Cambridge Audio Sirocco Ultima SL70 Slimline Premium Floorstanders (Pair) Review

Cambridge Audio Sirocco Ultima SL70 Slimline Premium Floorstanders (Pair)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As far as I know, this is the first review of this Cambridge speaker pair anywhere (even though the box they came in looked like it had been around the world a couple of times, but thankfully with no damage inside). I bought on faith and specs. I did not audition the speakers (no time to find a dealer, then take on one of those creatures called a salesperson). I wanted a small, efficient floorstander, and this pair fills the bill very well.
A one-word description of these speakers could be CLEAN. They look clean, and they sound clean. The build quality is almost flawless. The sound is neutral but very detailed. I have DynAudios and a hybrid tube amplifier in my car and an older stereo setup in another residence (with amp and preamp/tuner and big old Klipsches), so I know clean when I hear it. In their own way, these speakers are as good as or better than my other equipment, even though they cost considerably less. They don't make me miss my other stuff. They have a black, shiny finish that is nicely done and should fit with any flat-screen TV. They look like they came with mine (and whew, my sweetheart actually likes the way they look, once she got used to the idea of 3-foot-tall speakers in the first place). The SL70s have dual connectors for bi-wiring, but they come with a removable metal bridge between the terminals that probably achieves much the same effect without the extra wires. They pair very well with my Marantz AV receiver.
SL70s do need a subwoofer unless you put them in a bathroom. With 3.5s, even three of them, I would have been very surprised if they hadn't. However, they do go down far enough and present so well that the transition between speaker and subwoofer is seamless, especially with classical music. This was not the case with the mediocre-in-every-category bookshelf speakers (that had glowing, mostly 5-star reviews on Amazon, BTW) that they replaced.
Other than the way they were shipped, the only cause for complaint with these speakers is that they came only with carpet spikes. I doubt it would be a good idea to use those on a hardwood floor, so I didn't.
All in all, though, I like these speakers. They look good, they sound good, and that makes them worth whatever I paid. So now, there's a review.

Yamaha RX-V861BL 7.1-Channel XM-Ready Home Theater Receiver Review

Yamaha RX-V861BL 7.1-Channel XM-Ready Home Theater Receiver

I have to say, I was a non-believer. I was debating between Harman-Kardon, Yamaha and Onkyo. I didnt think Yamaha was that great of a reciever than HK. But man, I was proved so wrong that I feel what I have been missing all along. Suddenly the Klipsh, Bose speakers are awake like crazy. I had a Technics before ( I know I was cheap...) but having the 861 made the whole experience like you are immersed in sound, the bass is deep, the distribution is awsome as the sound distribution is set by using the Yamaha mic which detects the errors, distance and adjusts the sound.. I can go on and on but try this out. I was not convinced that a receiver should be more than 500 bux but this monster is better than the Rolex I bought last month!!!!

JBL RHM 10 2-Way 10" Dual-Tweeter Shelf Monitor Review

JBL RHM 10 2-Way 10 Dual-Tweeter Shelf Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The speaker is quite large and a bit unconventional but its substantial size and heavy weight ensure quality sound. The speakers fail to disappoint. Its robust and deep sound is refreshing when compared to the ubiquitous "satellite" speakers that most consumers seem to favor. The mid and high ranges sound great through the two smaller speakers. Its rated wattage capacity is impressive; they can be driven very hard. Though JBL notes that it has multiple mounting options, be aware that it constitutes two small bolts on the top of the cabinet (spaced 4 inches apart). Brackets or some other hardware would be needed to securely fasten these to a wall, ceiling, etc.

Denon AVR-2808CI 7.1-Channel Multizone Home Theater Receiver Review

Denon AVR-2808CI 7.1-Channel Multizone Home Theater Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned a few receivers in the past (mostly Sony ES models), but none of them compare to this one. Denon specializes in audio, and it shows! Don't get me wrong, I love and own alot of Sony's products (two TVs, PS3, Vaio computer, DVD player, etc.), but after picking up this Denon and pairing it with a Polk speaker/sub setup, I've never been happier, and the upgrade from the Sony ES it replaced is substantial in many ways.
Denon AVR-2808ci Pros:
-Sound quality is absolutely incredible! Even compressed music from iPod is great ("Restorer" feature really helps!). Highs, mids and lows are all accurately reproduced, and there are tons of custom EQ options!
-Audyssey Auto-Calibration is accurate and thorough.
-Includes decoding of all current and future sound-fields (DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD, as well as Uncompressed PCM and everything else you can imagine, all via HDMI version 1.3a)!
-Display is large and includes alot of necessary info-this thing tells you what it's doing.
-Solid build quality and nice looking!
-Connectivity options (HDMI, toslink, digital coax, component video, s-video, etc.)
-Video upconversion via HDMI using built-in Faroudja DCDi processor, or just passthrough and use as a convenient HDMI switcher (assignable inputs).
-Excellent sound processors, both for movies and music, complement a solid, beefy amplifier.
-Customizable as all heck: 4-stage dimmer, "Quick Select" feature for three sources, learning lcd remote, volume level options, mute level options, default settings per-source, massive amount of EQ/channel level/crossover settings, and more!
-Main remote works great, learns and controls just about all of your gear.
This receiver is truly great for anybody who is serious about their Home Audio/Home Theater. The only drawbacks are that it is very complex, which is fine except that Denon doesn't make it any simpler to understand in the manual. It definitely takes some time to set this thing up and learn its interface. The Sony's I've owned in the past were far more user-friendly from the initial set-up/calibration onward. However, they never delivered results that were even close to this unit, and once you learn it, it does make sense and is relatively user-friendly after setup.
Cons:
-Complex manual and interface takes time to learn.
-On Screen Menu lags a little and blacks out picture rather than a nice overlay. Also, it's not the better looking, more user friendly GUI that more expensive models have (as well as all Sony's).
-Smaller secondary remote only works for other Zones (not a big deal really, but still...)
-Main remote takes forever to program/set up for universal usage. complicated.
-Only two HDMI inputs (could've used at least one more at this price range).
-No HD radio or Sirius support (does have XM).
Overall, minor gripes aside (nothing's ever perfect), I'm incredibly pleased and excited to own this unit and have it as the central hub to my Home Theater. I have Blu-ray now (PS3) and the advantages and options both now and in the future are vast. I'm confident that the Denon AVR-2808ci will allow me to take full advantage of that and other things for years to come. Mostly, though, it just cranks out amazingly good audio from any source, and that is ultimately what receivers are for. Highly recommended!

ZVOX 425xs High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System Review

ZVOX 425xs High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had two different Zvox models at home for the last couple of months, but this commentary could apply to either the 425 or 525 models.
Prior to ordering my first Zvox, I went the more common digital route of a separate Onkyo receiver/amplifier, a speaker bar by Definitive Technologies and some high-end cables. I am not an audiophile, but not averse to a challenge. Setting it all up was a nightmare. I couldn't get a reliable on-screen menu either through the HDMI connection, or through the analog inputs, regardless of how I configured the connections. Additionally, since I needed to hide the receiver, I needed an infrared repeater to turn it on, and it never worked reliably, regardless of where I positioned it.
In summary, I had a system that could not be reliably turned on with my remote, did not reliably give me an on-screen menu for most of the receiver functions, and increased the ambient temperature in the living room by about 4 degrees if it was left on all day (I was rather amused by thinking that at least I had a back-up heating system should the furnace ever fail). I put the better part of 15 hours in to set this up, and reconfigured it again and again. I also probably spent nearly another two hours speaking to people at Onkyo, Definitive Technologies, and the folks who manufactured the IR repeater. And watching something on TV could take minutes of "prep."
Finally, the irritation overwhelmed me, and I boxed everything up (including my 100 page Onkyo receiver owner's manual) and sent it back. At the same time I was doing a bit more research, and discovered the AVS forum thread covering the Zvox models, and it seemed to provide the best discussions and summaries of the different units (from an ordinary user's point of view). I decided to try one.
Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! This is exactly what the Zvox provides! My television, with its clean, easily visible, intuitive on-screen menu is a great switching station for inputs. And the units turn themselves on or off automatically when it senses a signal (or lack thereof) from the TV. Set up is basically five steps: (1) Run analog RCA cables (supplied) from TV's analog audio output jacks to the Zvox, (2) plug in the Zvox, (3) turn the "ON" switch at the back of the Zvox on; (4) go into the TV's menu screen and shut off (once and forever) the TV's cheap, tinny-sounding, cheesy little speakers; and (5) watch TV or a movie. That's basically it!
It does a very good job of filling the room with sound. It feels like the sound is emanating from an area about eight or ten feet wide in front of the TV, bass is quite intense (especially with the 425 model), and dialog is very clear. No need to bring up subtitles or closed captioning when listening at low volume levels. It doesn't make you feel that you are surrounded by sound, but the effect is rather more like you are watching a play or musical performance in a theater. There is a sense of directionality, but it is pretty much from in front of you. I have never quite understood why people like sound that is coming from behind them, when the action is taking place in front of them (?!), but, as I mentioned above, I am not an audiophile, so perhaps I just do not understand why such things are important. Music, in particular, seems much more crisp, clean, and natural than it did with my previous "all digital" system. I have my unit set with bass, treble and phase cue (the simulated surround sound) at about level 5, and haven't found a need to change anything. Set it, forget it! I can't express how much I appreciate it that someone has put together a speaker system with such wonderful quality, and which is brain-dead simple to set up and manage.
As far as shortcomings are concerned, in my view, there are only a couple: (1) as mentioned in another review here, sometimes higher notes lack a bit of clarity or lightness, but to me this seems only to be the case when the volume and/or phase cue is set very high; (2) TV programs or DVDs with garbage audio quality will be played back the same way (what you give this Zvox is exactly what it will give back to you). If you play a garbage sound recording, you will get back garbage. Moreover, it will be full-bodied, wide soundstage, room-filling garbage. I guess this is what "fidelity" means in the term "high fidelity"). You don't seem to be able to do much about this, but if you are listening to decent recordings, it is a very, very good thing.
I think anyone who wants a quality sound system and who wants to eliminate (or prevent the occurrence of) another level of complexity in life (which, I am convinced, is slowly killing us all), this system will be an excellent choice. The surround-sound, five, seven, or nine channel enthusiasts will not be impressed, of course. Fine. Leave them be. I live in a house anyway, not a concert amphitheater. The Zvox is just fine for the rest of us.

The ZVOX 425xs is the first single-cabinet audio system capable of delivering the volume, impact and dynamic realism - including window-rattling bass - of a high-quality multi-speaker surround sound system. We think it will change the way the world listens to movies, music, TV shows and sporting events. Uncompromised home theater sound no longer requires a room full of speaker boxes, subwoofers and wires! The new ZVOX 425xs combines five speakers, two powered subwoofers, a powerful 133-watt amplifier and our proprietary PhaseCue virtual surround sound system - all in one slim cabinet (36.5"w x 5 3/4"d x 7 3/4"h). Created by legendary speaker designer Winslow Burhoe (founder of EPI Loudspeakers and Burhoe Acoustics), it sounds awesome (yes, we know the word is over-used, but the 425xs really is awesome). Movie soundtracks aren't just good sounding, they are startlingly realistic. Bass is solid, accurate and loud down to an amazing 35 Hz (that's better than some 10" standalone powered subwoofers). With three center all-channel speakers, midrange and vocal reproduction is superb - with crystal-clear dialog, even at low volume settings. And like all ZVOX systems, the 425xs reproduces music accurately with natural tonal balance, precise imaging and breath-taking realism. Connect just one cord to your TV and you've created a fantastic-sounding, easy-to-use home theater system...without all the clutter and wires of a traditional surround sound system. "Best buy." - Consumer's Digest "Home theater product of the year." - About.com "Stands tall among competing products." - CNET "The 425 sounded great...rivals many discrete systems." - Sound & Vision magazine "The subwoofers reach remarkable depths with audible output even lower than the claimed 35 hertz." - Chicago Tribune
