Yamaha YAS-70BL Front Surround System (Black) Review

Yamaha YAS-70BL Front Surround System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was tired of speakers and wires all over the room just for Surround sound for home theater. Then I came across this sound bar. It was perfect!
A sound bar plus woofer speaker is all that makes up this system. But it somehow sends great sound all around the room. And the quality of sound is like nothing I've gotten from many other tested multi-speaker wired systems. Bells and high sounds sound real. Storms make you want to look outside to make sure its not real. Explosions, gun shots, you name it, very realistic.
I'll never go back to a wired multi-wired speaker system. Why bother?
My only issue is it has only three connections. One digital optical, one digital coaxial and one analog rca L/R (I don't use).
I added a digital optical switcher, to solve this issue. But they could have designed at least 3 optical and three coaxial as standard inputs.
This system sounds so good, why not complement it with more than enough inputs? However, they did not skimp on sound quality in any way.
Highly recommended! Fits perfect above plasma or LCD wall mounted HDTV's.

Yamaha YAS-71BL Front Surround System (Black) Review

Yamaha YAS-71BL Front Surround System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been searching for a simple budget out of the box home audio solution that had great sound, ease of use and set up, all the connections I needed and lastly esthetically pleasing and not an eyesore. I looked at all the recommended budget 5.1 and 7.1 system (Onkyo is the best deal for full 5.1 systems) and was frustrated by the price and the over engineered complexity of them all. Real surround sound would be cool but ultimately I just wanted a simple solution with strong, rich sound and any simulated surround would be nice too. I have a Samsung 630 and love the TV but the sound sucks. This YAS-71 sound bar and sub-woofer really have enhanced my home theater experience tremendously. I want to watch all the movies I've already seen in HD again now just to hear them in fuller sound. My wife even likes it, I don't think she's nearly as intimidated by it as much as 5.1 component systems would.
This unit has 4 audio inputs plus a connector for an ipod dock; 3 of the inputs are digital audio inputs (2 optical, 1 coaxial). 1 RCA audio input. I highly recommend using the digital audio inputs to get the best and clearest simulated surround sound. I have a PS3 (my Blu-Ray player), a Toshiba DVD player and my DVR hooked up to the digital inputs and the Yamaha ipod dock hooked up. The ipod dock works well and you can control the ipod to some extent with the remote, though the screen on the front of the bar gives you very minimal information and control for your ipod. There are times I'd rather just select my ipod manually on the ipod itself. My 3G iphone worked with it as well as a 30 gig ipod. They all sounded great.
I have a very boxy, enclosed small to medium sized living room (12' x 18') in an older home and it's perfect for that environment. At volume level 50 (halfway) it really fills the room up with rich sound, at the higher levels it gets surprisingly loud without distortion and blowout. Though If you have a very open or large contemporary living room I wouldn't recommend this system; I'd go with more powerful true surround system where you could space the speakers out to fit the room. This YAS-71 really works best in a room with defined walls to work off of. I wouldn't expect any true surround sound from the YAS-71 but there are times while watching 5.1 DVDs and Blu-rays I notice that some sounds really feel immersive and you can feel the simulated surround effect. Prices have dropped on these recently, they used to retail for $500-$600 and for around $300 this is an exceptional deal.
Positives:
* Easy to set up, there aren't a bunch of wires to run around your room.
* User friendly. Wife friendly.
* 4 audio inputs (3 digital) plus yamaha ipod connector
* Clear, surprisingly powerful, robust simulated 5.1 sound for such a contained unit.
* Great value for the money if you can find it at or under $300
* Looks nice in front of most HDTVs. It virtually matched my piano finished black Samsung.
* Great for enclosed rooms.Negatives:
* No onscreen information and controls on your TV screen, info is only on the soundbar screen. This does not have any video passthrough. (this hasn't been a problem for me though).
* It might not have have all the audio connections you need. Check your setup.
* All the inputs are on the sub woofer, so keep that in mind, you might need longer cables.
* Remote controlling ipod is very minimal.
* ipod dock sold separately ($50-100)
* Not so good for open areas.
Conclusion:
Powerful, clear sound and a good number of inputs for most needs. A simple solution for better home audio. I couldn't be happier with it.

Yamaha YSP-4000BL Digital Sound Projector (Black) Review

Yamaha YSP-4000BL Digital Sound Projector (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I now have the new Yamaha YSP 4000 and having tried it out on over twenty different disks, can say without equivocation that it is amazing. So long as you have a room with a good back wall and at least one sidewall, it will deliver incredibly good 5.1 surround sound. Will it be as good as top end systems with five distinct and separate speakers costing $5,000 or more? Of course not. Will it be as good as or better than receiver/speaker systems available today for $3.000? Yes. In other words, this newest Yamaha stands clearly at the point of diminishing returns. After installing it and listening to it, you may decide that you do not need a subwoofer. It did Chicago beautifully. I decided I wanted one for some of the accurate bass on great classical music.
The setup is easy, but when the screen tells you to get out of the room - GO! The sounds emitted during the setup are designed to send cats and dogs into fits of madness. Do not try to audition this unit in a 'big box' store. It relies on nearby walls to help it work. If you have a friend who has taken the plunge, go and listen to it within a real listening area. Anyone who lives in or visits Central FL leave a comment on this thread and I will cheerfully invite you to visit and make up your own mind. If you live in a place where you cannot drill holes in your wall or if you do not want wires and speakers all over the place - this may be the solution for you. It was for me.

The new YSP-4000 Digital Sound Projector offers versatile new features such as, 1080p-compatible HDMI, analog video to HDMI digital video up-conversion, and component/composite inputs. Other features include: iPod and XM HD surround compatibility, built-in FM tuner, RS-232C for custom installation and a wide variety of beam settings, including My Surround Beam, for a true multi-channel surround sound experience from a single component. The YSP-4000 applies the Digital Sound Projector technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls. The result is true multi-channel surround sound that sounds just like a multi-speaker system but without the need for extra speakers! As amazing as it seems, the YSP-4000 can actually deliver multi-channel sound that surrounds listeners the same way that sound from front, center and rear speakers does. DVD movies and other digital sources sound just the way they are supposed to. Dolby Pro Logic II is included, so even 2-channel TV's sound can be heard in true multi-channel surround. Its elegant space-saving design avoids the need of numerous speakers and cables. It can be wall mounted or placed on a shelf or rack. The YSP-4000 has a powerful and efficient digital amplifier built in. It powers the 40 beam drivers at 2W each and the two woofers at 20W each, for a total of 120W of power. There is no need for the customer to purchase an additional amplifier or receiver.

ZVOX 425xs High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System Review

ZVOX 425xs High-Performance Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had two different Zvox models at home for the last couple of months, but this commentary could apply to either the 425 or 525 models.
Prior to ordering my first Zvox, I went the more common digital route of a separate Onkyo receiver/amplifier, a speaker bar by Definitive Technologies and some high-end cables. I am not an audiophile, but not averse to a challenge. Setting it all up was a nightmare. I couldn't get a reliable on-screen menu either through the HDMI connection, or through the analog inputs, regardless of how I configured the connections. Additionally, since I needed to hide the receiver, I needed an infrared repeater to turn it on, and it never worked reliably, regardless of where I positioned it.
In summary, I had a system that could not be reliably turned on with my remote, did not reliably give me an on-screen menu for most of the receiver functions, and increased the ambient temperature in the living room by about 4 degrees if it was left on all day (I was rather amused by thinking that at least I had a back-up heating system should the furnace ever fail). I put the better part of 15 hours in to set this up, and reconfigured it again and again. I also probably spent nearly another two hours speaking to people at Onkyo, Definitive Technologies, and the folks who manufactured the IR repeater. And watching something on TV could take minutes of "prep."
Finally, the irritation overwhelmed me, and I boxed everything up (including my 100 page Onkyo receiver owner's manual) and sent it back. At the same time I was doing a bit more research, and discovered the AVS forum thread covering the Zvox models, and it seemed to provide the best discussions and summaries of the different units (from an ordinary user's point of view). I decided to try one.
Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! This is exactly what the Zvox provides! My television, with its clean, easily visible, intuitive on-screen menu is a great switching station for inputs. And the units turn themselves on or off automatically when it senses a signal (or lack thereof) from the TV. Set up is basically five steps: (1) Run analog RCA cables (supplied) from TV's analog audio output jacks to the Zvox, (2) plug in the Zvox, (3) turn the "ON" switch at the back of the Zvox on; (4) go into the TV's menu screen and shut off (once and forever) the TV's cheap, tinny-sounding, cheesy little speakers; and (5) watch TV or a movie. That's basically it!
It does a very good job of filling the room with sound. It feels like the sound is emanating from an area about eight or ten feet wide in front of the TV, bass is quite intense (especially with the 425 model), and dialog is very clear. No need to bring up subtitles or closed captioning when listening at low volume levels. It doesn't make you feel that you are surrounded by sound, but the effect is rather more like you are watching a play or musical performance in a theater. There is a sense of directionality, but it is pretty much from in front of you. I have never quite understood why people like sound that is coming from behind them, when the action is taking place in front of them (?!), but, as I mentioned above, I am not an audiophile, so perhaps I just do not understand why such things are important. Music, in particular, seems much more crisp, clean, and natural than it did with my previous "all digital" system. I have my unit set with bass, treble and phase cue (the simulated surround sound) at about level 5, and haven't found a need to change anything. Set it, forget it! I can't express how much I appreciate it that someone has put together a speaker system with such wonderful quality, and which is brain-dead simple to set up and manage.
As far as shortcomings are concerned, in my view, there are only a couple: (1) as mentioned in another review here, sometimes higher notes lack a bit of clarity or lightness, but to me this seems only to be the case when the volume and/or phase cue is set very high; (2) TV programs or DVDs with garbage audio quality will be played back the same way (what you give this Zvox is exactly what it will give back to you). If you play a garbage sound recording, you will get back garbage. Moreover, it will be full-bodied, wide soundstage, room-filling garbage. I guess this is what "fidelity" means in the term "high fidelity"). You don't seem to be able to do much about this, but if you are listening to decent recordings, it is a very, very good thing.
I think anyone who wants a quality sound system and who wants to eliminate (or prevent the occurrence of) another level of complexity in life (which, I am convinced, is slowly killing us all), this system will be an excellent choice. The surround-sound, five, seven, or nine channel enthusiasts will not be impressed, of course. Fine. Leave them be. I live in a house anyway, not a concert amphitheater. The Zvox is just fine for the rest of us.

The ZVOX 425xs is the first single-cabinet audio system capable of delivering the volume, impact and dynamic realism - including window-rattling bass - of a high-quality multi-speaker surround sound system. We think it will change the way the world listens to movies, music, TV shows and sporting events. Uncompromised home theater sound no longer requires a room full of speaker boxes, subwoofers and wires! The new ZVOX 425xs combines five speakers, two powered subwoofers, a powerful 133-watt amplifier and our proprietary PhaseCue virtual surround sound system - all in one slim cabinet (36.5"w x 5 3/4"d x 7 3/4"h). Created by legendary speaker designer Winslow Burhoe (founder of EPI Loudspeakers and Burhoe Acoustics), it sounds awesome (yes, we know the word is over-used, but the 425xs really is awesome). Movie soundtracks aren't just good sounding, they are startlingly realistic. Bass is solid, accurate and loud down to an amazing 35 Hz (that's better than some 10" standalone powered subwoofers). With three center all-channel speakers, midrange and vocal reproduction is superb - with crystal-clear dialog, even at low volume settings. And like all ZVOX systems, the 425xs reproduces music accurately with natural tonal balance, precise imaging and breath-taking realism. Connect just one cord to your TV and you've created a fantastic-sounding, easy-to-use home theater system...without all the clutter and wires of a traditional surround sound system. "Best buy." - Consumer's Digest "Home theater product of the year." - About.com "Stands tall among competing products." - CNET "The 425 sounded great...rivals many discrete systems." - Sound & Vision magazine "The subwoofers reach remarkable depths with audible output even lower than the claimed 35 hertz." - Chicago Tribune

I purchased this product because it was much cheaper than the yamaha soundbars, but did not have good luck. It had a constant ringing, no matter where I located it, or what input it was on. The build looks good, the unit looks great, but I couldn't get it to work properly. There is no tech support I could see to get help either. No SW out port either.

Yamaha YSP-800 82-Watt Digital Sound Projector, Black Review

Yamaha YSP-800 82-Watt Digital Sound Projector, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This unit is simply amazing! I first heard the original YSP-1 in December 2005 in a professional sound room at a local hi-end audio store. During the demo, the sound was actually coming from behind and next to me! I was in wonder. The clarity was amazing. The only thing that kept me from buying right then and there was the price tag of $1500.
So when I saw the new models online, and a price tag of nearly half the original (I actually got mine for less than half :o) I just had to put it on my list. And this one sounds even better!
Plus, no wires is key! And the look is simple elegance. Plus, to see the look on a friend's face when he hears the surround sound and can't find any speakers back there is priceless!
The cleancher for me was when I played the first "top sound quality" dvd - The Last Samurai. I almost jumped off the couch during the battle scene. This speaker rocked the house! Far surpassing the clarity of my past $400 Sony and Panasonic 6-speaker systems. And I didn't even have Yamaha's matching subwoofer yet.
Don't be dissuaded by the stringent room set up. My livingroom has one side wall of glass windows, and one broken wall with a couch. And still the sound comes from all around. With just a little thoughtfulness and tweaking (and the simple automatic microphone setup), I got full surround.
Now, I have the matching YST-FSW100 subwoofer. GET IT! This allows the speaker to focus solely on hi and midrange sounds and lets the deep base to the sub. So much better sound.
Just the idea that one speaker can do such an amazing feat is worth the purchase in my mind. And it does it so well. Five Stars Yamaha!

Do away with bulky surround sound speaker systems while still bringing your movies and music to life with the Yamaha YSP-800 digital sound projector. Housed in a single bar-shaped body but equipped with 23 speaker drivers--each with its own digital amplifier--the YSP-800 delivers full-bodied, multichannel sound through a single elegant component. The device works by focusing the sound into "beams," and then projecting them at optical angles into the room via the analytical IntelliBeam function. At the same time, the YSP-800 controls the driver delay times and optimizes the level and frequency response of each beam. The resulting sound waves--both direct and reflected--create a soundscape that seems to be coming from speakers placed throughout the room, but in reality is playing through the digital sound projector.
The YSP-800 isn't just about sound, though. Its slim, contemporary design is also wildly convenient, as listeners no longer have to find complementary locations for five satellite speakers and a subwoofer, nor do they have to fuss with extra-long speaker cables running all through the house. Rather, listeners can place the YSP-800 next to or on top of their video display, or they can purchase an optional wall-mount bracket and hang it securely on the wall. The latter option is particularly handy for owners of moderate-sized flat-panel TVs and monitors, as it both saves space and visually complements the display. The projector is even versatile enough to work in corners or other unusual room configurations.
The projector's versatility extends to its variety of sound modes, which include a five-beam mode, a three-beam mode, a stereo mode, a stereo + three-beam mode, and a target mode. Each mode produces a unique effect that varies depending on the shape of the room, the orientation of the projector, and other factors. Meanwhile, a subtle blue LCD on the projector's base keeps listeners informed of the current surround setting and volume level.
Listeners will also dig the YSP-800's built-in 82-watt digital amplifier, which connects directly to A/V components. The amp offers a host of valuable features, including Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS Neo:6 decoding and a trio of Cinema Digital Sound Processing (DSP) programs (Movie, Music, and Sports). Connectivity stems from the three digital audio inputs (one coaxial and two optical) and two analog audio RCA inputs. The device also offers a subwoofer output terminal for listeners who want to enjoy a more robust bass performance.
The YSP-800, which is outfitted with twenty-one 1.62-inch tweeter/midrange drivers and a pair of 3.94-inch woofers, measures 31.5 by 6 by 4.5 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty.

Yamaha YSP-1000 120-Watt Digital Sound Projector, Silver Review

Yamaha YSP-1000 120-Watt Digital Sound Projector, Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just set up my YSP-1000 last week. For the record it is wall mounted in an almost square room 22X25 ft. I chose this system as it seemed to give me the surround sound I wanted without running cables across floors or through walls. The set up is very easy with the included microphone and installation by myself took less than an hour.
The sound is clear and definitely gives the impression of coming from different points in the room. This may not be as clear however if the room has openings or different surfaces (mine does not). The YSP gives you the option of multiple listening methods, 5 beam to simulate 5 speakers, 3 beam for 3 etc. I have used 5 beam almost exclusively although the night feature is useful for lower volume levels. It is important to note that the 5 beam is only available if you have a square or rectangular room.
Because the speaker is focused on one point in the room, (the place where you put the microphone in the set up phase) you do get a faint echoing if you move a reasonable distance away from the center point. On a 3 seater couch I didnt notice significant difference unless I walked towards the room corners. Overall however, the appearance of one single speaker strip mounted above my tv and almost true surround sound outweighed the alternative of multiple speaker points and holes in my walls.
Best of all, if I move, it just comes off the wall and comes with me.

Polk Audio SurroundBar360° DVD Home Theater System (Black) Review

Polk Audio SurroundBar360° DVD Home Theater System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Observations
Pros: Built like a tank
Simple setup
Cool factor of 10
Cons:
Should have blue ray at this price point.
Frankly I think it needs a subwoofer, Tried it for a few days with a Polk subwoofer and without. Yes it sounds decent without a sub, but only decent, not great. I have yet to hear anything even close to 5.1 or any type of surround. Upon contacting Polk, I was advised that this bar was NOT (unlike the soundbar series) designed to be used above the tv only below with the optimal placement directly in the front of the tv. Frankly the soundbar sitting in front of a 56 inch tv looks horrible, under it it looks built in. Polk indicating that could affect the sound field. Well thats just cute, the whole POINT of this system was it was supposed to give you the 5.1 effect regardless of placement or your position in the room!
It is a nice system, could use a tad more volume, not amazing with the surround, even though the wide open setup I heard at best buy was nothing short of amazing, but in my 12 X 12 living room, far less than spectacular.
Finally save your money, at this price point the 360 is not ready for prime time. If you are looking for solid tight sound in a high end soundbar this is it. If you are expecting the results Polk claims you will be badly disappointed. My old 5.1 theater in a box $300.00 system sounded a tad better frankly.UPDATE:
After owning this a few months I must say it is a complete waste of money.
There simply is no separation in the soundfield regardless of the input signal.
I have tweaked this system to no end with lackluster results.
For a grand there is a endless amount of equipment that you could purchase that would put this system to shame.
Polk missed on this one, if your heart is set on one, wait a while as the price is certain to go down due to the LARGE amount of people disappointed in this system.
This is nothing more than a fancy expensive 2.1 system. Save your money.

Definitive Technology Mythos STS 120v Supertower Speaker (Single, Black) Review

Definitive Technology Mythos STS 120v Supertower Speaker (Single, Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
5 stars based on a fuller range sound coming from a slender design speaker used in a small room when large box towers are not an option. I still prefer large box towers when space is not an issue but those with space limitations should check these out.
1. Packaging was very good, double boxed, secure and no issues with shipping.
2. The STS was an upgrade from my old fronts, Mythos ones. I read great reviews online about the STS and ST and was impressed when I heard them in person. The upgrade made a big difference, the STS really do sound like big speakers with a wide dynamic range which was missing with the Mythos Ones (even with a supercube 1), the Ones sounded thin and small. If space is an issue or the wife won't let you get those big box towers then check out the STS and ST, I was pleasantly surprised.
3. I'm running STS as fronts, Mythos 10 as a center, supercube 1, gems as surrounds in a small room (corner placement of plasma TV). No option but to use low profile slim tower fronts. Audyssey Multieq was run and then I fine tuned with a SPL meter. Audyssey set the STS at 40 hz crossover, Mythos 10 to 80 hz crossover, and the gems at 120 hz. I set the STS to small (crossover 40 Hz) so the very low frequencies go to the sub. Upgrade was well worth the price.
4. STS fronts are great for watching TV in stereo, bass is tight and fast, not boomy. It no longer sounds like TV speakers or lifestyle speakers.

I have a 10 month old daughter. she loves to climb on anything to pull herself up into a standing position. She has forced me to rethink my surround sound set up for her safety. I was using a high end sony amp to power my klispch rc-7 speakers on stands. I ordred the YSP-1100 with serious doubts that I would be truely satified after using a 6.1 system for some time. I was wrong. It works realy well. They have made it easy to install and set up. It even keep some features of a traditonal surround system. One can turn the left, center, right, rear right and rear left volume up independently. the sound quality is very claer. The highs are not as bright as the Klipsch but they are better than most. There are recomendations for room size and shape. the room size recommendations are (width 3 to 7 meter, h 2 to 3.5 meter and depth 3 to 7 meter). You will also need four walls in the sitting listing area to reflect the sound. Sound reflection is how it is able to achive the surround sound. I know it sounds like a gimmic but it does work. Here is my list of pro's and con's
pro's
1. Easy to set up.
2. Great sound.
3. No running wires between amp and speakers.
4. Wall mountable (with optional mounting bracket).
5. Sub woofer out put (one rca jack).
6. Video inputs (3 conponent and four composite).
7. Two audio inputs.
8. Digital audio inputs (2 toslink and 1 coax).
9. It has a mic to place in the sitting area to allow it to do auto setup.
10. You will not have chair setting really close to rear surround speaker.
Con's
1. No HDMI inputs or outputs.
2. You have to have four walls to get great sound.
3. The room size does matter.
4. If wall mounted be prepared to hide some cables (I ran mine inside the wall, looks great).
5. Needs a sub woofer for the full bottom end sound.
6. It is recommended that is to installed where no furniture will block the sound for reflecting off the walls.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great sounding surround system (if they meet the room spec and have four walls).

Yamaha's YSP-1100 Digital Sound Projector provides true multi-channel surround sound from a single component. As amazing as it seems, the YSP-1100 can actually deliver multi-channel sound that surrounds listeners the same way that sound from front, center and rear speakers does. DVD movies and other digital sources sound just the way they are supposed to. Dolby Pro Logic II is included, so even 2-channel TV sound can be heard in glorious multi-channel surround. Remember, this is true surround sound, not virtual surround, which can cause listening fatigue. This model features 40 built-in beam drivers and 2 built-in woofers, along with 42 corresponding digital amplifiers.
The YSP-1100 precisely controls the orientation of sound by focusing it into beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while the sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off the walls surrounding the listener. SRS's TruBass technology uses harmonics to provide deep and rich bass response. The result is an excellent solution for video enthusiasts who wish to build their home theater systems around larger flat screen TVs and desire a neat, uncluttered, unobtrusive system to match the interior of their room.
Five selectable sound settings allow users to choose between 5-Beam Mode, Stereo Mode, 3-Beam Mode, Stereo+3-Beam Mode and My Beam Mode. The YSP-1100 has a wider soundstage than its predecessors, affording more optimum listening positions within a room. My Beam mode allows users to focus sound to a specific position in their room at the touch of a button to avoid disturbing others.
Yamaha's CINEMA DSP technology, which offers seven audio programs compatible with the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS Neo:6 sound formats, creates realistic soundscapes in any room. For late night movie and music enjoyment, the YSP-1100 features a Night Listening Enhancer mode that allows dialog and quiet passages to be heard clearly, even at low volumes. The TV Equal Volume mode prevents sudden bursts of sound from TV programs and commercials.
The YSP-1100 offers simple video input selection with a multi-language onscreen display. Video can be selected from any of two component inputs to a component output, or from three composite inputs to a composite output with superimposed onscreen display menus in any of four languages (English, French, German and Spanish).

Polk Audio SurroundBar Speaker System (Single Speaker) - Black Review

Polk Audio SurroundBar Speaker System (Single Speaker) - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My Home Theatre was a reasonable system by any measure and better than most. However, my wife re-arranged the living room furniture and in one stroke my cherished system was made redundant. My two rear wall mounted speakers were now on my left and with no possibility to be mounted somewhere else.
It was time to look at the Polk & Yamaha products.
Being unable to audition a Polk SurroundBar and Yamaha YSP-1000 in an A/B comparison, I consequently decided to purchase both, with the idea that I would eventually keep one and sell the other.
I have now had both units for about 10 weeks and when doing my A/B comparisons, both systems are set up so that one speaker is sitting just above the other, playing the same material and with instant A/B switching via remote control.
Note - It takes quite a few readings of instruction manuals to eventually understand how to set them both up properly.
After comparing Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pink Floyd Pulse and a variety of CDs and music videos, my assessment is :
1/. Both products do produce a satisfying sound field effective for watching movies (albeit in very different ways).
2/. In my living room ( which is pretty "live") and my equipment with the Polk, they both sound remarkably similar. This was a big surprise to me.
On CDs and some music videos, most noticeable differences in sound is mostly due to subwoofer performance.
3/. Does either system produce effects equal to a 5 channel system with discrete rear speakers ? Of course the answer is "no". Neither of these systems can produce rear surround effects as distinct as those generated by rear surround speakers.
But in so many ways this question misses the real point as to the issues these products successfully address :
4/. Let me rephrase the question :
Do both systems produce a big sound field that envelopes you, similar to what one might experience at a real cinema? The answer is "YES"
Do you hear convincing surround sound effects as intended by the movie producers, immerse you into the movie and thus enhance your enjoyment ? Once again the answer is "YES".
5/. If you want decent home theatre sound but cannot install a multi-speaker surround system or you simply don't want to, then these products are a solution that do work.
6/. After reading forums on the net, I had the idea that the Polk was going to sound better than the YSP when it came to music. Actually for CDs etc, they both sound about the same, have a similar tone, both produce a big sound, go as loud as each other (and that can be very loud indeed). Nothing to distinguish one as being really better than the other, assuming that the Polk is coupled to a quality surround amp and sub. The surprise here was that the Yamaha with it's myriad of "tiny" 2 watt amplifiers is comfortable at really loud sound levels.
7/. Which is better?
Both have plus and minus points so it isn't that clear cut.
Yamaha YSP-1000 with matching YST-SW225B 150W subwoofer :-
PLUS points :-
+ Guaranteed a great sounding Home Theatre system. Yamaha engineers have made sure of that.
+ In-built power amplification ( this is termed an 'active' speaker and is generally a desirable configuration)
+ Decent pre-amplifier functionality eg volume control (with dB level displayed), bass & treble control, audio & video input selection ( selectable 4 sources ), auto-room equalisation, plenty of surround sound modes, IR signal pass-through, a remote control capable of macros etc. In fact the YSP-1000 has a remarkable amount of technology literally stuffed into it.
+ More effective in producing distinct surround sound effects than the Polk, especially when set up in it's "ideal" configuration. ie centred against a wall in a square room.
+ YSP can effectively compensate for being in a corner position (contrary to the notion that the YSP works well only when in an ideal environment)
+ Remote can control other manufacturers products.
+ All you need extra is a DVD player and a TV.
MINUS points :
- Requires side and rear walls.
- Looks bulky and industrial, in my opinion not an attractive addition to any living room.
- The Titanium colour ( more like dark grey ) is not a good match with most silver big screen TVs.
- The remote is a bit frustrating at times, too easy to be in the wrong control mode, eg you find yourself changing TV channels when you may intended to change surround mode.
- No HDMI input/output
- Cannot transcode between Composite & Component video signals. You are committed to an all Composite or all Component input / output video signal pathway. ( Not really a problem if every device you connect to the YSP's video inputs has Composite Video out.)
- On-screen menues only available with Composite video. So if you decide to go all Component Video pathway for best picture quality, you then lose your YSP's On-Screen menues.
- No S-Video inputs
- Probably impossible for an owner to tell if any of the 40 speakers/amplifiers inside the cabinet have failed and need replacing.
- Should have a DVD player in built.
POLK SurroundBar :-
PLUS points :
+ Looks great, visually complementing most big screen TV sets very nicely.
+ Does not require side and rear walls to your listening room.
+ Similar to the Yamaha with respect to it's capability to produce a big, convincing sound field.
+ Would make an excellent choice for an "all-in-one" Right/Centre/Left front speaker in a conventional surround system.
MINUS points :-
- Requires investment in a 5 channel home theatre Amplifier plus a Subwoofer
- Not guaranteed a great sounding Home Theatre system. The Polk's full potential could be easily compromised by a `weak link" resulting from a poor choice of ancillary equipment.
- Surround effects are never really localised, rather you hear them as originating from a hazy, general area, as comapared to the Yamaha which creates a more convincing localisation of the effect.
8/. Conclusion :
For good looks - POLK SurroudBar
For rooms without side or rear walls - POLK SurroundBar
For square or rectangular rooms, even with the YSP in a corner - YAMAHA YSP
For "most bang for your dollar" - YAMAHA.YSP
Both sound good ( remarkably similar ) and will probably end up costing about the same to set up once you add the necessary ancilliary equipment to the Polk.
In my particular situation I am trying to rid my living room of as many boxes as possible. Consequently, if Polk had managed to squeeze in a pre-amp and power amp into their SurroundBar and charged accordingly, then the Polk would be my first choice. It just looks that much better than the YSP unit does.
Unfortunately they haven't, so Yamaha stays and I'm now selling off the Polk along with my existing Denon amp, B&W sub & Anthony Gallo speakers.

A perfect sonic and stylistic match for flat-panel and shallow-case TVs, the Polk Audio SurroundBar is designed to offer elegant, high-resolution, single-source surround sound. It comes with everything you need to mount it above, below, or even on your television, and it works with any surround sound receiver. It's an ideal listening system for anyone seeking rich, enveloping surround sound without the space commitment or hookup hassles of a multispeaker system.Polk Audio's patented SDA Surround technology means there's no need to install rear speakers. SDA Surround technology is founded on extensive research into the way human ears process sound and perceive directionality of sound. Unlike speakers or surround algorithms that merely simulate surround effects, the SurroundBar reproduces discrete, multichannel surround sound using a patented combination of signal processing and acoustical geometry called Acoustic Wave Front Reconstruction (AWFR). Since the SurroundBar works directly upon your ears and requires no special room characteristics, it can deliver room-filling surround sound nearly anywhere. As with conventional 5.1-channel systems, you'll hear the best surround effects when you're centered directly in front of the SurroundBar. However--unlike conventional 5.1 systems--the SurroundBar delivers surround sound regardless of how close or how far away you sit. While it's technically a single speaker, the SurroundBar contains seven active drive units, three tweeters, and inputs for all five primary surround channels: front left/center/right and rear left/right. Multiple drive units spaced roughly the same distance apart as your ears allow the speaker to keep you from discerning the actual sound sources. Instead, it will seem as though sound is coming from all around and behind you.The SurroundBar's circuitry maintains proper isolation of all amplifier channels and will function correctly with any amplifier or receiver capable of driving a 4 ohm load (that is, capable of powering 4-ohm speakers). Many receivers are rated for maximum power into 8 ohms but function perfectly well--functioning with about half their rated power--into 4 ohms, too. Wiring a stand-alone powered subwoofer in line with the speaker (a procedure illustrated in the product manual) will heighten the sense of realism and visceral power of the SurroundBar.For even more spacious sound, you can use the SurroundBar with your existing surround speakers, too. In such an arrangement you can wire the surround outputs from your receiver to your separate surround speakers instead of to the SurroundBar's rear-speaker terminals, using the SurroundBar for the front left, center, and right channels only. Better still, if you have a 6.1- or 7.1-channel receiver, use one of your surround speakers as the rear-center speaker in a 6.1 system, or both surround speakers as 2 of the 4 speakers in a 7.1 system (with the SurroundBar's 2 surround channels in filling in the sound for the other 2).The SurroundBar must be mounted horizontally to function properly. Placement directly above or below your TV screen pointed in the same direction as the screen will give the best coordination between your surround sound and the on-screen images. Wall mounting, shelf mounting, table mounting, or stand mounting all work equally well. However, walls or other large obstacles within three feet of the sides of the SurroundBar will reduce the effectiveness of its surround delivery. Cross-corner locations will work just fine. The supplied 25-foot, 10-conductor cable is color-coded and clearly marked for easy hookup. What's in the Box SurroundBar speaker, 2-piece wall bracket, a center-channel base, mounting screws, 25-foot wire bundle, and a quick-start guide.

Yamaha YSP-900 Digital Sound Projector (Black) Review

Yamaha YSP-900 Digital Sound Projector (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's true that this system won't replace a setup with true surround speakers, but it's a good compromise for some situations. I have a small TV room and a wife that didn't want surround speakers on the walls. I also didn't want to rip up the walls to conceal wiring or in-wall speakers. Fortunately the room is rectangular and has hard surfaced walls which makes it a good fit for the YSP-900. If you are considering it, keep in mind that it bounces sound off the side and back walls to substitute for the missing left, right, and surround speakers. Without a good surface in the right place then it won't perform well. In my situation it sounds quite good. I hear a convincing stereo image that extends well beyond the device and enveloping surround effects. Dialogue clarity is excellent.
Other points to consider:
- The YSP-900 may seem expensive but remember that it includes a surround processor and amp so you just plug in your audio sources and go. This also reduces clutter in the minimal installations that the device is well-suited for.
- The bass output is weak so you definitely will want to add a subwoofer.
- If you are planning on wall-mounting, you will need to buy the SPM-K30 bracket which is NOT included. If you have a wall-mounted flat panel TV the YSP-900 will look great under it.

The Yamaha YSP-900BL Digital Sound Projector applies the Digital Sound Projector technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams to provide multi-surround sound enjoyment from a single compact component. The center channel sound is heard directly while the sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls. The result is true multi-channel surround sound that sounds just like a multi-speaker system but without the need for extra speakers. The YSP-900BL delivers multi-channel sound that surrounds listeners in the same way that sound from front, center and rear speakers do. DVD movies and other digital sources sound just the way they are supposed to. Dolby Pro Logic II is included so even 2-channel TV's sound can be heard in true multi-channel surround. Its elegant space-saving design avoids the need of numerous speakers and cables. It can be wall mounted or placed on a shelf or rack. The digital amplifier individually drives 21 sound beam drivers at 2W each and two woofers at 20W each for a total of 82W of power to deliver true multi-channel surround sound for this elegant home theater system.

Sony HTCT100 Sound Bar with Subwoofer - Black Review

Sony HTCT100 Sound Bar with Subwoofer - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I tried several 2.1 speaker systems to enhance the sound from our LCD HDTV. The 2.1 speaker systems used the RCA audio output from the TV but I was never satisfied with the quality of the sound, even from the Bose Companion system. I think part of the problem is with the low-level output of the TV's RCA audio connection and for this reason I decided to look for a speaker system that could take advantage of my HDTV's digital optical audio output connection. I also didn't want to have a five-speaker system all around the room and so I focused my search on soundbar-type systems. The Sony HT-CT100, just recently introduced, fit the bill perfectly and comes at a price much lower than the Yamaha and Philips soundbar systems with optical inputs.
The Sony HT-CT100 produces great sound. The speaker bar is very low profile and takes up very little space whether you sit it in front of the TV or hang it on the wall. The subwoofer is large (about the size of a desktop PC) and sits on the floor. The subwoofer has a nice display along the top edge of the box to tell you the various system settings. Best of all, the 200 watt amplifier (built-in to the subwoofer) has multiple HDMI and optical audio inputs and acts as the control center for a complete home theater/sound system. This was an unexpected bonus -no need for a separate home theater receiver. Just plug your satellite system, DVD player(s), game consoles, etc. right into the HT-CT100 and control everything from the remote. It's an elegant solution and I haven't seen anything else quite like it. Since the system takes in digital video/audio directly, you get to enjoy full Dolby Digital surround sound. The system can belt out remarkable volume levels and rich, deep bass. The speaker bar has left, right, and center channel speakers along with the remote control IR sensor. The Sony remote supplied with the system will control all your Sony components; however, if your HDTV, DVD player(s), etc. are not Sony brand (like mine), then be prepared to buy a universal learning remote in order to program the HT-CT100 commands. While I can decipher having several remote controls, I prefer to use a single remote control so that my family has an easier time turning on the TV or watching DVDs. The price of the Sony soundbar system is very reasonable considering its power output and multiple digital video/audio inputs to control your home theater. The quality is impressive (though I did have to return my first system due to a soundbar speaker buzz -my second system is flawless) and it looks and sounds like high-end gear. When I shop for items like this, I look at features, quality, and price without regard to the brand. In this case, Sony simply has a product that works great and provides an elegant solution for those wanting home theater sound in a low-profile package. It's a winner.

This amazing system brings simplicity and performance together by pairing a center speaker and subwoofer to create a surround sound experience in a compact package. Bring your movies to life with the HT-CT100. With three HDMI inputs on tap, this system is tailor made for anyone looking for an easy, quick, and great-sounding solution for their home theater. It can playback LPCM from the HDMI connection, plus you can listen to your favorite music from the DIGITAL MEDIA PORT that works with various accessories (sold separately). The HT-CT100 can also control a select number of BRAVIA televisions with BRAVIA Sync via the HDMI interface. With "One Touch Play," operations that normally take several steps have been reduced to one.

ZVOX 525 Low-Profile Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System Review

ZVOX 525 Low-Profile Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Zvox now has three of these low profile "z base" speaker systems in its lineup -- the 525 (which is the smallest and least expensive), the 550 (the original model), and the more massive 575 (which is called the "Incredibase"). I wanted something as small and unobtrusive as possible to provide sound with a 40 inch LCD HDTV in a moderate sized bedroom or office space and I wanted solid, natural sound for watching movies. I bought this model, the 525, after reading consistently glowing reviews of the original and slightly larger 550.
The cabinet is a tad over three inches high, 24 inches wide and 12 inches deep. It is well finished and solid. The end panels are a piano black lacquer that looks very attractive if you have your HDTV on an open stand with three sides of the Zvox exposed. Yes, you can indeed stand your HDTV right on top of the Zvox. The shipping box comes with a warning sticker that says not to put anything on top of the Zvox that is wider or deeper than the Zvox cabinet itself. However, the specs also say it will support up to 70 pounds. I contacted Zvox directly and asked whether I could use the 525 as a base for my 40 pound, 40 inch Sony XBR9, which is about 36 inches wide. Zvox advised that so long as the pedestal footprint is smaller than the Zvox cabinet and the unit weighs less than the limit, it is fine. Obviously the warning was written by the lawyers, not by the sales and technical staff. Nevertheless, I would not be comfortable going with anything larger than a 40 inch (diagonal) 16:9 flat panel with this unit and would step up to the larger Zvox models for bigger screens.
With an HDTV perched atop it, this unit virtually disappears. All you will see from the front is a matte, charcoal grey mesh grille and, with the power on, a small blue LED that lurks behind the grille. Hooking this up is a snap. You can run the analog output from your CD, DVD, blu-ray, iPod/iPhone or HDTV directly into the two channel RCA plugs in the back; then plug the power in; and then you're off and running. No muss, no fuss. There is a tiny and simple to operate remote, which controls power (on/off), volume, subwoofer, treble and "phase cue" levels (these latter have "+/-" controls). One drawback -- there is no on-screen display for the level controls. Instead, with each 'step' in the levels, which appear to run over a ten step scale, the blue LED flashes to let you know you have made a change with each step up or down. Once you get the hang of it, not a problem.
Now for the sound. Well, you won't mistake this for a $5,000 sound system. No surprise there. However, you will get amazingly potent, natural, well balanced, rich and detailed sound that is somewhat mind boggling given the modest price and size of the Zvox 525. You can even shake the walls and windows a bit if you wish. We watched "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" with the Zvox cranked up. When Dumbledore and Voldemort are going at it, you will completely forget that the wall of sound -- the shattering glass, crackling electricity and rolling thunder -- is coming out of this little box. You won't hear the 525 straining under the load. The highs are crisp and glistening. The bass is taut, without boominess, and while not terrifically deep, it is quite natural. Unless you're one of those folks who needs to feel the low end in the pit of your stomach, you will find it quite satisfying.
The ersatz surround sound from the "phase cue" system isn't a substitute for front and rear speakers, but it does make the sound seem to come from a reasonably broad and deep sound stage, not a slender box three inches high by two feet wide. I've tried fiddling with the "phase cue" control and honestly don't perceive a great variation from phase cue on full and turned all the way down, other than a bit of unusual "reverb" that seems to occur with the control turned up. In short, there is no really directional "surround," but there is a very spacious sound.
For the price of admission, the Zvox 525 delivers quality construction, elegant design and ample listening pleasure. I wholeheartedly recommend it. As this is a newly released model and has not been available from Amazon until now, I bought directly from Zvox. Given my experience with Amazon purchases, I'm sure you'd be well served buying it here as well.

ZVOX 550HSD Low-Profile Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System with Optical and Coaxial Digital Inputs Review

ZVOX 550HSD Low-Profile Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System with Optical and Coaxial Digital Inputs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before purchasing this speaker/amplifier system, I read every review I could find. However, no matter how well a speaker review is written, the proof is in the actual listening. After some careful measurements of the space where I intended to put this speaker, I decided to go ahead and spring (also known as "putting a dent" in the credit card) for the system. Quick background - I've been using a Yamaha 5.1 channel surround receiver with Bose AM-3 speakers and an OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray player. One of my biggest gripes about compact systems has been high levels of total harmonic distortion. But the simple convenience of fewer remotes and easy adjustments does have its charms.
I received the system about 3 days after placing the order and I set it up the day after I got it. Did I say setup? This marvelous audio soundbar/box sets up faster than an egg on hot asphalt. I ran a set of RCA cables from the TV's analog output to the ZVOX analog RCA inputs. Everything else, video and audio-wise, is plugged into the back of the TV. An optical digital cable from the Blu-Ray player to the optical input on the ZVOX takes care of the DVD audio. Even my PC's audio goes through the ZVOX unit.
The unit itself is wonderfully "invisible" in that it sits under the LCD TV base and does not call attention to itself. The sound? With a little noodling on the included remote (which is larger and easier to use than the chiclet size remote provided with the standard 550 model), I was quite impressed. I played my Blu-Ray copy of AVATAR and with the PHASE CUE setting near maximum, the BASS on maximum, treble on about three-quarters of the allowed adjustment range, I began my listening test. After several minutes, I was struck by the fact that the sound was so full and clear that I got lost in the movie. The speakers just "disappeared".
Several observations: The bass output doesn't have quite enough "oomph" for my taste, so I purchased an inexpensive Yamaha YST-50 subwoofer that worked out just nice. It's compact, provides a nice punch to the bass, and fits almost anywhere. As for the surround effect - the system broadens the soundfield more than adding weird surround effects. Truthfully, I like its overall balanced sound much better than some of the other soundbar manufacturers attempts at faux surround.
In summary, if the complexities of today's audio/video receivers and multi-channel rat's nest of connecting cables is driving you to distraction, try the ZVOX 550 HSD system for small spaces (I'm using it in a third bedroom space which is quite small), or the ZVOX 575 HSD system in larger living room spaces. Simple is best!

LG LHB536 1100W 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System with Smart TV Integrated Wi-Fi Review

LG LHB536 1100W 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System with Smart TV Integrated Wi-Fi
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
LG LHB536 is a overall a good system for the price. Price will probably come down. So if you can wait to buy, keep an eye on the price. Sound is good and there are no wireless speakers but speakers are easy to hook up. The wireless connection is great for streaming video from Netflix. I love this feature. If you have cable set top box you connect the HDMI output from the box to an HDMI input on the LG system. Then you connect the HDMI out from the LG to an HDMI input on your TV. You DO NOT need a digital optical out cable if you connect using HDMI. The instructions that come with the system to set it up Stink but you can get good support by calling their support line.
PROS: Price, sound, picture, wifi with streaming video if you subscribe to Netflix, Vudu, cinemax etc., I POD connect, Bluray DVD. Good telephone support
Cons: The remote is not a learning remote, so it will not turn power on for your TV or cablebox. Manual is lacking details
Update to my review on april 18, 2011. LG has updated the software on this system to include Amazon VOD and additional premium applications. I have networked the Lg to my mac computer and I can listen to my music files and view my pictures on my TV. NICE! Amazon now has the best price on this system under $400.00. Buy it!

LG LHB326 Blu-ray Home Theater Review

LG LHB326 Blu-ray Home Theater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My business partner bought this with the understanding I'd set it up and be paid with burgers and beer. If it worked out, I'd buy one, too. That's not going to happen. He especially wanted the wi-fi feature. The system was extremely easy to set up. It's sleek looking as well as powerful. However, the wi-fi feature merely lets you tune into three pay services and You Tube. Well, it's supposed to do wi-fi, but the wi-fi adapter dongle failed upon installation.
LG's tech support is totally useless. I tried three different calls, got 3 different tech support reps, each was more clueless than the other as they had near zero technical competence.
Rather than exchanging the dongle, he must now repack the entire system, burn another $30 in gas to return the system and get another and then install that one, too. I recommended he just get a refund and buy from a reputable manufacturer with competent employees.
