watt/Puppy - $30,000
Gallo Reference 3.1 with Gallo Subwoofer Amp - ~$4000
and others, but none that I've found for less than 4K...

If any mid-high range audio company does it right, it's Def Tech.
I bought these on 12/1/08 along with the Def Tech C/L/R 2300, plugged them in to my Yamaha HTR-5890 (130 watts per channel) and they sound INCREDIBLE. I bought them mainly for home theater, but i also listen to music, which sounds crystal clear.
The midrange and tweeter do an incredible job at capturing detailed sounds in movies that I never heard on my previous system. Voices from the center (which contains the exact same midrange, tweeter, and subwoofer that the 7006's do) sound like real voices; not someone talking in a tin can. The subwoofer picks up deep voices and other noises that any other center wouldn't. I highly recommend pairing the fronts and center for a real theater experience.
The 8" subwoofers produce very tight and accurate bass. I have the Sub Level knobs half way up and it is plenty loud. The only thing about the subs is they obviously don't hit the lows that a 10 or 12 can, but this is only noticeable when listening to rap music. For movies and other music, the subs are just perfect.
The speakers on the back of the bi-polar 7006's do a whole lot more than I thought they would. While listening to Every Word by Ercola (in 2 channel stereo) there were parts of the song where I thought my rears were on. I stood up and put my ear next to them, and they weren't. I have the fronts angled in so they are pointing at me while I'm on the couch, and in turn, the midrange and tweeter on the back of the speaker are angled out. This causes the sound to bounce off the front wall, then side walls, and eventually off the back walls. It really fills the whole room with sound, even in 2 channel stereo.
The 7006's are plenty loud and clear for my room (20'x15'). I am so satisfied with them that I don't see the need to upgrade (to the 7004's or 7002's) unless you have a bigger room. My next plan is to get a y-adapter along with two subwoofer cables to hook up the optional LFE jack. This will allow me to set a LFE cut off point on my receiver (and level), thus allowing me to control the bass even more so.
If you are looking in the price range, I suggest Def Tech. It truly creates an amazing home theater experience with life like room filling sound and accurate, tight bass.
EDIT: I have had these speakers for over a week now, and they keep sounding better and better every day. Most high end speakers such as these require a "break-in" period, anywhere between 40 and 60 hours of modest play time. The most noticeable change is definitely in the subwoofers. They are hitting deeper and cleaner than when I first got them. I will keep you updated when I hook up the LFE channel.

The 8" subwoofer produces very tight and accurate bass. I have the Sub Level knob half way up and it is plenty loud. The 7006's produce the majority of the bass for movies and music, but the center just adds more bass that really fills the room with clear sound.
I have not hooked up the LFE port to my receiver yet as I plan to do so on my two fronts.
If you are looking in the price range, I suggest Def Tech. It truly creates an amazing home theater experience with life like room filling sound and accurate, tight bass.

Definitive has always led the industry with the best-sounding shielded center channels available. Optimum surround sound home theater reproduction places heavy demands on the center channel speaker, which in many respects is the main speaker in the system and often handles 50% or more of the program material. It is no place to compromise and settle for second best. Because of this, Definitive pioneered the concept of full frequency range high-definition center-channel speakers. Definitive's center channels and C/L/Rs are consistently rated as the best available, and have won numerous Audio Video Grand Prix Center Channel of the Year Awards each and every year.

I own four Mythos STS's,2 Mythos Gem XL's and a Mythos Ten. Which all combined puts out very very powerful and forceful amounts of bass and excellent sound quality. But I decided to get 2 of these behemoths and they are like a sleeping giants one minute they are asleep and the next they send a shock wave like a bomblast through me and my house. For music they are pretty good I give them a 7 out of 10 but for movies and video games that is where they really excel for movies and games I give them a 10 out of 10 they are unbelievable especially Blu Rays or HD DVDs. Movies and games really reach subterranean depths they can put out bass so low you can't hear a thing but you feel them shaking the earth and resonating through your body and pressurizing the entire house they truly put out more bass than anything I have felt in theaters. Sometimes the bass feels as if I am in a river stream with fast moving water all around me but it is not uncomfortable. Normally I just have the both of them at 50% gain and that is more than enough. Someone asked me why so much power and bass because with my 4 Mythos STS's and there built in amps along with my 2 Super cubes I have a total of 4,800 watts of subs, but I think it is better to have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it lol. But it is not all about just bass and power and volume it is about sound quality and being able to integrate them into you sound system with out overpowering the other speakers. I have had no issues doing just that. If you want to see pics of my HT setup and many many others go to "B l u r a y . c o m" my profile is Alpha Sixx.

I have had this sub for a few weeks now and I couldn't be happier with it. We have a very large great room with 18' ceilings and it fills the room with thunderous bass effortlessly. It has no problem putting out low rumbling bass found on movie soundtracks but what is most impressive is how much 'punch' it has when playing music...it is very tight. And like another reviewer noted, your wife will love how small it is. (I was forced to displace my old towers to the basement a few years ago...)
UPDATE:
Months after this purchase I am still very satisfied. It is simply a great sub. I got a laugh the other day when I was going through the manual. The Definitive engineers actually suggest TWO of these things for your system- one for each side. It was then clear to me that Definitive Technology engineers do not have wives or neighbors, nor do they live near any fault lines. I cannot imagine two of these subs in your living room...

Bought this subwoofer as part of a replacement set to replace my Bose Acoustimass 10 set. Even though it sports a 10" woofer, it is relatively small in size than I expected. It has a Low Frequency Effect (LFE) in as well as line level inputs in case your receiver does not have a LFE out. There is a power on and off switch on the back and the power cord detaches from the unit making storage and transport easier. Included is a variable crossover selector on the back as well. On the side is a rotary volume knob (placement may be a problem if you place your sub in a tight corner or location). The design of this subwoofer is great, nothing fancy that draws attention in you home decor. It is an acoustic suspension system with a passive radiator which works in tandem with woofer.
The audio sound is great! Tight, precise, and will provided that sonic vibration associated with a theater experience. It also blends seamlessly with the Pro 800 speakers and pro 1000 center speaker I purchased in conjunction with this sub. Overall I am very satisfied with this subwoofer and I think this far exceeds my old Bose Acoustimass 10 series in audio fidelity.
Pros:
- Compact
- Flexible input
- Great audio fidelity
- Seamless audio spectrum
- Variable selectable crossover
- Plenty of continuous power (RMS)
- Nice Design
Cons:
- Location of the volume knob can be a pain depending on sub location
- Would like to have status LED on front for easy visual reference
- Feet stick out from the finished edge (sides)
