If you can't accept that this speaker is nearly 4 feet tall and bigger than your 8 year old, look somewhere else. There is nothing I can tell you about it that will overcome a size prejudice.
This thing is Huge with a capital 'H.' Once you've come to grips with that, you begin to see how amazing these speakers are.
Do not let the name brand fool you. Yes, Cerwin Vega! touts themselves as a company that is all about the loud, and they are. But the dirty little secret is that they sound good too, and too many people dismiss that. Just because you have ridiculously loud potential doesn't mean you can't sound like garbage playing quietly.
Generally, the speakers ARE aesthetically appealing. The metal mesh grill and the very smooth waveguide, along with the trapezoidal footprint and dark carpet do command a very industrial impression, but it its still very clean and minimalist for its size. Its inputs are 1/4", and it has safety fuses(light bulb style) built in. The upper woofer is actually a mid-woofer, and the lower is tuned for the deeper bass.
The sound is nothing short of amazing, even if you don't like it loud. Why would you buy these if you don't like it loud? Range control. Both the dynamic range and the frequency range of this speaker are so broad and controlled in those ranges, even if you play it quiet, you WILL hear every guitar fret on Steely Dan, every breath noise of Bonnie Raitt, and every subsonic impact from the London Symphony Orchestra bass drum. No detail is lost.
People who should look at this speaker are:
live bands- This speaker has an incredibly flat response curve for what it is and won't color your band's amplified sounds. Despite its size, its not unwieldy to handle. Two smaller ladies could still move it easily with the handles on the side, and most guys can probably lift it to a minivan themselves. Set it on a flat dolly and it will fit thru most doors easily. The wide waveguide on the tweeter also spreads the sound out very well.
DJs and gig pros- This speaker is ridiculously efficient and clean. Even if you don't have the greatest amps in the world, or don't even have a sub yet, this thing will take however many watts you DO have and make it sound good. Just make sure your amp is 4ohm stable. If you do have power, this thing will definitely handle whatever you can unleash upon it. (This speaker however has no mounting or flying points of its own, so even though it would do well in trusses from a sound POV, its not equipped for such work.)
Home audio enthusiast- If you're a 2 channel stereo purist, or some college kid who needs it loud, these are your monolith. If you have a 2nd tier home receiver that is 4 ohm stable (such as Onkyo, HK, Denon, etc) you can get incredible imaging and quality from these speakers.
--------update----------
I loaned these out to someone(ugh) who clearly didn't know what they were doing and overdrove a tiny amplifier while using them. The short reason why this is bad is because when an amplifier tries to play at its limits, it sends distorted sound to the speaker which makes it vibrate in a way that the speaker is getting DC current from the amp, and suffers thermal failure.
When I got them back, the tweeter on one side wasnt working. When I took it apart, the tweeter was fine, and the safety fuse light bulb ($5) on the cross-over had blown and protected the tweeter ($45). New bulb, reassemble, and it was back to banging with my 500-watt Crown amplifier with no problems.
