Griffin Technology Amplifi Home Music Speaker System for iPod (Black) Review

Griffin Technology Amplifi Home Music Speaker System for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is part of a three way Comparison, Bose SoundDock vs. Griffin Amplifi vs. Altec Lansing IM600. Please see my reviews for those other products for detailed comparison:
Design and Features:
Griffin Amplifi: Cabinet made of wood, looks like small shoebox. Has two 2.75" drivers front mounted and a bottom mounted 5" woofer with a bass port. Griffin in the worst Bose tradition refuses to disclose many tech statistics on their unit, but my power estimate puts this at about 30-40 watts, not really much different from the Bose SoundDock. (To sound twice as loud needs a 10 times (1000%) increase in wattage, so the Bose advantage of maybe 33% more power should not really give much real world benefit.) Frequency response per mfgr is 50-16,000 kHz which seems a bit unbelievable on the low end, but feasible enough on the higher end. Ipod docks on top and sticks awkwardly out of the unit like a control tower, but fit is snugger than on Sound Dock which makes me feel more reassured.
There is a line-in and not much more. Big blue-lit knob controls on-off and volume. Remote is a copy of the Bose's with the same simple functions. Range and aiming tolerance is inferior to both the Bose and the Altec, but certainly adequate. Annoyingly, the Amplifi only charges an Ipod docked in it when the Amplifi is on; if the Ipod is docked and the Griffin is turned off, no charging. Either Griffin's engineers are idiots, or they decided to save a few pennies in the design.
Sound:
Griffin: Bass is about as good as the SoundDock, maybe lower extension, but roughly the same precision and balance. Griffin is to be commended for not going crazy and letting the big 5" woofer run roughshod over the sound of the Amplifi. The big woofer does not make the Amplifi sound better than the Bose at the low end, but on the other hand it doesn't sound worse, and it is also much cheaper. Griffin was not aiming to beat the Bose here, but rather to equal it with a lower price and simpler design. Mid-range is another strong point here, and treble is also a bit lacking, like in the Bose, but not too much so. Classical pieces still sound very good on the Griffin.
Where the Amplifi does lose ground to Bose is in the fancy stuff. Stereo separation is non-existent, and detail is nowhere near as precise as on the Bose. This sounds like a big loud mono speaker. Low volumes especially lose a lot of fine subtlety, and distortion is heard at the very highest volumes (though to be fair, no one would really play this unit that loud, as it is probably 100 dB or more.) The acoustically tuned all wood cabinet adds little to the sound signature of the Amplif vis a vis the plastic cabinet of the Bose. The lack of stereo separation, detail, and full clarity throughout all volume ranges is where the added cost of the Bose is most evident and justifiable. Most users will like the Griffin though; it mimics the sound signature of the Bose convincingly, has a retro wood cabinet design, and has at least one important feature that the Bose lacks, a line-in, all of this at a street value of 1/3rd of what the Bose goes for. This will make the Amplif a great solution for most users, especially those on a budget. However, the added price of the Bose does create a noticeably superior sound in at least some aspects.
Value:
Griffin: List of $150, normally seen online at roughly $115-$125. I picked mine up at Circuit City for $100.
Summary:
Bose: Probably not worth $300, the price I paid of $225 feels like about what the SoundDock is worth. The sound is audibly better quality here, though probably not two to three times better than the Griffin or the Altec, which is what the pricing would indicate. The lack of a decent feature set makes the Bose seem like even less of a value. Again though, if style, quality, simplicity, and excellent sound is your goal, and price does not matter that much, the Bose is a fine choice. Special note to all the Bose haters: take a listen to this before lumping it in with such atrocities as the Acoustimass and StereoEverywhere technology. The SoundDock sounds unusually good, does not mangle realism of the sound unpleasantly, and is really the cutting edge of what can be done with reproducing Ipod sound from a small one-piece unit.
Griffin: Aims for the SoundDock's sound signature, and generally succeeds. Lacks a bit of polish in both physical and sonic characteristics, but overall is an excellent value. If you want Bose, but can't afford it, the Amplifi will not leave you with many regrets. The wooden cabinet and big bass driver are not utilized very distinctively, but there are no glaring missteps here either. However, if you can afford the SoundDock, the Griffin has no real advantages as its clone philosophy and minimal feature set offer no advantage over Bose except cost. The bigger and better sound of the SoundDock justifies the added cost as long as price is not the main consideration.
Altec Lansing: The excellent design, wonderful feature set, and portability of this unit distinguishes and separates it from the other two. Sound is generally well done, crisp and appealing, and the treble emphasis gives the Altec its own sonic niche. The power difference in watts is not really noticeable except if you are trying to fill up a big room with sound, and why would you be doing that with a wee tiny Ipod dock anyway? Most users will be very happy with the IM600's sound and the quality FM tuner is just the icing on the cake. If you are on a budget, I would say get the Altec as it sells for roughly the same price as the Amplifi, and has many more features including portability. The IM600 has somewhat less bass than the Griffin, but better stereo sound and detail clarity.

Klipsch iFi Speaker System for iPod Review

Klipsch iFi Speaker System for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Klipsch iFi is everything an audiophile could ask for in a self-powered 2.1 $400 dollar system. Compatibility with the iPod is a merely a bonus!
I would like to respond to the previous user's review as it is honorable, but innocently false.
I also own the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's and the Klipsch iFi's, but I'm not sure why the previous user had such a difficult time getting his iFi to sound/image better than his Promedias, so let met male this clear: In no way shape or form is the Promedia 2.1 speaker system even remotely close to the quality, finesse and craftsmanship of the Klipsch iFi. The iFi achieves a far higher level of sound clarity and precision, while being more efficient, effective and exquisite. Klipsch tested the iFi to be almost three times louder at the respective maximum SPL while even maintaining a higher discipline of distortion than the Promedias 2.1's. Yes, three times louder with better sound quality. This does not even put them in the same category. That fact alone can whole heartily explain the price difference between them, but allow me to elaborate even further. The iFi's own RSX-3 satellite speakres provide much more impact and fuller and deeper midrange from a stronger, bigger and more capable aluminum driver. The 2.1's sats use a paper cone driver which is smaller and weaker and is held to the baffle with a cheap foam surround. The iFi employs a better, more elaborate titanium horn loaded tweeter that delivers far more sound with greater accuracy than the cheap plastic ones on the 2.1's. The RSX's are far more sophisticated speakers and deliver a sound that is sonically superior and louder than the proimedia satellites. I'm sorry to undermine the previous reviewer, but he is simply wrong.
The subwoofer even divides these two systems further. The 2.1's use a smaller 6.5" woofer with less power in a small enclosure that lacks both depth and proper porting as it emits gobs of port flutter when being pushed hard. The ifi `s subwoofer is a true beast with a full 10Hz lower frequency range, higher SPL, and far less distortion. Please don't get me wrong, the Klispch 2.1's are great speakers and that's exactly why the iFi is also a great system. Because it simply doest just offer the same experience with the addition of an iPod dock for three times the money. It offers you three times the sound quality and, conveniently has an iPod dock. I should also indicate that the remote, while slightly clumsy and small, is the best iPod speaker remote available do to its range.
I would not trade four promedia 2.1 sets for my iFi's
Here are pictures so you can clearly see I have both systems. You can also see the size difference of the subwoofer and the quality difference of the speakers.
Make no mistake, the iFi's trounce the Promeida 2.1's.
(...)
Thanks

The iFi comes in a silver finish that complements Apple hardware and is designed for easy "plug-and-play" setup. Each RSX-3 satellite encompasses a two-way, magnetically shielded bass-reflex speaker in a rear-firing port and employs a 3.5-inch aluminum woofer and a 0.75-inch titanium dome compression driver coupled to an exclusive round 90-degree MicroTractrix horn, which creates the Klipsch dynamic signature sound. The woofer is a long-throw unit driven by powerful ceramic magnetic motor structures. The Cerametallic cone is lightweight with excellent rigidity, which dramatically reduces any resonance. Soundcast ICO-411 Outcast (Grey) Review

Soundcast ICO-411 Outcast (Grey)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was skeptical at spending this type of $$$ for speakers but I was looking for something I could use in multiple venues, wireless and had good sound quality. The Outcast out-performed my expectations and is worth every dollar. I justified spending the $$$ by realizing that I would not need to purchase an amplifier and install speakers in the Patio area or garage and just saving time in the install was reason enough. Plus, this system works flawlessly with my iPOD as I can goto the previous or next song from the unit at a distance of > 350'. The sound quality has remained constantly impressive even while I use this piece in my garage which is >100' away from the transmitter (Included). I have not tested the 350 avertised range but have not needed to go this far. Also, the battery life is excellent. I have not tested the 10 hour advertised rate, but have used the Outcast at a loud level poolside for ~7 hours without any fade to volume or sound quality. This product is the best on the market and should be at $700 but more importantly, these guys got it right when it comes to wireless quality.

Griffin Technology Amplifi 2.1 Sound System for iPod Review

Griffin Technology Amplifi 2.1 Sound System for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok so here is the deal. I bought this because someone I know also had one, and I fell in love with it. The reason why? well it sounds really, really good. I work at Best Buy and around the holiday season, I tried my iPod touch in every device I could find in the store. There are a lot of choices for docking stations but really I was not impressed with overall performance on most of the devices we had in the store. This one was different. I had tried only one item in the store that sounded great. It was a polk audio dock station and it had hefty price tag on it. Try $400. In polks defense it did include HD radio but still! Needless to say any accessory that cost more than the main product is a hard sell. Anyhow it sounded good but not enough to take my cold hard cash. I listened to this Griffin Amplifi on Christmas Morning when my sister got one for a present. It was music to my ears, Literally. (sorry about that pun) Anyhow the sound was impressive and clear. It didn't sound muddy or muffled and it had plenty of bang. The bass response is very respectable and I figured it would be as I noticed it has a hefty driver on the bottom side. Anyhow the performance is great withg plenty of clarity.
Now for the downside. I am not sure what it is but this device like many out there didn't support charging on the new ipods. My second gen. touch for example was no exception. That asside I new it would still do playback and that is more important to me in the end. So charging asside it's a great device. Also one other minor thing was I noticed that the volume control had a bit of a steps feel as each click upward in volume seemed noticeable. In other words it was not linear, with a smooth increase of volume yet not horrible either. yet it definitely had plenty of volume. Another thing about this step type volume it doesn't have a smooth roll off, so when you turn it way down, it doesn't gently roll off it goes to sort of quiet and then silent with just one more click of the volume control. So hey this isn't a great ambient noise machine, it's minimum volume isn't quite as soft as I hoped. But whatever! I bought this item because it cranks and still sounds great. So that is why I give it a 4 out of 5 Stars. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants quality sound and excellent bass response. :)

Roth Audio ALFiE Integrated 2.1 Speaker System with DVD, CD, and iPod Dock (Black/Silver) Review

Roth Audio ALFiE Integrated 2.1 Speaker System with DVD, CD, and iPod Dock (Black/Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not being an extreme audiophile, I was slightly apprehensive about how this system would perform and if it would match up to our old multi-component system. So far so good! Plus the ability to use it as our primary DVD player is a nice added bonus.
We are using as the main stereo in our living room (medium size room in an apartment) and it is sufficient. The iPod dock works great with our "old" iPod mini. The CD/DVD function works well as does the Video Out (using old RCA composite port not component; we have an old TV), Aux in, and FM tuner. The AM tuner has not been that good- there is an audible hissing sound even with the "Talk" feature on the remote enabled (though that feature does improve it a bit). So other than the AM tuner, we have been pleased, and didn't have to spend an arm an leg as with the Bose stuff...
Finally, I have to admit the system is quite cute and cuddly while being slick. Alfie is our friend.
Cheers.

If you're looking for great sound in a compact system, look no further. The only thing small about this system is it's size. We have one of the model r1's with s1 satellite speaker in our main conference room at my company. The unit fills the large cavernous space of the conference room with deep, rich sound with relative ease. It doesn't matter what your taste in music is, this system delivers. It's audio performance is only rivaled by its attractive design. The professional looking aesthetics looks right at home, whether it's sitting on the credenza in your office or on your nightstand at home.

Aktimate Mini White 2-way Active Speaker System with iPod Dock Review

Aktimate Mini White 2-way Active Speaker System with iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had a pair of these for about 6 months now, and am thinking about selling them. With the units on, and no music playing (and without the RCAs connected), there is quite a noticeable hiss. They even pick up a radio station which I can hear through the hiss. I had them looked at by the EPOZ guys (I live near them), and they couldn't offer any explanation or fix. Apparently this is fairly common with powered speakers, but I don't know how people put up with it. I often like to listen to quiet ambient music, which I simply can't do with these speakers. Thumping house music at loud volume however sounds great - good bass and high end. They look pretty good on my desk too. Going back to an amp setup.

Audioengine A5 Powered Multimedia Speaker System (Black) Review

Audioengine A5 Powered Multimedia Speaker System (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These really do deliver remarkably clean, powerful sound for their size, and they also do well at lower volumes. There's no shortage of gushing reviews for these on the web, so I'll just add a few tidbits of possible additional interest to prospective buyers:
- Each speaker is satisfyingly heavy, and the entire bottom surface is covered by a solid rubber pad to help keep the speaker in place when you're driving them hard.
- The speaker enclosures are silky smooth (no sharp edges or seams anywhere) and feel thick and well made. Overall fit and finish is lovely to behold. You can't help but believe that these will last for a long time.
- The large speakers are exposed (as pictured), but they're made of kevlar, so they look tough and feel tough, and you won't think twice about the lack of a speaker grille.
- The volume control is on the lower-right corner of the left speaker. It's a knurled dial the size of a standard button, and it turns with a nice, smooth resistance for a feeling of scratch-free precision. Ideally, I'd like to see the volume knob on the top of the speaker for easier access, and I'd rather it extended outward a bit further (it's a bit shallow). But tastes will differ depending upon speaker placement.
- The LED power light is on the lower-left of corner of the left speaker. It's a muted, cool blue that looks great when the lights are off. Not too bright to be a nuisance. The kind of blue light that you know is there but almost seems to disappear into the blackness.
- The power on/off switch is on the middle back of the left speaker, near the outside edge, so you can easily wrap your fingers behind the speaker and feel for the switch to turn it off. Not as easy as I'd like it to be, but not a big hassle. Still, if you like to turn your devices off when not in use, you'll want to place them in a way that allows you easy access to the left side of the left speaker.
- The USB port on the top is for charging only, not for audio pass-through from your iPod, but the makers helpfully provide several short lengths of audio cable suitable for connecting your iPod or other device.
- The secondary audio input jack on the back is analog, not digital, so you won't be able to take advantage of the digital audio-out option of an AirPort Express, for example, but the analog connection sounds fine.
- There's no remote control. Here the speakers suffer in comparison with some similarly priced systems that appeal to iPod users, but clearly the decision was made to divert the cost of that feature into creating the best possible sound at this price point.
- When driving these speakers hard for extended periods, the back of the left speaker (containing the power supply) gets very hot. Very hot. Seriously--you could fry an egg back there, so you'll want to ensure proper ventilation if you plan to rock out a lot. My only concern here is that the hottest area is the area surrounding the AC jack into which I plug my AirPort Express. Can the AirPort Express take the heat? Well, it has so far.
- The bass response is great on these, but if you want even more, you can always hook up a subwoofer, because a subwoofer jack is provided. What more could you ask?

iTube Valve Dock w/Speakers Review

iTube Valve Dock w/Speakers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the best piece of audio equipment I've ever purchased, as became obvious from the moment I opened the thorough packaging and saw the white gloves included. It's nicely designed, easy to use, and sounds great. However, the power supply for the iPod dock was faulty causing the power to cut out periodically. My email to Fatman asking what to do about this remains unanswered after 15 days. Rather than go through trying to return the whole 33 lb package to Amazon, and forsake the use of the beautiful product, I chose to replace the power supply at Radio Shack for about $10. I wish this first review could have been 5 stars, but it seems Fatman has some work to do first.
One other note: the product is shipped with a metal cage over the tubes that makes them much harder to see. It is easily removable, but you are warned that the tubes get hot and to leave the cage in place for your safety.

The iTube Valve Dock is a performance hybrid valve amplifier with iPod dock, 27 key full function remote control and matched piano-black high quality speakers for true stereo imaging of music content. Additional input for any audio device (MP3/CD/DVD), video and S-video outputs for iPod Video products. Includes all cables, brush for cleaning and gloves for handling high-chrome finish. Also comes with speakers specifically calibrated to the iTube Valve dock.

The Best of Both Worlds A common complaint in the age of digitized music is that compression kills audio quality. Audiophiles found it difficult enough to cope with 16-bit CDs, let alone a 192 kbps MP3 file. The iTube Valve Dock sets out to restore that quality in your signal chain through time-tested valve technology. Featuring two 6N1 (ECC85) tubes and a single 6E2 (EM87) tube, the Valve Dock marries the warmth of classic audio reproduction with the ease of digital technology. Utilizing a hybrid-tube design platform, the iTube provides superb audio reproduction and attractive design at an affordable price.
Full-Featured iPod Dock Use the Valve Dock with any iPod (except Shuffle). A 27-key remote control is included, giving you complete control over all iPod functionality.
Look and Listen The Valve Dock is ready for video-enabled iPods as well. It features both composite and S-Video output connectors for viewing video on your television. In addition, the device includes two sets of audio-in jacks, for connecting external sound sources, such as a CD player. The included matching speakers provide honest reproduction and complete the package's good looks.
What's in the Box iTube Hybrid Vacuum Tube Amplifier, iTube Docking Station, Fatman 2-way bookshelf speakers in black high-gloss finish, Brush / Glove for cleaning, Power cable, Audio cable to connect Docking Station and Amplifier, Banana Plug speaker cables, Aux source audio cable for connecting CD player etc, and Video cable to connect from docking station to TV.

Pyle-Pro PWMA930I 600-Watt VHF Wireless Portable PA System/Echo with iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

I own a pwma230. It works quite well except it does not seem to be as loud as 200W. So when the pwma930i was available, I recommended it to my church which bought one from mail order. I also bought one for myself through Amazon. Both units made a fairly loud hissing noise even when the volume was turned way down and there was no input. The units also made humming noise when AC was used. Being an engineer myself, I believe the noise is either due to poor design (some kind of cross-talk), or poor workmanship. I sent an email to Pyle Audio, and there was no answer. I would not recommend this product unless the problem is fixed.
Follow-up, May, 2010
I asked Amazon to replace my unit. Without a surprise the replacement unit exhibited the same hissing noise and AC hum. I returned the church unit to Pyle for repair. The hissing noise was reduced somewhat, but was still fairly loud, kind of barely usable. I decided to hold onto my second unit, to give the factory some time to fix a design problem.
I sent my second unit in for repair when my 1-year warranty was almost up. You know what? I received a PWMA-230 back instead. The service department of Pyle Audio must be half asleep. I will continue to report what is going on. Basically, this is a very low quality company, both in its products and in its service.

Audioengine A5N Bamboo (Pr) 2-way Powered Speaker System Review

Audioengine A5N Bamboo (Pr) 2-way Powered Speaker System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got these at my local high-end audio store. My Klipsch ProMedias died a noisy death the night before, but I wasn't in any hurry to replace the speakers. I was considering ordering a set of Focal computer speakers (either the Focal CMS 50 Powered Monitors or the Focal XS Speakers), but had yet to pull the trigger on the purchase. I was also considering waiting for B&W to ship their new computer speakers, but they're just tiny monitors, not unlike the Bose speakers, and I was looking for something with a little more woofer power.
I saw these set up in a demo room, along with the [[A2B Powered Multimedia Speaker System]], so decided to try them out. Let me tell you, the sound quality blew me away, especially for a set of inexpensive powered monitors! And the bamboo finish looks amazing, too! High quality digital files are clean and airy, with clear midrange and adequate mid-bass. For even better quality, I would recommend adding a sub, for which the speakers have RCA (L and R) jacks, so I guess you could add two subs if you really wanted to. Or maybe an extra set of speakers. The volume knob on the front of the left speaker has a very wide range, so you won't need to go into your computer volume control if you don't want to. Speaking of volume, these speakers get quite loud. Definitely louder and cleaner than my old ProMedias, which were pretty good computer speakers for five years ago.
There is a USB charging port on the top of the left speaker, along with another 3.5mm audio in port. The back of the left speaker has the RCA jacks for audio out, and below that there is the primary 3.5mm audio in port. There is also a 110V power connector and the on/off switch, in addition to the fuse. The two speakers connect with an included 18 guage speaker cable (I'm guessing on the guage. It might be a 16 guage cable), which is about 4-6 ft long. The speakers are fairly heavy and solid. The bamboo finish is clean and smooth, covering the front and along the sides, top & (probably) the bottom. There is felt covering the bottoms of the speakers, which is nice. There is a blue LED on the front of the left speaker, which is not annoyingly bright like some computer accessories.
The only thing I wish these speakers had would be an option to plug them into USB instead of the standard 3.5mm phono plug, which could have turned the USB charging port on the top of the left speaker into an actual USB hub. Not a big deal, though.
This is a very attractive set of monitor speakers, and will look fine in just about any decor. As soon as I get a chance, I'll take a photo of them and post it. They would make really great dorm speakers, especially with a powered subwoofer of some type. These are akin to the baby Infinity speakers many of us probably got when we were in college or living in a smaller apartment, though of a higher finish quality. They would also work well in tandem with an Apple's AirPort Express to be used as bedroom/workshop/basement/etc... speakers, controlled through iTunes via an iPod Touch or iPhone using Apple's Remote application.
I never got a chance to hear the Focal or B&W computer speakers, and I'm sure they're quite good, but I doubt they're substantially better (if at all) than the Audioengine 5 monitors. And for many people, these speakers will look better. If you're considering computer speakers in this price range, I highly recommend that you check these out somewhere. You will not regret it!
Pros: Sound Quality!
Price (compared to other high quality powered speakers).
Fit and finish.
A non-proprietary option to add a powered subwoofer.
Cons: USB port is for charging only.
Analog input only, no USB input.
Price (compared to your last set of computer speakers, I'm guessing).
Line out (for sub) on the back doesn't change with volume knob.
These speakers get five stars from me. Outstanding.
Still worth five stars, but after hooking up my powered sub, I realized that the line-out jacks on the back don't change in volume with the volume control knob on the front of the left speaker. This means that to keep the same sub level, you'll have to control the volume from your computer or get a USB volume control knob like the Griffin PowerMate. Fortunately, I have a PowerMate, so I just hooked it up, installed the latest Mac driver, and it worked!
For some reason, the speakers seem to "sleep" on my iMac. For instance, if I come back to the computer after awhile, I have to adjust the volume control on my computer once to get the speakers to wake up. Not sure why this is, but I'm pretty sure it's the speakers and not the computer. This is slightly annoying, but probably won't change my recommendation. I have no idea if it's just my setup or if it's endemic of the speakers.

iPod 40W Hybrid Amplifier BLAC Review

iPod 40W Hybrid Amplifier BLAC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So I decided to pick up some of the tube-based ipod docs to see how they sound, as they have come down in cost.
The good:
Build quality is top notch.
Lots of inputs.
Subwoofer output.
Plenty of power.
Extremely cool looking.
The Bad:
The sound is compressed and thin.
Remote is tiny & flimsy.
It takes up a lot of real estate.
I must say I am really disappointed in the quality of sound from this device. It sounds very thin, and harsh. Strings don't sound smooth and beautiful, and guitars are way too bright and harsh. I did a direct comparison with a Roth MC4 dock that blows it away in every possible capacity.
Bottom line...don't waste your money.

Sculpture Amplifier for iPod - Phonophone II Limited Edition BLACK Review

Sculpture Amplifier for iPod - Phonophone II Limited Edition BLACK
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Looks great, a nice statement piece, but to actually show it to guests, will leave people wondering why I spent money on this.
I am trying to find tiny speakers that I can put in this to make it work better.
The idea is there, but its nearly impossible to hear when there are people chatting in the room.
The placements of the headphones are awkward, to you're always fumbling and finding the best place for the earphones to lay on the holes for them.
I have even resorted to taping earphones to get the best sound.
For the price, its not worth it to be decor.

Alesis TransActive Live Portable PA System for iPod Review

Alesis TransActive Live Portable PA System for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I needed a compact, easily transportable sound and music system for a small dance studio that would work with an iPod and a mic. This very affordable system delivers a clean, crisp sound while charging your iPod for back-to-back classes. If necessary a CD player can be patched into the system and 2 instructors can use their mics at the same time. The system is easy to move/set up and the omni-directional single speaker hits all 4 corners of the room. I use a wireless mic and that needs its own power source, but the Alesis Transactive can run on its own battery.

Roth Audio Music Cocoon MC4 Tube Amplifier with iPod Dock Review

Roth Audio Music Cocoon MC4 Tube Amplifier with iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned my MC4 for nearly a year now and could not be happier with it. My main system is a $20K+ behemoth, so I was very sceptical that this little system would satisfy me for less than the cost of a good power cable on my main system.
Here are my thoughts for making this an incredible system.
1. Match it well with a good set of speakers. I went with the Totem Mites and the soundstage and imaging is magical.
2. Match the system with the room size. My MC 4 and the Totem Mites work well in a small room (10' by 12'). I tried them in a really large room (30' by 20') and I could not believe it was the same system.
3. Which iPod you have matters. The 4th and 5th generation iPods use a very high-quality internal Wolfson Microelectronics digital to analog converter. The really old iPods and the really new ones (including the classic, shuffle, nano, iPhone and 160GB editions do not. Yes, it makes a big difference through an amp.
4. Record everthing in Lossless files. You won't believe the difference.
Overall, I could not be happier with my MC4 and I am thinking of purchasing several others for my office and other rooms.

The Roth Music Cocoon MC4 is a 2x13W tube amplifier and iPod dock combining dashing good looks, ultra-compact dimensions and intelligent valve design to offer the listener a unique sonic experience. In addition to the universal iPod dock, the device includes a 3.5mm mini auxiliary source input, component auxiliary input, and an S-Video output for viewing video or photo content on your television.

Designed for the iPod The Music Cocoon has been designed for use with the iPod (hence the dock on the top of the amplifier which charges and interfaces with your iPod), any portable audio device (that's why there is a 3.5mm socket on the back of the amplifier), any device which outputs audio to a 3.5mm jack (e.g. a laptop), or a CD player (that's why there is a pair of RCA sockets on the back as well).
This means that regardless of the source unit, the MC4 can handle it, which immediately makes it more useful than a simple docking device for the iPod.
Hi-Resolution Pure Tube Sound Get out what you put in. The MC4 will add classic tube warmth and dimension to any signal, but truly shines with uncompressed files and CDs (via the RCA input). Its two 12AX7 and two 12AU7 tubes help deliver astonishing audio quality and depth from such a small amplifier.
Simple Elegance In use, the MC4 is simple to operate, and you can of course control the functionality of the iPod from the remote control. You can also use it to switch sources on the amplifier, a feature strangely absent from some similar amplifier models. The MC4 is also safe from electrical problems, thanks to overheating protection, speaker short circuit protection (and protection when turning on the device), and fuse protection in the adapter. Your investment protects itself.
What's in the Box? MC4, Remote Control, Protective Gloves
