Kenwood DDX7017 DVD/CD player with 6.5" video screen Review

Kenwood DDX7017 DVD/CD player with 6.5 video screen
Average Reviews:

I will start by saying that overall I enjoy this radio. I would have enjoyed it more if it was a little cheaper but the touch screen function is cool. Ok here are some cons, when the radio is cold, outside temp less than 30, it will make a loud grinding noise, I think its coming from the cd carriage, until it warms up. Annoying. Second there is only a choice of 5 backround displays and they all stink. 200 dollard lcd decks have more backrounds than that ie. dolphins, cars, nature, ect. There is no internal hard drive which stinks when you want to add navigation because you need to have the additional dvd player under the seat with the navigation unit. Movie quality is good but between the hours of 11am and 3pm there is no way you will be able to see the screen, it is very dim in direct sunlight, almost completely unusable. Sound quality is great so if you are building a loud system this is a good choice. Over all I would have to give this item a 3 and recommend you go with the a touch screen deck with built in navigation.
pro: sound, touch screen, looks, and ability to connect external video equipment ie. xbox
cons: cd noise when cold, no hardrive, lack of graphics, dim lit display in the daytime, difficult to use navigation.

Eclipse AVN2210p CD receiver Review

Eclipse AVN2210p CD receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start off by saying that I value quality reviews ssoooo much and I will not purchase a product without extensive research. That being said, I also will not write a review unless it really "wows" me. This radio went above and beyond my "wow" factor.
I wish there was a button for something higher than 5 stars because that is what it deserves. It is so incredible that it shocks me to come on to amazon.com and not see 100+ reviews for this item.
Let me get the negatives out of the way so I can rave about the positives. There are two negatives and one could partially be due to me configuration in my car, but it was not that easy to install. I had the same issue with another aftermarket radio so I am guessing my 2002 Nissan Altima is a very picky car and not kind to me when I ask it to accept a new unit. The other "negative" is that the TomTom Duo seems to have a cold because there is a glitch that keeps making it reset instead of shut down when I turn off the ignition. I read a lot of info on a forum and figured out that apparently V 6.550 is a good version and the update 6.553 which is what I have has some glitch in the data which sits on the SD card that comes with the TomTom. My recommendation is to STAY WITH v 6.550 if yours comes with it. I am trying to get 6.550 so the glitch goes away. Check out [...] ...tons of information regarding this problem. It honestly is not that big of a deal because all you need to do is remove the SD card from the unit and power off the device so I could careless and don't really consider it a negative.
Now on to the positives. Where to start? The sound quality is incredible. Very clear, no distortions, and you have the option of adjusting the bass, mid, and treble. Obviously your in-car speakers are going to help produce that great quality of sound, but I just switched out my JVC HDR-1 and let me say there is a world of difference between the two (with the same speakers). I do have a Bose system so keep that in mind, but comparing apples with apples I am astonished how much better the Eclipse does with producing perfect clarity. Secondly is the USB. For people adamant like me for wanting a front USB port to plug in a non-iPod device, you know that there is only about 4 or 5 units that come with one in the front. I prefer USB over auxillary because it is a direct connect and you are going to acheive better sound quality from your unit that way. Well Eclipse does it again with the wow factor because it picks up all my songs from the device and displays it on a nice 3.5" TomTom screen. I can choose artist and then see all my music right on there. Oh and btw you have to be very careful with choosing a unit that has a nice touchscreen because I have tried some other units that require me tapping like crazy to move to the next page. The TomTom is very responsive and I can fly through the menus. Next on the list is bluetooth handsfree...if you are looking for a wow factor then you will experience it right here. It is very loud, very clear, and the microphone picks up anyone in the car. Talk about incredible. It syncs so easily and required no effort to dial and talk. Only problem was it said it synced my phonebook but it didn't. This is really surprising because I have a Verizon Wireless EnV and I know Verizon has cripple bluetooth so I am sure the TomTom is going nuts trying to sync it to begin with. In any event the Bluetooth works amazingly and you will wonder why you never had it in your car. Here is a tip to you buyers...the volume control for both the navigation and the Bluetooth calling is on the TomTom itself...not the scroll wheel. If you are on the map screen simply tap the bottom left and the volume control pops up.
This device is when the phrase "different strokes for different folks" comes into play. There are some audiophiles that want a million adjustment options from a Pioneer system so they can fine tune every single decibel. This device was made for the everyday consumer. The reason why iPod is the hottest selling mp3 player is not because of sound quality (because every single website agrees Cowon and Creative win that battle), but because they are just so easy to use with one scroll wheel. Well that is what you can easily tell Eclipse and TomTom tried effortlessly to accomplish. It is INCREDIBLY EASY TO USE! The buttons are self explanatory and big to press quickly, switching between USB, radio, and navigation is extremely simple, and the quality right off that bat is almost perfect so all you need are the bass, mid, and treble controls to fine tune it. This is what I call a design masterpiece. Eclipse and TomTom I bet got together and said "let's make a device that is so easy a caveman could do it." When you are on the road you don't want to squint at the screen or fiddle with the nobs...you want to just enjoy your music and drive safely. Mission accomplished. Also think about how extremely well this was designed that they made it undockable so you can safely take your TomTom with you and not worry about a break-in. You can even take your TomTom to your computer and update it whenver you want. This device should be under anyone's Christmas tree. I could go on forever about this device because I am still shocked and in utter glee, but until you install one for yourself, you won't appreciate it. I never reviewed my JVC HDR-1 because it was "ok" but not thrilling and I had nothing to be excited about. This puppy will be staying with me for as long as I have this car and most likely my next. I finally feel like the $500 I paid for it was worth it! Fantastic work Eclipse/TomTom...you have outdone yourselves.
Ed

Alpine IVA D310 - DVD player with LCD monitor and AM/FM tuner Review

Alpine IVA D310 - DVD player with LCD monitor and AM/FM tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Good unit with great sound. Great with radio and CDs. But the main reason I got it was to use it with my iPod. This is where this item falls flat. First off, you have to buy an adapter (KCA-420i) just to get the iPod controls to the head unit.
Once you've done that, you'll find out (I did the hard way) that the data transfer b/w the iPod and deck is ungodly slow. Not music wise, but music info wise. It's extremely sluggish scrolling through songs/artists/albums. So I've basically been playing it on shuffle.
But now and then, you feel like listening to a specific song/album. You can do that with this deck, but be prepared to take time to scroll to the item.
I will be switching this deck for the IVA-D106 which is much faster.
Cheers.

Kenwood DNX6140 6.1-Inch Wide Double-DIN In-Dash Nagivation with Built-in Bluetooth USB/iPod Direct Control/DVD Receiver Review

Kenwood DNX6140 6.1-Inch Wide Double-DIN In-Dash Nagivation with Built-in Bluetooth USB/iPod Direct Control/DVD Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had this unit profesionally installed in my Porsche Cayman and the custom installation is a very good fit. The navigation system is very easy to use - if you've had a garmin (that is what it is based on), you pretty much do not need to read the manual - it is very intuitive and accurate. I've driven about 2000 miles with it and I like the large bright display - it is easy to change directions and detour on the fly. It does not have voice commands, but the touch screen is easy to use.
I have also used the bluetooth with my Razr phone and have not encountered the problems stated in the earlier review. The microphone is placed near the rearview mirror and only the front speakers come on when I'm talking on the phone - the unit shuts off any music that you might have playing. I use the touchscreen to dial a number and it works well - the folks at the receiving end have no problem hearing me.
There is also an ipod adapter that is in the glove compartment - once hooked up all controls are on the touchscreen - it is easy to use and works well. If one puts in a DVD / CD that takes precedence over the ipod unless you instruct the unit otherwise. I leave the unit to power up when starting the car and it automatically shuts off when the engine is off. I haven't used the XM stations as I do not subscribe to that service but the FM stations pull in fine using the standard antenna that came with the car.
All in all this is a very good unit and I am very happy with it.

Kenwood DNX7120 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor, digital player and radio Review

Kenwood DNX7120 - Navigation system with DVD player, LCD monitor, digital player and radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK, my wife got a new car with the Honda Nav system, which has consolidated the tuner, CD changer, XM radio, bluetooth, and GPS with a nice size screen (about 7") and I immediately fell in love with it. Only, it's her car. So when I traded in my car for a new one, I started thinking about getting my own setup.
Enter the Kenwood DNX7120. It does not have all the features I wanted, specifically it was lacking satellite radio and bluetooth, but they are available as optional add-on components. With the add-ons, everything appears and functions as one consolidated unit. Great! The price is decent enough, the unit that is closer to being fully consolidated is priced at slightly over $1500 at this time, while this unit is just slightly over $900. The add-on componenents are roughly $200 extra, so the cost savings seemed to justify going this route.
Quality: from my perspective, great. The unit takes maybe 30 seconds to boot into a usable screen, but while it is booting up it automatically starts playing whatever you left it at. So if you were last listing to FM radio, about 5 - 10 seconds after you start you will at least have music. Sound is great, although my car is not an audiophile's high-end, but I enjoy it. The unit has a large number of potential interfaces, to include USB, I-pod, and A/V RCA connectors. Video display is nice and sharp. Favorites seems to be limited to 6 of each area (FM, XM), but that limitation might be because I haven't fully read the manuals yet. (I'd like to have more than 6 XM favorites).
This unit comes with a remote. The remote has a lot of buttons making it more complex than I care for, so I can't see myself using it while I drive. But maybe your passenger will want to use it.
Drawback: lack of data interfaces. The built-in Garmin would have a good source of updates if it had an SD card reader, but it doesn't. The manual says that updates are either through the SD or the DVD player, so I guess I'm stuck with ordering a DVD when it's time to update. I'll try the USB, but I had read another review that said the USB won't update the Garmin's database.
GPS: It's Garmin (love it or not). I love my portable Garmin Nuvi, and this acts very similar to it, so I feel comfortable with the nav programming. One bad thing (maybe should have put under drawbacks), if I'm running the GPS for a route and the phone rings and I take it, the GPS will not be displayed at all during the phone call. So either you're on a stretch of road that you won't miss a turn, or you'd better make the call short.
Last thoughts: This particular model is now, I believe, out of production and superceded by the DNX 81xx series. So obviously prices will be going down. If you can get this unit at $700 or under, it will be an exceptional bargain. It's still a good deal at current prices. Get all your optional components at one time and install everything together. You probably won't want to take it apart later just to add an add-on component.
UPDATE: After using this for a few days, reading the manual, and playing around with it, I have found that you can talk via bluetooth and still watch the GPS map. The unit will not automatically revert back to your screen, but all you have to do is press the NAV button and you will get the map back. So at this point, I wish I had given it 5 stars, but it seems that you cannot edit your initial star rating.

I researched the best Double DIN units for a couple of weeks. There isn't much on the web about this unit and where there is there is 1 review that says it's great to 1 review that says it's horrible. This unit was more available for me to get my hands on locally then any other. I played with the pioneer a bit and was fairly satisfied with it's interface. The clarion's review on the web was terrible so i don't even bother. So basically it was either the pioneer (forget the model but it's the one with all the bells and whistles that compare to this unit) or this kenwood.
The pioneer installer actually told me that they wouldn't/couldn't install the unit in my '07 vette. Said it was just too difficult and couldn't be done. These people have installed all my alarms/radios/speakers etc for 15 years now and i trust their opinion. However, i read a couple step by step forum posts that showed it be done. Instead of arguing and trying to talk them into it i went to another installer.
The second installer had the kenwood (8120 and 7120) with some other cheaper non-options for me (Dual and some other manufacturer). The kenwood had the built in bluetooth which was a huge plus for me. I'm very very skeptical of bluetooth units in any car. I have had many and have yet to find one that was sufficient to replace me having to hold the phone to my ear. The fact that this was built in gave me hope as all others are add-ons.
Many reviews said the kenwood interface is bad. I don't see why. It is plainly laid out and functional. I think it just has so many options (bells and whistles) that there are many nav keys to get into them it confuses people. It seems pretty good IMO. Could be flashier but i haven't gotten into all the custom skins etc that can be added so maybe it is.
I added the IPOD and Sirius accessories. They work great. The sirius has a better connection then my sirius handheld stiletto which isn't saying much but worth noting. The IPOD connection works good and clean sound. The interface is kind of bulky but when you're used to the iphone's simple interface what isn't going to be bulky compared to it? (Bulky = boring/simple not alot of features)
So everything works great except for the one thing that i knew probably wouldn't before i ever purchased it. The bluetooth phone. Everybody i've talked to on the other end said it sounded choppy and/or had static. I could hear them just fine and the voice dial seems to work ok. However, none of that matters if the other person can't hear you :P I will prob keep the phone to my ear.
Oh, the NAV works great. I've used several nav systems on phones and in rental cars and OEM version's and this is wonderful. It auto updates the routes instantly and doesn't yell at me for not following it's orders. It adapts rather than freaking out. So far so good.
Bottom line -- I would look at the pioneer a little harder if i went back through the purchase process but i doubt it's BT is any better and i don't like it's nav maps. However, for me, if the BT is better i'd swap in a heartbeat. The BT is very important to me though.

I bought and installed this head unit; it took 14 hours with all the cables, accessories, and removal of vehicle parts (seats, consoles, etc). Overall, the unit works well in all but one aspect. I have a rearview camera, gps, bluetooth, usb thumb, apple ipod, amp, and of course quality speakers connected. The only issue I have is with the BT100 I connected to it. Not sure though if it is the BT100, the interface with the 719, or just my cellphone compatability. It does take some patience getting all other accessories to interface correctly, and I wouldn't say the manual is great.
The screen is very good including the tilt feature and if you have a steady hand, you can use the little silver circular button controller. The remote is a plus too as it does many things; if you can remember all functions. A good compromise to higher end head units, and it fits all in 1-DIN with a removable faceplate.

Pros: Garmin Navigation, DVD, IPOD Connectivity(however you need the Kenwood adapter $30 to have full functionality), Back up camera (separately about $200), Excellent Sound

Bottom Line: It really is an impressive unit, Picture quality is good with DVD's and IPOD Videos. Touch Screen is responsive and GPS is Amazing!!!
The GPS is super accurate, shows the speed limit, your speed, arrival time, sets the clock automatically, and even changes time zones the second you cross the border!!
It is amazing, even changes speed limits exactly at the sign.

Martins wrote in his review "and all the streets are pre-programmed, any updates come straight from Garmin via satellite, " - thats NOT true. Software updates need to be downloaded from Garmins website and burned to a CD and copied over. Map updates are usually done yearly and must be purchased (for $140) from Garmin (or another authorized re-seller) - they are NOT free and are NOT sent straight from a satellite.
It doesn't change how good this radio is, but I just wanted to make sure no one was basing their purchase on an incorrect statement.

I ordered this item from Amazon. Once I had it professionally installed I was informed that it was a faulty radio because my Drivers side tweeter wouldn't work with it but would with other tested radios. I informed Amazon and they overnighted another radio to me and once it was installed I was very impressed. Looks great in a car with a double din. Plays DVD flawlessly! Touch screen is very responsive and many options etc!! My speakers are much louder and more clear now with this unit. Would recommend buying from Amazon before going to your audio shop where they would charge you much more!

The only way to experience the sonic impact of DVD movie soundtracks or music videos is through 24-bit processing. Clarions 24-bit D/A converter eliminates the signal defects of older 16 bit decoding by actually oversampling the digital signal. This greatly improves overall sound quality of the D/A converter, creating a more natural sound and better imaging.

Power Acoustik PAVN-7210 6.5-Inch Touch Screen In-Dash Navigation System with AM/FM Radio and DVD Player Review

Power Acoustik PAVN-7210 6.5-Inch Touch Screen In-Dash Navigation System with AM/FM Radio and DVD Player

I purchased my PAVN-7210 almost a year ago and I've been disappointed. It did not come with a user's manual, so I contacted the company and they emailed me a digital. I can not get the screen to auto-dim as is one of their advertised features. The lower half of the screen is darker than the top, making it hard to read the lower half. The equilizer feature is terrible. It has no clock on the radio display, although there is one on the Navteq GPS system - but if you are not using it, you do not have a clock where one is typically provided on most radios. It's not like there is no room. The display screen is quite large, but the use of it is pathetic and it is so boring. In a dark car, you can not see the radio buttons since they are not illuminated in any way. The eject button does not open the unit all the way to access the CD/DVD slot. You have to manually assist the unit to open and close. The CD unit does not work. I am currently trying to work with the company on this. My call to Power Acoustiks results in long phone waits for "the Tech" (I guess they only have one). So far, his suggestion to press the reset button has failed to fix the problem. I like the Navteq GPS alright, except that it is not integrated well with the radio. When the GPS unit is on, you can not use the preset radio stations as they are part of the radio screen and do not show up when the GPS is on. Also, the GPS interupts your music/talk stations when giving directions verbally. You can not turn off the verbals (you can mute them, but your radio music/talk will still mute-out when the GPS would be giving driving directions). Overall, this unit has been a disappointment and I would not recommend it. I doubt that I will ever purchase another Power Acoustik product after having this unit.

So i bought this deck awhile back, like last year, anyway its a great deck, you can hook RCA's up or wires for your speakers right out the back of the deck. anyway, its a really great deck, everything worked, and everything is very impressive, screen is huge, and fits perfectly in my car. Now ive read some other reviews and people are complaining that the DVD player and SD card reader dont work. TO THOSE PEOPLE< READ THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!. If you want that to work you have to go into the harness of the radio and install and ground the BLACK WIRE, to the ground, this wire is suppose to be installed to the handbreak so when it is pulled you can watch movies (its a safety option) you can by pass it by grounding it out. i really hate that this deck is very impressive but is getting horrible reveiws becuase of the dvd option, i will assure that the deck will work and be a perfect addition to your car. Message me with any questions, i could install these things for a living haha.

Power Acoustik's going huge with this receiver--the single-DIN unit boasts an 8.3-inch flip-up screen. Yes, you read that right: The company developed a new ultra-slim transport (only half an inch) and rotational mechanism to give you the big picture. It comes with two cages that will allow for hooded dash installs or a flusher install where no hooded dash exists. Enjoy a superb picture with 800 x 480 resolution, playback of your favorite media, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth technology, and then some. You can also add the optional NaviBox-1 for full NAVTEQ navigation.

Huge 8.3-Inch Screen The PTID-8310NRB boasts an 8.3-inch in-dash screen, for uncompromising entertainment. The motorized, LED-backlit LCD telescopes forward and backward with preset angles. It offers 800 x 480 pixel resolution with a 400 NIT brightness rating, for a picture to rival anything else out there. It's also a touchscreen, for quick and easy navigation of system features.
When not in use, the screen tucks safely away into the receiver, thanks to Power Acoustik's unique rotating mechanism. A standard DOT display picks up the slack when you're not using it.
Integrated Bluetooth Make hands-free calls or stream music with integrated Bluetooth technology. The PTID-8310NRB works with most Bluetooth-enabled cell phones, and it includes a built-in microphone.
A2DP profile support means you can stream audio from compatible devices directly to your stereo, with no cable needed.
Enjoy Your Media Play back your favorite discs with support for DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW, and VCD formats. You can also enjoy DivX and MP4 video, along with MP3/WMA audio (from disc, SD card, or USB devices).
Dial in the sound with custom or preset EQ settings, along with audio staging controls.
Prefer the radio? The PTID-8310NRB features an AM/FM radio with 18 FM and 12 AM presets, for instant recall of your favorite stations.
50W x 4 MOSFET Amplifier The built-in 50W x 4 amp provides plenty of output to start with; but for those who want a little more system, three sets of 4V preamp outputs (front, rear, sub) are included. Add some external amps for some chassis-shaking power.
Front-Panel Inputs You get plenty of input options with this receiver. Put your favorite media on SD cards or a USB thumb drive, and plug right into the slot/port on the front of the device.
There's also a standard 3.5-mm auxiliary input, so no matter what your device, chances are you can connect it.
Navigation-Ready Just add the optional NaviBox-1 (sold separately), and you'll have a full-featured NAVTEQ navigation system at your fingertips. Get realistic intersection views, turn-by-turn instructions, 2D and 3D map viewing, and plenty more.
Remote Included Control unit functions with the provided full-featured remote.
What's in the Box PTID-8310NRB receiver, Bluetooth microphone, remote control, wiring harness, and installation hardware.
