Wilson Dual Band Wireless PSC Amp Kit w/ Mini Antenna Review

This was given to me as a gift and has been pretty handy. It's small enough to take anywhere and comes with a perfect little carrying case. I keep mine in the glove box of my car and use it from time to time. It's easy to set up (really important for someone like me), and it's nice to know wherever I go I'll be able to make a call if I need to. My husband and I do lots of cross country skiing and I love the peace of mind I have knowing we can make a call if we need to. It comes with a wall adapter and one for USB, but I've mostly used mine in my car. It works well.

Had to return it for a dedicated 800mhz unit. Dual worked ok but not as much gain as a single channel dedicated unit. Went to a 32" dedicated antenna and amp for maximum gain at 800mhz range. Wilson builds top gear. You get fantastic customer support.

I was a little unsure of this product since most boosters are basically worthless and don't work what the say. After hooking this up and placing the antenna outside and hooking it all up. I found to get a signal boost. I tested it using the ALLTEL UM175 with a Nexaira Router. I did some testing. Found the signal was a little stronger and the connection was faster. I also noticed that I had less disconnects from the service. I did however get slower service one time in which a power recycle fixed it. So its worth the money since now I dont get disconnected constantly. Also gave a boost to my Sprint EVO phone. No more missed calls.
Shipper sent as promised.

I purchased this product & used on an offshore rig to transfer the outside signal 2G & 3G to my room inside accommodation. The result was totally disappointing as the signal is most of the time is false or no signal. I really regret to purchase such crap. Don't use this item it's fake.

zBoost YX-510 Cell Phone Signal Booster Dual-Band Unit for Home or Office Review

zBoost YX-510 Cell Phone Signal Booster Dual-Band Unit for Home or Office
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In a nutshell:
The YX510 is the cheapest dual-band cellular signal repeater I found. It's easy to set up, easy to use, uses standard RG-6 cable and connectors, and it works very well out-of-the-box. Definitely recommended.
Long version:
At my parents' suburban CT home, the location, the terrain, and the aluminum siding all add up to zero indoor cellular reception. Even outdoors, my dual-band Cingular GSM service gives me at most 1 bar...all attempts to place a call immediately fail. My siblings' Verizon service is a bit better, but still not enough for them to place calls. Up on the roof, though, I found I would get 3 bars (up to 4, if I held the phone over my head), quite sufficient for a reliable phone call. Enter the YX510. It's easy to install, though their recommended pre-installation test procedure didn't leave me optimistic--I couldn't get the base unit's "signal" light to flash green when placing a call from nearby it on the roof (which the manual said would represent a successful test). The error code I was getting from it indicated either the signal was too strong or the interior/exterior antennas were interfering with each other. Undeterred, I installed the main signal antenna (zip-tied to the top of a length of PVC pipe strapped to our old TV antenna pole, to keep it away from metallic objects, as the manual recommends). I tried another test with the base unit placed at ground level about 35 feet away, seperated by a good chunk of the house, but I still had trouble getting a reliable signal. When I finished the installation and moved the base station indoors (about 20-25 feet almost directly below the exterior signal antenna, with the roof and two floors in between), that's when its performance started really shining. Installed in the basement, the YX510 base station gives solid reception for most of the dual-level, 2600 sqft house. My cell phone shows a full five bars most of the time, for anywhere within about about 15-20 feet of the interior antenna (the signal strength slowly drops with additional distance). Once I start a call, my phone's signal strength meter immediately drops to the strength of the signal at the roof (usually 3 bars), so it's apparent that the included omnidirectional antenna cannot "amplify" the received signal. Thus, make sure you at least have a usable signal level at the point where you plan to install the exterior signal antenna, or otherwise consider getting the directional antenna upgrade for the YX510. My siblings and I now have reliable cellular service for more than half of the house, and we can all use our phones simultaneously with no problem. Very satisfied! (Note: I installed the exterior antenna using the YX012 grounding kit, but one could easily use store-bought outdoor RG-6 cable and a grounded female-to-female RG-6 connector instead of that kit.)

Satisfy all your cellular phone needs with the Wireless Extenders YX510-PCS/CEL zBoost zP Wireless Booster, which works with both cellular frequencies (800 and 1900 MHz) and can extend cellular coverage up to 2500 square feet. This unit can handle signals from all the major U.S. cellular carriers.* The package includes everything you need: amplifier base unit, power supply, base unit antenna, low-loss SATV coaxial cable (RG6), signal antenna and mounting hardware. The omni-directional signal antenna receives signals from multiple cell towers.Using a revolutionary, patent pending technology that protects the carrier network, the YX510 improves indoor cell phone coverage by capturing and repeating the outside signal, bringing it into the building and enhancing it. This process creates a "Cell Zone" in your home or office.
Click here to see a PDF overview of setting up the Wireless Booster.
The Wireless Extenders zBoost system includes:
Outdoor antenna (repeats the signal) can be installed outdoors above the roofline or indoors in the attic or near a window
Coax cable (RG6- ultra low-loss, DBS satellite) connects from the outdoor antenna to the base unit
Base unit: Sleekly designed, it amplifies the signal and provides oscillation detection/correction which protects the carrier network using patent-pending technology.
Indoor antenna connects to the base unit to repeat the signal and create "Cell Zone"--no physical connection to the phone is needed.

*The use of radio distribution equipment that enhances, extends or amplifies a wireless signal may be prohibited without the consent of the wireless carrier upon whose network such equipment will be used. You should consult with your carrier before purchasing such equipment to use with that carrier's service.

Installation Choosing the best location for installation of the Signal Antenna provides the best performance and the largest area of improved signal. Determine the location that provides the strongest signal using the signal strength indicator on your cell phone. For the best reception, find the location that provides the most bars of signal strength and locate the Signal Antenna at that location.

I bought the amp because of needing signal boost inside a mobile home. It has definitely made a big difference in my phone signal in my home. Before receiving the amp my calls were constantly being dropped or I was not receiving calls or texts at all in my home. I am very please with my amp. The service was also great from Wilson Electronics.

Buyer beware: The cables and outside antenna shipped do not match the photo. Both included antennas are 50 ohms impedance but cables are 75 ohms. The photos look like those on the Wilson web site - ultra low loss LHR400 (50 ohms) with Type N connectors but actually are inexpensive RG-6 (75 ohms) with Type F connectors. A Type N adapter is attached to mate to the antennas. I've contacted the manufacturer directly to determine how much signal loss this will cause.
Update: Wilson (manufacturer) told me these parts must not be used with mis-matched impedance. I contacted seller customer service and they accepted full responsibility for the kit error and arranged for no-cost return and promply refunded the full cost of the product. I was totally satisfied with the response and would have no issues ordering from them again.

Wilson Electronics 801213 Cell Phone Signal Booster Kit for Vehicle w, Hands Free Cradle - for Multiple Users

Purpose for me writing this:
I am taking the time to relay my own personal experiences because of the ridiculous amount of hype and seemingly fact-deficient information about cell phone amplifiers and repeaters that I found while researching them on the Web, prior to buying the Wilson 801213 kit. As an example, one apparently exclusive dealer for another amplifier company appears to chase posters around the Web from blog to blog, every time someone asks a question comparing these type of devices, with what I perceived as "used-car salesmanesque" pushiness in response to their questions. He touts the product he represents as being superior in every way, without providing any third party testing/clarification to back it up, which is something I didn't see on the Wilson dealer sites. There seems to be a lot of that sort of thing with some of the other amplifier manufacturers too but I don't know if that really means anything in the end. In fairness, I shouldn't judge the product by the pushiness of its vendors. But hey, I'm only human...and slightly paranoid about getting ripped-off by a huckster too.
Another drawback I found in trying to objectively select the "best" amplifier is that you also can't walk into brick and mortar retailers who sell these devices and take a look at them in person, because they are almost exclusively sold online or by mail order.
One last thing, I did not buy this particular kit from Amazon (even though I love Amazon), so I can't comment on any of the vendors who sell the Wilson amplifiers on here. So, keep in mind that my comments are just my unscientific, yet unbiased opinions of the product itself (and worth what you paid for them - nothing).
Where my Wilson 801213 is mounted:
I bought the 801213 for use in a 2008 Dodge 4 door pickup. I elected to permanently mount mine (I hid the wires), with the cradle (which has the inside "repeater" antenna built into it) just in front of one of the driver's side air vents, facing slightly upward. The exterior magnetic-mount antenna is placed on top of a metal headache rack (for you city folks that is a louvered metal protector for the back window of a pickup) and not on the roof. The manufacturer suggests a roof installation for the large ground plane it provides, but my setup works just fine. I'm no two-way radio installer so let's hope I have it right. If I walk out tomorrow to a fully fire engulfed, flaming pickup truck, we'll know it didn't work.
If you plan on leaving the unit plugged in, you will probably want to put the power plug in your cigarette lighter receptacle that turns off when you turn the key off, otherwise it may drain your battery. It has a toggle switch on the plug with a little LED power indicator light, which is nice, but if you are perpetually zoned-out like me, you'll forget about it if it doesn't turn itself off.
My phone/data card:
Verizon Blackberry Storm and Sprint PCS Sierra Wireless 595u on a Fujitsu laptop.
Evaluation of the unit itself:
I live in the Fort Worth, Texas area and really don't have to use this device much in town because I usually have a good enough signal. However, my use of this device is primarily when I leave the city limits and head to the country (mostly in West Texas- from Fort Worth to Lubbock) along Texas State Highway 114 which is one long, notoriously dead area. Usually, just one flip of the cigarette plug switch and my phone goes from no/weak service and "zero bars" to at least 4 and usually 5 bars of usable cell service (but it does vary widely sometimes) and I'm able to talk continuously through areas that I never had been able to before.
I recently drove through 260 miles of open (long areas with clear, multi-mile line of sight topography) rural highway, and kept turning the unit off and on to compare the normal (non-amplified Blackberry) signal I had inside my truck, with the amplified signal and external antenna. The difference was phenomenal. I was getting close to -80db (which is what I get in town) most of the way where signal reception normally varies from the high -90s to -115 db (crappy). Although I'm not sure if the signal bar/ db readout is just the phone reading the signal strength of the repeater signal inside the vehicle or what, the end result was the same because I had constantly strong cell coverage (data, text, voice).
With this unit, I can talk continuously on the phone through some of the smallest dots on the map, that normally have weak or no usable signals. The usual dead areas in West Texas (partial counties at times) all but go away with the unit turned on. That alone proved to me that this thing works.
The unit works best (as far as signal amplification goes) when you actually have your phone mounted on the cradle itself and are using Bluetooth or some kind of external earpiece to talk. If you get your phone too far away from the cradle (like more than ~ a foot), at least in my experience, the "repeater" signal gets much weaker but still works. Several of Wilson dealer Websites also mention that the repeater unit (like this one) is best suited for urban use and direct connect units are best for weaker signaled, rural areas, which I would imagine is true. Unfortunately, I don't have the option of having a cell phone with an external antenna, which you have to have for the higher powered direct-connect amplifiers (like the 811201) to connect to. I can see where the direct-connects would work better in the sticks, but this wireless one works great for me anyway.
The cradle is independently adjustable on both sides to get around all of the side mounted buttons and jacks your phone has, which is another nice feature. If you are going to use it with more than one phone/data card, you'll probably have to remove your phone from the cradle to let the "repeater" signal emanate to the other in use phones/cards, but that's just my anecdotal observation.
As for using a data card, I keep my laptop resting on the center console of my front seat with the data card facing the cradle, about 18 inches away. I notice a big difference in the data card signal (down to ~ -47 db in town), and a big difference in signal when in rural areas too, but, admittedly, I need to do more research with the data card. I've only used it a few times with the amp but it does seem to help significantly. My problem is that much of the rural area I was using it in was roaming (no fault of the amp) so I cut it off.
Pros:
Signal amplification makes a tremendous difference in areas with spotty coverage and is well worth the money if you need to be able to use your phone.
Unit is easy to install, especially if you just want to hook it up for trips out of town.
Cons:
The cradle and the wiring (antenna) are not exactly heavy industrial grade, so if you are going to beat the daylights out of your interior (oil field, ranching, construction), keep that in mind.
A bit pricey and that price varies widely from site to site.
Don't expect the interior repeater unit to magically detect and rebroadcast signals from any significant distance away from the cradle, because you need to be within a few feet of it. I'm sure there are variables such as location of the interior antenna/cradle that make a difference.
Summary:
This unit works really well and if you work, live or drive in an area with pathetic or marginal cell coverage, and need greatly improved coverage, these things are wonderful. I love mine.
I hope this helps somebody!

Increase your cell phone's signal by up to 25 times with the Wilson Cell Phone Signal Booster Kit. Designed for use in your car, truck, RV, or boat, the booster kit significantly improves your cell phone's performance and signal strength. You'll experience fewer dropped calls, faster data rates, and clearer reception. In fact, the booster is powerful enough to allow multiple phones and data devices to be used simultaneously. Also, this kit includes a convenient phone cradle with a built-in antenna.
Installation of the booster, antenna, and car cradle is a breeze. View larger.Enjoy Premium Reception and Fewer Dropped CallsUsing state-of-the-art technology, the Wilson Booster Kit strengthens your cell phone reception and guarantees premium coverage, even when you're traveling in remote areas with a weak signal.
The booster kit comes with everything you need for installation, including a high-gain 12-inch magnet-mount antenna that attaches easily to the roof of your vehicle. The antenna is connected via cable to the amplifier, which is housed in a compact metal case that fits neatly under your passenger seat.
It's All About PowerThe primary cause of dropped calls is low signal output power from the cell phone to the cell tower, which limits the phone's ability to communicate with the tower. A typical cell phone provides merely one-fifth of a watt of output power. To address this problem, the amplifier provides up to an impressive three watts of output power. In addition to the power increase from the amplifier, the included magnet mount antenna will increase the phone's output power another 10 times. Used in combination, your phone will get up to 25 times more power over using the phone alone.
Innovative Cell Phone Cradle with Built-In AntennaAlso included with the kit is a convenient car cradle that lets you dock your cell phone while driving, allowing you to keep both hands on the wheel. The cradle provides a wireless connection between your cell phone and the amplifier, even when your cell phone is removed from the cradle.
For added convenience, the cradle comes with an adhesive dash mount bracket as well as an adjustable swivel bracket, so you can find the installation that works best for you and your car.
Once installed, the booster kit will amplify the wireless signals of multiple cell phones and data cards within the vehicle, allowing passengers to enjoy excellent reception and data connection simultaneously. My mobile carrier is Verizon (can you hear me now) who boasts of the largest network. Of course I live in a pretty dead zone for just about every carrier. I sometimes had 1 bar but not enough to make a call or send a text without being plastered against one particular window. The network extender from Verizon didn't work with my internet provider so I had to find another solution. At first we had the antenna in the attic with the wire run to the downstairs (temporary because it was freezing outside and unable to mount outside) but the unit would go into protect mode (orange) meaning oscillation. The first warm day we installed the antenna outside on the garage roof and ran the wire through the basement to the first floor. We actually now can make a call from any room in the house. Before I even purchased this I called Wilson who explained that oscillation will be worst with the omni directional antenna which you would need at least 50 feet of distance in a straight line away from the antenna and the inside antenna. With the Yagi you only have to be away 20 feet between both antennas. I am glad I got the Yagi because in a 3 story house (counting the basement) with the Yagi in the attic and 8 foot ceilings I had to have the indoor antenna on the floor in the basement in order to prevent oscillation. My advice would be to get the Yagi antenna if you don't want the hassle of repositioning distance between the two antennas and remember that the 50 or 20 feet of distance between is a straight line measurement. You can run 50 feet of wire up and over, down and under, but it's not how much wire you use it's a straight line distance between the two which is just easier with a Yagi. If I had bought the omni directional antenna I know it would have been much harder to get 50 feet of distance. As far as Wilson goes, the rep was very helpful with all my questions and after I received the product I didn't have to call back just re-routing. Wilson is top of the line as far as anything antenna is involved.

My regret is that I didn't buy it sooner! I purchased this from Radio Shack in Logan, WV while working just outside Man, WV. I was there for about 7 months and was GREATLY agravated with the cell phone service (I should say lack of service) in most of the area and undependable in most of the rest of the area. Once I broke down and spent the money it was well worth it. It is too bad I waited 4 months to do it. I went back and purchased another power supply and antenna to install in my camping trailer as I live in it when working out of town which is most of the time. Contact home to my wife and children is obviously very important and necessary to keep my sanity and my relationships with them. I have not found any area yet that I don't have service. I have recently purchased an air card for my laptop and it helps with the speed and dependability of that service too. I highly recommend this item to anyone who wants or needs cell phone service.

My job requires me to travel throughout most of the southest and there are ALOT of areas with little to no cellular coverage. Since my vehicle is my office I also need my Cellular Aircard to work for internet purposes and to connect to our company database. I carry a company phone(Verizon Blackberry) and my personal phone(at&t iPhone) incase one doesn't work hopefully the other one will. My wife finally got tired of our conversations getting dropped and me complaining so much that she ordered a Cellular Amplifier from another online vendor(not a Wilson). I didn't even know these things existed until she suprised me one weekend when I came home. Man was I excited.....so I took everything out of the package and began reading the instructions to learn about how this unit operated and how it should be installed. I have somewhat of a 12volt background and am quite skilled in car audio installation and knew installation was going to be a breeze.....but for those that are not aware most of these units actually just plug into the car 12v outlet for power and you just plug in the outside antenna and the inside antenna to the amp and your done...but with my background I wanted it to be more permanant. Before I decided to mount everything I decided to use it the next week and make sure everything worked properly. BOY WAS I GLAD I DID!! This unit made it look like it I had full bars all over but as my week went on I noticed the dropped calls didn't go away and actually they seemed to be worse. Once home that next weekend I started my research about the different amplifiers on the market and I visited many of the different companies websites. That's when I came across the Wilson 801201. Having remembered Wilson from the CB days as the best CB Antenna Manufacturer out there I figured their quality would trickle down to their other products. I luckily was able to return the other brand amp and once that was handled I called Wilson Electronics and talked to their tech support to get their recomendations. I explained to them what problems I was having and they recommended what I needed. So once we got the Wilson kit in and I opened the box I could see the quality difference just in the product itself. Again I decided to use it for the next week before I fully installed everything. I was pleasantly suprised during my 1st day that my drop call problem was almost non-existant. Not only did both my phones show more bars my aircard actually worked in places its never worked before and at faster speeds. I didn't realize it would help my download speeds but it does. I might have had 1 or 2 dropped calls over the last 2 months but thats nothing compared to 10 a day like before. This amp has greatly exceeded my expectations and I tell everyone about it. I'm proof that there are others out there but when it comes to the best nothing competes with a Wilson amp.

I have been suffering through satellite internet for years and decided I would try to boost my cell signal into my home. I tried a few other options, until I decided to pony up the dough and get this one. Let me tell you, this was the BEST purchase I have ever made, and I am completely able to get signal to discontinue my $200 a month satellite service to the $48 data card plan with my cell phone company. The speed is much better and now I can take my data card anywhere I get cell signal. This cell booster is of exceptional quality and is very easy to install. I definitely recommend this to anyone who needs to boost their cell signal.
